About the Author
Thomas F. O'Meara is the author of over a dozen books in theology, including Theology of Ministry. He has taught during the past thirty-five years at Aquinas Institute of Theology and at the University of Notre Dame, and has served as visiting professor at Weston Jesuit School of Theology, Wartburg Lutheran Seminary, and the Dominican Institute of Theology, Ibadan, Nigeria. He is a past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America.

A Voyage of Discovery Indeed!

One of the biggest treasures in my recent reading has been this memoir A Theologian's Journey by Thomas F. O'Meara, O.P., a former professor of mine at the University of Notre Dame. In many ways, the text is a developed, book-length version of some of the material that I most valued in his class while I was a Master's student studying the theology of grace with him at Notre Dame: reflections on his own educational journey.

He would interject anecdotes in the course of his teaching that took advantage of the very peculiar circumstances that his place in history had afforded him: he came of age as a young Dominican friar from Iowa in the late 1950s, receiving the standard sub-standard theological and philosophical education of his time and place. He was then sent to Germany for a doctorate during the time of the Second Vatican Council, where he received a second, entirely distinct, graduate education - the historically sensitive and honest vision of theology championed by the Council and by the great figures of the theological age like Yves Congar, Henri de Lubac, and Karl Rahner. This gave O'Meara the ability to share with us in the classroom of the 1990s an eyewitness experience of theological education and formation both before and after the Council, which was something that I found particularly useful in getting a grasp of the depth of the changes of those times, in a personalized way that one couldn't obtain simply by reading a history of the Council, or by just reading its documents.

It might sound a bit dull to some, I suppose, in description: a memoir largely composed of recalling a period of education over the course of a decade. But the result is actually both charming and instructive, in much the same way that C.S. Lewis's memoir of his own intellectual and spiritual development up to his belief in Christ, Surprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life, turns education into the greatest of dramas. O'Meara's book is more useful for grasping the essential drama of Catholicism in the 20th century (and much of the intellectual culture of the 20th century in general), particularly as it climaxes in the Second Vatican Council, and I suspect that in future courses I offer on the Council, that I might use the text as a "street level" view of the impact and importance of the Council, which O'Meara describes in an engaging way. I have frequently felt the impulse over the last week to type into my computer some particularly good passage, which I'm sure would have enriched my journal immeasurably, but each time I felt that I was having too much fun reading, and so opted to keep on turning the pages. There are other things that add to my finding such sympathy for the text: O'Meara pays a great deal of attention to how culture influences theology and spirituality, and his descriptions are as much about music, art and architecture as they are about academic theology or philosophy, all of which are also of great interest.

The text was such an unmitigated pleasure that I have to give the highest recommendation for all you readers: five stars, two thumbs up, et cetera and so on.

Edward Idris Cardinal Cassidy holds a doctorate in Canon Law from Lateran University. In 1989, he was appointed as President of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and he became at the same President of the Holy See's Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews. Now retired, he lives in Australia.

A good but incomplete introduction.

Cassidy's book, part of Paulist Press' "Rediscovering Vatican II" series, reviews the content, implementation, and current issues surrounding Unitatis Redingratio (Ecumenism) and Nostra Aetate (Non-Christian Religions). His book is a useful overview of some contemporary issues in Catholicism related to these themes. Cassidy, an Australian cardinal, was for many years president of the ecumenism branch of the Vatican, the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. The PCPCU also manages the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews. I like that Cassidy writes from experience, and that Paulist Press has chosen to have a variety of voices in this series other than just scholars.

Before Vatican II, the Church did its best to keep away from Protestants. "Ecumenism" was a dirty word. When the World Council of Churches was founded, the Catholics stayed away. Interdenomination prayer was anathema.

But at Vatican II, the bishops came out with ground-breaking ideas. The Protestants were no longer heretics but "separated brethren." The Catholic Church was to some extent also guilty for the historical divides. Non-Catholic baptisms are valid. Christ is at work in the Protestant churches as well. And most of all, we must dialogue and collaborate with Protestants, in both spiritual ways (prayer), doctrinal dialogue, and social change.

