Choosing Craft: The Artist's ViewpointFrom Brand: The University of North Carolina Press

Choosing Craft explores the history and practice of American craft through the words of influential artists whose lives, work, and ideas have shaped the field. Editors Vicki Halper and Diane Douglas construct an anecdotal narrative that examines the post-World War II development of modern craft, which came of age alongside modernist painting and sculpture and was greatly influenced by them as well as by traditional and industrial practices.

The anthology is organized according to four activities that ground a professional life in craft--inspiration, training, economics, and philosophy. Halper and Douglas mined a wide variety of sources for their material, including artists' published writings, letters, journal entries, exhibition statements, lecture notes, and oral histories. The detailed record they amassed reveals craft's dynamic relationships with painting, sculpture, design, industry, folk and ethnic traditions, hobby craft, and political and social movements. Collectively, these reflections form a social history of craft.

Choosing Craft ultimately offers artists' writings and recollections as vital and vivid data that deserve widespread study as a primary resource for those interested in the American art form.

A rare book in the developing field of craft history, as it frames the issues surrounding craft through artists' eyes. Reading this book is akin to hanging out at a craft workshop and having heart-to-heart talks with the people on the ground creating the movement. . . . Inspires, provokes and reminds us that today's debates have long roots.--Journal of Modern Craft

This collection forces the reader, in a positive fashion, to look more deeply at American craftsmanship and the very talented people who helped define it. . . . I left this book with a much greater understanding of post-war American craft and a deeper appreciation of the various fields of craftwork and the people who have shaped its history.--Journal of Folklore Research

Review
Amusing, controversial, enlightening, and witty, Choosing Craft engaged me so deeply I felt I was having direct conversations with the craftspeople themselves. I applaud the editors' passion for the topic and their thoughtful handling of an array of primary materials. This will become an essential volume in the emerging field of craft history.--Sandra Alfoldy, author of Crafting Identity: The Development of Professional Fine Craft in Canada

These artists' perceptions of themselves and of the craft field as garnered from personal experience make Choosing Craft a valuable book for anyone serious about craft, from art lovers and collectors to students to people interested in design and history.--Howard Risatti, author of A Theory of Craft: Function and Aesthetic Expression

Craft assumes many roles in modern life, but the most important has always been the hardest to grasp: the part that craft plays in the lives of its practitioners. This beautifully researched compendium affords a wealth of insights into those personal narratives. Some texts here are well-known classics; others are exciting new discoveries, taken from archives or interviews. Some radiate political conviction, others quiet humility. All are worth reading. This is an essential book for those who want to understand the American craft movement.--Glenn Adamson, Victoria and Albert Museum, author of Thinking Through Craft

Psychoanalytic Interpretation in Rorschach Testing, by Roy Schafer

This book is written for those who have completed at least their basic clinical training in administering, scoring and interpreting Rorschach test results; preferably the reader should also have clinical testing experience beyond the doctoral level.... More than a solid grounding in Rorschach principles and techniques is required for an adequate reading of this book. The reader should also have a general introduction to psychoanalytic theory and to the data of psychoanalytic observation. Obviously, a book of this sort cannot at the same time attempt to be a text on psychoanalysis; some background of psychoanalytic study is therefore necessarily assumed, even though the reference of psychoanalytic concepts that stand out in this book, such as defense, primary and secondary processes, regression in the service of the ego, and ego identity will be specified along with the indications of relevant psychoanalytic literature.... As a theoretical and clinical statement, this book covers only certain normal and psychiatric subjects, namely those who are (1) white, (2) American or well adapted to American culture, (3) at least average in intelligence and education, (4) from subcultural backgrounds that are not extremely bleak or deviant, (5) in late adolescence or older, and (6) without noteworthy "organic" psychological deficit. The assumptions developed here seem to apply - with appropriate modifications - in other cultural, intellectual, age and neurological contexts, but at present I cannot specify how much they do apply and with which specific modifications and supplementary conceptions. --- excerpts from book's Preface

Truly a basic book
By Walter Maya
If you are interested in assessment, or simply want to sharpen your ear as a psychotherapist, read this book and read it carefully. Schafer's understanding of the dynamics and pitfalls of the relationship in testing, and its differences from the relationship in psychtherapy, should raise your consciousness way high. His deft interpretations of process and sequence are models of hearing patterns and implications. Truly a must, no matter what your level of experience.

excellent reference book
By Ralph Fretz
This book is another example of the importance of reading about the history of the Rorschach, and how the interpretations offered by Dr. Shafer go way beyond the Rorschach.