Yet how is the Church to balance its mission to both work with Protestants and try to unite them with the Church? To what extent does Christ work in their traditions if we believe Christ is most fully in the Catholic tradition? This was worked out more in John Paul II's 1995 encyclical Ut Unum Sunt. John Paul wrote that ecumenism is not an appendix to the Catholic mission to evangelize, but an intrinsic part of it. God wills unity, much more than denomination competition, and we are to work toward unity in ways other than church mergers. He identified some key issues separating Catholics from Protestants: the relation of scripture and tradition, the Eucharist, ordination, Mary, and the magisterium and papal primacy. Does one side have the full truth on these issues (ours), or does the Spirit work through diversity as well as unity? Where do we find that balance?

"Obviously spiritual ecumenism is more than prayer alone. It may be seen as an entire way of life in which one responds to the inner voice and movement of the Holy Spirit. A spiritual person listens to the abiding Spirit and directs his or her life accordingly, becoming selfless and fully dedicted to expressing this faith in action." (92)

Nostra Aetate is one of the shortest documents from Vatican II, but one of the most historically significant. It stemmed from and ushered in a radically different way of relating to other religions. The premise: all people seek truth, and our quests for truth become closer and closer in a world getting smaller and smaller. While we believe Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, we must dialogue with other religious traditions. We must seek to learn about them and appreciate what is good and holy in their traditions, even preserve it. The Council originally planned to have a document about the Jews, but as the bishops discussed the document they extended it to all religions. The text has strong condemnations of anti-Semitism.

And perhaps Nostra Aetate's biggest historical impact has been on the Church and the Jews. John Paul II was famously the first pope to visit the synagogue in Rome, and had a long friendship with its head rabbi. John Paul, who saw the horrors of World War II and the Shoah, visited Auschwitz in 1979 and later moved a Carmelite convent off the Auschwitz grounds after Jews protested it. And in 1998, the Church published "We Remember," expressing deep sorrow for the Church's long heritage of anti-Semitism and the violence and persecution it led to. Still, issues remain to be discussed. How are we to read the Old Testament, as autonomous or as in need of fulfillment from the New? What is the meaning of Shoah? If the Mosaic covenant is still valid and the Jews are also the People of God, what makes us distinctive? Some Catholics still criticize the 2002 joint Jewish-Christian document Covenant and Mission, which effectively states we should cease trying to convert the Jews.

Cassidy briefly covers how relations with other religions have improved as well. And there is ongoing clarification. In 1984, the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue published Dialogue and Mission, describing how dialogue and mutual respect is a part of the kingdom of God. In DM, four types of dialogue are enumerated: dialogues of life, deeds, reflections, and religious experience. Every Christian is called to this mission. John Paul II exemplified this in his Assisi meetings, which controversially had members of different religions praying together for peace. The balance to this is in the 1991 document Dialogue and Proclamation, which reinforces the fact that dialogue must not replace evangelization but must work hand-in-hand with it (confusing). We may learn from others in dialogue, but we may also help them see
"seeds of the Word" in their tradition.

Cassidy's strength here is his downfall. Because he was in charge of the Vatican's dialogue with Protestants, Orthodox, and Jews, he has lots of detail about various meetings and documents. But his coverage of non-Christian religions is pretty weak. For example, in discussions about Buddhism he fails to mention Christians' increased interest in Buddhism, the work of scholars at the Society for Buddhist-Christian studies, or even John Paul II's encyclical on Buddhist meditation, "On Some Aspects of Christian Meditation." I really wish he had given much more "on the ground" detail rather than just what happens at the Vatican.

This book contrasts nicely with Acts of Faith, Eboo Patel's book I read recently. Patel expresses his frustration with religious leaders getting together at nice interfaith banquets and pontificating eloquently on the importance of dialogue without ever bringing parishioners into it. Cassidy's description of all the joint statements and meetings left me wondering: what's the point? I know religious leaders can be role models for the laypeople, but how many on-the-ground parishes actually follow the mission to dialogue? Anti-abortion protests garner lots of support from laypeople, but I haven't seen mass lay movements to visit mosques and temples. Perhaps it is time for someone to fill this vacuum.

A great place to start

The text is presented in two halves; with each half dealing with one of these two documents from the Second Vatican Council. The reader is presented with an outline of some of the background to the formulation of each document and a chronological representation of the work done by the Church of Rome and other religions since the writing of the documents.

The tone and certainly my impression of why people of different faiths should talk to each other is a positive one. Flaws in Interfaith dialogue were certainly identified but such truths were presented with "love". This is an easy to read document, written from a Catholic perspective. In reading the text, I felt encouraged to learn more. So much so that my next purchase was on this issue.

I would recommend this text to Senior Students, parish groups, teachers and individuals who want to study a key area of the Second Vatican Council.

Spiritual Breakthorugh and Healing

I ran across this book while I worked at a library and was instantly drawn to it. This was the first book I'd ever run seen that dealt specifically with the anger, grief, shame and the raging question of "Why Me, God?". So many people who have suffered from sexual abuse/incest feel abandoned by God and turn thier back on him, only to feel a growing spiritual emptyness.

This book deals with healing your relationship with God in a spiritual (not religious) manner and realizing that you CAN have a nuturing relationship with God and begin to fill that emptyness. The question of "Why Me, God?" may never be satisfactorily answered for you but after reading this book you won't feel so alone, shamed and angry with God. You will begin to find comfort once more in the Bible and other spirtiual/religious works. All in all this book is very important step in healing from sexual abuse.

Now that you can enjoy a spiritual relationship you may be ready to move on to deeper more meaningful personal relationship with others in your life. Do make this little known book a part of your healing/triumphing library.

Thomas P. Rausch, SJ, is the T. Marie Chilton Professor of Catholic Theology at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Historical Truth and Experience

Pius XII was the Pope of the Catholic Youth Movement in Germany during the thirties, especially during the Third Reich when it had to go "underground." This fact may explain why the recent publications condemning the Pope are deeply disturbing to the surviving members of "Neues Deutschland," "Katholische Pfadfinder," "Kolping," and other groups of the movement which flourished before Hitler came to power.
By diligently collecting and analysing the newspaper articles, books, and Vatican documents of the time in question Margherita Marchione's "Consensus & Controversy" reestablishes the facts the generation of the Second World War knew by experience: Pius XII did his best to help the victims of the Nazi regime. He saved more of them than all other national leaders, including the Zionist activists of the time, together.
From personal experience I can corroborate two facts the author elaborates:
1.) As a student teacher in the industrial district of Germany in 1955 I rented a room from a Communist family. The husband had been a miner. When the couple found out that I was a Catholic, they started to run down Pius XII as "an enemy of the People" who had supported Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union. When their attempt to "convert" me to their ideology failed, they found an excuse to end the rental agreement and I had to start again looking for living quarters in the bombed-out city of Essen.
2.) The very same year I visited Rome where I stayed as a guest of the Trappist monastery Tre Fontane on the outskirts of the city. In the center of one of the courtyards I noticed an obilisk with many obviously Jewish names carved into the pedestal and all the way to the top of the structure. The monk in charge of the guests explained to me that these people were the Jews who at the request of the Pope had found shelter in the monastary during the war. Most of them had later immigrated to the USA. They had sent the monument as a token of their appreciation . With a twinkle in his eye the monk added: "Would've been nice if they had also sent some money."
This "archeological" piece of evidence confirms the facts related in "Consensus & Controversy." The immediate experience of witnesses will add a basis of validity to the understanding of a period which should never be neglected by later historians. Sister Marchione quotes Golda Meir and many other Jews whose testimonies fulfill this requirement....P> that condemn Pius XII are deeply disturbing"

A Thorough and Meticulous Defense of Pope Pius XII

Sister Margherita, a member of the Filippini Sisters as well as a noted professor at Fairleigh Dickinson, presents a meticulously researched and highly effective rebuttal to the current condemnation of Pope Pius XII's actions (or supposed inactions) with respect to the Holocaust during World War II. In recent years, several books castigated the wartime Pontiff for his failure to protect the lives of European Jews during a time of great atrocity. Some have even gone to the extent of painting a portrait of Pope Pius XII as an ineffectual bureaucrat at best, or a Nazi collaborator at worst. As the author demonstrates through a compendium of letter, newspaper articles, documents and other direct sources, the Vatican in general, and Pope Pius XII in particular, acted within the constraints of an isolated nonmilitary power, to save countless lives through a variety of diplomatic and political channels.

Those who would accuse the pope of Nazi complicity often do so from a fundamental lack of understanding of the Vatican's Power in the first half of the 20th century. In part, this is due to the Catholic Church's outreach in today's era of media saturation as well as the worldwide visibility of John Paul II, the first Pope to recognize the power of global communication. The Vatican in the 1920's - 1940's was one of relative isolation. Its days of any military power were long past and it was surrounded by numerous hostile political powers. Initial attempts to condemn the Nazi war machine directly were met with swift and escalating retaliation by that government. Given the overwhelming military might of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, the Pope was unable to prevail by military might and was forced to save lives within the limitations of its diplomatic and spiritual offices.