God's providence what does this mean to us who are following Jesus?
By Jackie St. Hilaire
For the more progressive Christian, Carroll Stuhlmueller is my personal choice. All his meditation books, the special seasons and ordinary times are included in the box set, which is worth the investment. You have all 3 cycles including Sundays and Feast Days. Biblical Meditations For Ordinary Time: Complete Set

For those of us who find Liturgy of the Hours (4-Volume Set)Liturgy of the Hours (4-Volume Set)and Christian Prayer and Shorter Christian Prayer: The Four-Week Psalter of the Liturgy of the Hours Containing Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer and Book of Common Prayer Chapel Edition:Book of Common Prayer Chapel Edition: Red Hardcover, too systematic, Stuhlmueller's meditations follow the Church year and offers the meditations that lead to a better flow for reflection.

For today's reading, Wednesday July 10, 2014 in Cycle A, the 14th week of ordinary time, we have 3 readings to reflect on. Genesis 44:18-21, 23-29; 45:1-5. Hosea 11 ;1, 3-4, 8-9 Matthew 10:7-15.

In reading all three readings and Carroll Stuhlmueller's commentary, the following are my personal reflections.

God's providence, what does this mean to me today. Foresight? Plan? Will? Future?
We are all on the journey and have all had different experiences, whether mental, emotionally or spiritual, we are in a different place.

I look upon God's providence as a combination of all my questions. God foresees the next step in our lives and all of humanity but he will not control the events, he has given us the choice to do good or evil, maybe not the most of evil but the part of us that refuses to grow. Our God wants the very best for us, the reason that He sent us His Son, Jesus. This is a very compassionate God, who knows the outcome of all our choices but also a God who gives us our freedom.

If one accepts that God wants the very best outcome and He will stand by, not in an indifferent manner but with compassion, one realizes that the future can be determined by our actions. That everything is not written in stone. We are co-creators with God, with one another. If we want a better more peaceful world we have to manifest ourselves and become the peace and love that passes all understanding. The Grand Option: Personal Transformation and a New Creation (Gethsemani Studies in Psychological and Religious Anthropology) by Beatrice Bruteau. The Grand Option: Personal Transformation and a New Creation (Gethsemani Studies in Psychological and Religious Anthropology)

It is true that we all want to be trusted and in accepting this trust, we will hopefully make better choices. The choice is always ours. The Choice Is Always Ours: The Classic Anthology on the Spiritual Way by Dorothy Berkley Phillips. The Choice Is Always Ours: The Classic Anthology on the Spiritual Way Who wants a relationship with anyone who is going to control our every move?

A person who acts in an accepting and compassionate manner, will produce much more love, than a person who just finds fault, this is Divine love and in accepting this gift one becomes more responsible.

Good always overcomes evil, but evil will try to grasp us with doubts and fears and bring us to it's level but the grace of God can intervene, if we accept it. This is a relationship between God and us, God will not go where He is not asked to go, even Abraham from today's readings, had to say yes. And where shall one go said Peter to Jesus: "You have the gift of eternal life."

This could get very philosophical and theological but rest assured, we are in good hands.

Music to reflect on today's readings: Neither Silver nor Gold - Liturgical Music Selections From St. Louis Jesuits Neither Silver nor Gold - Liturgical Music Selections From St. Louis Jesuits

I close with a short story from today's commentary.

We are reminded of a story about a tiny remnant of Jews, still at large in WWII Nazi Germany. In their place of hiding, one of them said: "We must pray to God." Another answered: "If we pray, God will find out that there are still a few Jews left in Germany." A third person added, "It is idiotic to pray, for how can God be present in this kind of world!"
The author comments:
This was not a question to be answered but a question of desperation and despair. Yet the rabbi still answered it out of heroic faith and stern common sense: " It may be idiotic to pray, but it is still more idiotic not to pray."

Excellent resource for meditation and preaching.
By R. W. Younkin
I would recommend this book to any Catholic priest or deacon who preaches and needs some background thoughts to
create a good presentation. Father Stuhlmueller does a great job of reflection on each day scriptural readings and each
Sunday's scriptural readings. Also a must for scholars especially undergraduates. It was recommended to me by
Reverend Daniel Kendell, S.J., a fantastic teacher and graduate of the Gregorian seminary in Rome.