This effort was recognized by many of the world's governments, other Christian denominations, and most significantly, by the Jewish people and the State of Israel itself. A good survey

I liked the scope of this book. Each chapter covered a different angle on death and dreams of death. This is all interspersed with dreams of Kramer's students from a college course. These are some of the most intriguing and fresh. This book does give up depth in it's attempts to cover so many angles--religious, philosophical, literary, psychological, shamanic... Also, Kramer basically accepts the notion of death in dreams as transformative and liberating. I, too, find it the most interesting approach, but what he presents in the book doesn't necessary lead to this conclusion.

Some mornings you wake up, roll out of bed, and you just know it's a cold soba kind of day. Sound familiar? But if you don't happen to live or work near Japanese noodle restaurants, you're kind of out of luck. "The Japanese," writes Emi Kazuko, author of Café Japan, one of the Conran Café series, "cannot survive, even for a few days, without a bowl of noodles.... So it's not surprising to come across a Soba-ya (noodle shop) every ten yards or so on any high street in Japan." Yeah, well, what about the rest of us?

Fortunately, Kazuko strips away the mystery from Cold Soba, much as she does from many other café-style dishes you would find in Japan. And where words might fail, the fine color photography used throughout the Café series beautifully illustrates just the point the author wants to convey.

Small cafes and bistros in Japan specialize in one item, yakitori, say, or tempura. In other words, there's no such thing as a "Japanese" restaurant in Japan. Fortunately for the Western cook, Kazuko has pulled all these disparate specialists into one food court where ease and simplicity are the hallmarks of dining.

You will find familiar soups and appetizers such as Miso Soup with Tofu and Snow Peas, Clear Soup with Mussels and Watercress, Fried Giant Prawns, and Soft-Cooked Octopus. Main Dishes include Seared Yuan Salmon, Ginger Pork, Chicken Teriyaki, Udon with Curry Soup and, of course, Soba. There are many dishes here that define the popular palate in Japan, but remain more obscure in the West. Kazuko's great talent is making familiar what might seem exotic. Fast and easy

Easy to prepare recipes with a variety of tastes and techniques. for hard core japanese cooking look at the Tsuji cookbooks instead but these are great starter items to build on. I am an experienced japanese cook, but there were a number of items I had not seen before and so far the items I have tried are good. The japanese ingredients section is especially well done.

Good, but it's part of a series

I didn't realize that this book was part of a series. It's interesting, but the fact that it is part of a series doesn't lend anything to the book. It's like a franchise. The recipes are very good and the writing is unobjectionable. The art direction is a little heavy handed and the photography didn't really impress me. When I learned the book was part of a series those facets struck me as evidence that just extending the series with another title was the main thrust of this effort as opposed to a book dedicated to bento boxes. I'd look for another title first if I were you.

I found this book extremely helpful. It makes the distinction between alcoholism as we know it and functional alcoholism. It makes the point that we believe that someone is not an alcoholic who goes to work every day and does not have a record of DUI's, but falls asleep every night after dinner and three drinks. A functional alcoholic gets by, but is still an alcoholic and needs help. A great book with assistance for family members of a functional alcoholic.

A Special friendship for your child

In her newly released book, Jesus I Feel Close to You (Paulist Press, November 2004, hardcover, 32 pages), author and art teacher Denise Stuckey employs images from a child's everyday life to help emphasize the importance of a close and personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Combining soft and charming illustrations by Phyllis Saroff with the recurring theme "Jesus, I feel close to you..." Stuckey relates the instances that come about in a child's life to classic stories from the New Testament. Time spent helping Daddy at home relates to Jesus' childhood years working with Joseph in the carpenter's shop. A family picnic helps to recall the occasion of the miracle of the loaves and fishes. Climbing a tree reminds the child of the story of the diminutive Zacchaeus, who was so anxious to have a good view of Jesus that he climbed to the top of a nearby sycamore.

As parents, one of the greatest gifts we can bestow upon our children is the knowledge that whatever happens in life, we can always call upon our friendship with Jesus Christ. He is there for us in times of trial, as well as moments of triumph. Jesus I Feel Close to You underscores this perpetual presence and reminds the reader to call upon and nurture this special friendship.