The Soldier's Pen: Firsthand Impressions of the Civil War, by Robert E. Bonner

They are all infantrymen; none were commissioned officers. One is a German-speaking artist whose sole record is nineteen stunning watercolors that cover a year's enlistment. Another is a free black from Syracuse, New York. Six are from slave states, one of whom was a Unionist. Drawing from the more than 60,000 documents housed in the privately held Gilder Lehrman Collection, Robert E. Bonner has movingly reconstructed the experiences of sixteen Civil War soldiers, using their own accounts to knit together a ground-level view of the entire conflict. The immediacy of diaries and the intimacy of letters to loved ones accompany the humor of an anonymous cartoonist from Massachusetts, the vivid paintings of Private Henry Berckhoff.

All reproduced for the first time in The Soldier's Pen, the documents and images that Bonner weaves together, providing context and explanation as required, powerfully re-create the day-to-day lives of the soldiers who fought and died for Union and Confederacy. Not since the 2000 publication of Robert Sneden's paintings and papers in Eye of the Storm has a collection of original Civil War documents so evocatively captured the war.

From Booklist
Bonner is the author of two previous books on the Civil War. This riveting and moving compilation is the product of his access to the rich, privately held Gilder Lehman Collection of documents and illustrations. Bonner uses the letters, journal entries, and sketches of 16 Civil War infantrymen, all previously unpublished, to convey the experiences of war as recounted by those who witnessed it at its most elemental level. The soldiers were Unionists and Confederates; some were common workers, some were well educated, and some were from the Southern gentry. There are letters to wives and sweethearts that convey a sense of longing and loneliness. Other letters touch on the monotony of camp life, the comradeship of men under arms, and the novelty of entering different regions of the country. Some of the sketches drip with sarcastic exaggeration. As expected, the most disturbing and poignant images are conveyed by those who describe battles and their aftermath. This work will be an excellent addition to Civil War collections. Jay Freeman

Review

“For anyone interested in viewing America's traumatic Civil War from the perspective of ordinary individuals who found themselves in the Union and Confederate armies, Robert E. Bonner's The Soldier's Pen: Firsthand Impressions of the Civil War will be a very rewarding experience. This expertly edited collection of letters and drawings mailed to the families and friends of sixteen ‘typical' but quite diverse citizen–soldiers conveys a deeply human dimension to America's most dehumanizing war.” ―David Brion Davis, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and author of Inhuman Bondage: The Rise and Fall of Slavery in the New World

“Walt Whitman once said of the Civil War that ‘The real war will never get in the books.' But the real war does get into this book, in the form of letters and diaries written by sixteen enlisted men, Union and Confederate, who tell it like it was.” ―James McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom

“Robert E. Bonner has not only found some of the most riveting, impassioned, humorous, and powerful Civil War letters and journals ever written, he has brilliantly woven them together so that the overall collection reads like a first-rate work of literature. The Soldier's Pen is a masterpiece of scholarship and, without question, one of the most extraordinary anthologies of Civil War correspondence I have ever read.” ―Andrew Carroll, editor of The New York Times bestselling WAR LETTERS

“Thought-provoking.” ―Richard Sauers, Civil War News on Robert Bonner's Colors and Blood

“Bonner's outstanding research and analysis provide hope for those who still feel that first-rate scholarship might inform, contextualize, and transcend contemporary historically charged and emotionally passionate polemics. An outstanding work.” ―Choice on Robert Bonner's Colors and Blood

“This is a fantastic accomplishment.” ―Paul Christopher Anderson, American Nineteenth Century History on Robert Bonner's Colors and Blood

Reading Other People's Mail
By Jim Schmidt
In The Soldier's Pen, Robert E. Bonner - an assistant professor of history at Michigan State University and the author of two previous books on the Civil War - provides Civil War enthusiasts and scholars with extended excerpts from the letters, diaries, and artwork from sixteen Union and Confederate soldiers. The book is an admirable accomplishment in terms of accessibility, relevance, interpretation, and in fulfilling the author's own stated mission.

In his Introduction, Bonner admits that though "historians are loath to admit it, there is an illicit thrill that comes with reading other people's mail." (p. 8). He attributes this "thrill" to the sense of discovery that comes from reading and studying documents that were created by soldiers in private moments and intended for a private audience. Bonner has done readers a tremendous favor by providing access to previously unpublished material held in the famous Gilder Lehrman Collection (and now on deposit at the New York Historical Society), and allowing others the same sense of discovery.

In terms of relevance, Bonner's selections dispel any modern conceit one might have that Civil War soldiers weren't as funny, clever, cynical, disgusted, romantic, prurient, etc., as the modern soldier. Whether commenting on "War Republicans," "Peace Democrats," presidential elections, race relations, incompetent officers, desertion, marriage, suffering of civilians, etc., the reader will have a sense that we have been there before.

In terms of interpretation, Bonner expertly and sensitively weaves the letters, diaries, and artwork into the larger context of the Civil War. In seven chapters, he covers the importance of regular correspondence between soldiers and their families, army life, combat, commitment to (and disaffection with) Union war aims, the fading prospects of the Confederacy, African-American soldiers, and - coming full circle - the importance of surviving letters as family heirlooms and national treasures.

For his part, Bonner states that a central aim of his book was to "restore soldiers' individuality." (p. 4). To be sure, he is not the first scholar to draw on soldier correspondence and diaries to provide insights into the lives of Civil War soldiers and sailors. Still, Bonner makes the salient point that previous studies often turn into a "collective portrait," drawing on snippets from dozens, if not hundreds, of pieces of correspondence to examine how "they" marched, fought, and returned home. By concentrating his study on longer excerpts from fewer soldiers, Bonner is able to avoid the trap and instead maintain the personal in what he deems an impersonal war.

The reproduction of more than a dozen drawings from the sketchpad of an anonymous Massachusetts infantryman - known only as "George" - is worth the price of the book. If not as talented, this soldier's drawings of the vagaries of soldier life are every bit as comical and insightful as Bill Mauldin's famous "Willie and Joe" cartoons from World War II. "George's" lampooning of the northern press's enthusiastic (and exaggerated) coverage of the taking of a Confederate outhouse deserves to be a classic.

The book does have two major flaws; the most glaring of these is the lack of an index. Want to know what soldiers thought of McClellan? of Lincoln? of food? of homeguards? of African-American soldiers? You'll have to read the book and hunt for it yourself. The other major flaw is the lack of a substantial bibliography apart from detailed catalog records from the Gilder Lehrman Collection. In this matter, it fails as a launching point for further research by an interested reader; others may not be satisfied at Bonner's assertions (as statements of fact) on points for which there may be disagreement among scholars.

It is the contents that make this book what it is, though; the letters, diary entries, and artwork from these soldiers deserve a wide audience - especially for those interested in "bottom up" history - and in this, Bonner has succeeded.

The Soldiers Pen
By A. Bryant Betsill
This book delivers only a topical overview of the day to day life of a Civil War soldier. As the title suggest, Robert Bonner uses actual letters from the soldier in the field that were sent home and kept. There were slim chances of a letter from home being kept by a soldier in the field, under camp conditions. The author writes a brief introduction about the men he chose to feature in the book. There are thousands of such archived letters and hundreds more have just recently been made available to researchers. This book is more of a "Cliff Notes" introduction into the social side of the Civil War soldier.

Too much of the author.
By Coach T
This book includes many letters and accounts but Union and Rebel soldiers, but also has too much commentary by the author. In many respects, the stories speak for themselves and the authors tries to guide us through in what I thought was a bit too heavy handed approach. I felt I was being "lead" to his conclusions.

Hallelujah Lads and Lasses: Remaking the Salvation Army in America, 1880-1930, by Lillian Taiz

So strongly associated is the Salvation Army with its modern mission of service that its colorful history as a religious movement is often overlooked. In telling the story of the organization in America, Lillian Taiz traces its evolution from a working-class, evangelical religion to a movement that emphasized service as the path to salvation.

When the Salvation Army crossed the Atlantic from Britain in 1879, it immediately began to adapt its religious culture to its new American setting. The group found its constituency among young, working-class men and women who were attracted to its intensely experiential religious culture, which combined a frontier-camp-meeting style with working-class forms of popular culture modeled on the saloon and theater. In the hands of these new recruits, the Salvation Army developed a remarkably democratic internal culture. By the turn of the century, though, as the Army increasingly attempted to attract souls by addressing the physical needs of the masses, the group began to turn away from boisterous religious expression toward a more "refined" religious culture and a more centrally controlled bureaucratic structure.

Placing her focus on the membership of the Salvation Army and its transformation as an organization within the broader context of literature on class, labor, and women's history, Taiz sheds new light on the character of American working-class culture and religion in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Insurgent Cuba: Race, Nation, and Revolution, 1868-1898, by Ada Ferrer

In the late nineteenth century, in an age of ascendant racism and imperial expansion, there emerged in Cuba a movement that unified black, mulatto, and white men in an attack on Europe's oldest empire, with the goal of creating a nation explicitly defined as antiracist. This book tells the story of the thirty-year unfolding and undoing of that movement. Ada Ferrer examines the participation of black and mulatto Cubans in nationalist insurgency from 1868, when a slaveholder began the revolution by freeing his slaves, until the intervention of racially segregated American forces in 1898. In so doing, she uncovers the struggles over the boundaries of citizenship and nationality that their participation brought to the fore, and she shows that even as black participation helped sustain the movement ideologically and militarily, it simultaneously prompted accusations of race war and fed the forces of counterinsurgency. Carefully examining the tensions between racism and antiracism contained within Cuban nationalism, Ferrer paints a dynamic portrait of a movement built upon the coexistence of an ideology of racial fraternity and the persistence of presumptions of hierarchy.

Review
An exhaustively researched, brilliant, and absorbing reinterpretation of Cuba's nineteenth-century revolution, emphasizing its anticolonial and antiracist rhetoric and dimensions. Ferrer's original and nuanced analysis captures the complex nature of the struggle and its inner tensions and contradictions. An outstanding contribution to Cuban historiography.--Colin A. Palmer, Graduate School and University Center, City University of New York

An admirable book; Ada Ferrer has attentively examined the dynamics between the racial groups involved in Cuba's struggle towards independence. . . . [She] meticulously documents these struggles and provocatively reinterprets them. Most impressive is her ability to keep her analytical eye close to the Cuban ground.--Times Literary Supplement

Ferrer's book is a significant contribution to the historiography on race and race relations in Cuba, its revolutionary movements, and on the construction of Cuban nationhood. . . . An insightful study on Cuba's subaltern population and the role it played in constructing the Republic of Cuba. It should be read in courses on race relations and independence movements in Latin America and the Caribbean.--American Historical Review

This book is the best overview in English of the role of race in the Cuban independence movement. . . . This book makes clear both the great accomplishments in day-to-day race relations that were achieved and the deep structures of race that still stood when the Yankees intervened.--Journal of American History

Ada Ferrer's study of the Cuban revolution is one of the most original and stimulating treatments of race relations and racial ideologies in the Americas that I have seen in a decade. The book should have an appeal to both Latin American specialists and to students of race and racism in the Americas and elsewhere. This is a powerful story, powerfully told.--Thomas C. Holt, University of Chicago

[An] important analysis of race in early Cuban nationalism.--Choice

[This] study combines in-depth archival research in Cuba with a judicious use of more recent writing on race, nationalism, and postcolonial theory. Ferrer is particularly successful at showing how notions of freedom, citizenship, race, labor, and cubanidad were all contested social constructs that were forged in the context of Cuba's two wars for independence.--Latin American Research Review

This is a painful story that has never been told before, because race has never been placed so squarely at the center of the Cuban revolution, where it belongs. Ferrer cuts against the grain of a romantic, nationalist Cuban historiography that tends to see only what was inclusive and progressive in the wars for liberation. Anyone who wants to understand modern Cuba should read Ferrer's account of the Cuban insurgency.--Journal of Military History

From the Inside Flap
Examines the tensions between racism and anti-racism in Cuba s struggle to become a nation between 1868 and 1898.

Pathbreaking work on race and revolution
By A Customer
Insurgent Cuba tracks the transformation of racial and gendered narratives of the revolution from the abolition of slavery to the war of independence. In this fascinating and pathbreaking book, Professor Ferrer reveals that, with the emergence of late 19th century Cuban nationalism, narratives of race, slavery, and the place of black people in the revolution shift dramatically. Through the voices of leaders like Jose Marti, black insurgents were constructed as color-blind patriots committed to the liberation of Cuba, not slaves and ex-slaves attempting to overthrow the regime of slavery and demand equal rights. Black people were transformed in these three decades from a problem and threat to the republic to the symbols of Cuban nationalism's commitment to multiracial democracy. Anti-racism became a weapon in the hands of Cuban revolutionaries in their battle against Spain, which changed the status of black insurgents, put them on a pedestal in a way, and made their stories fundamental to the narrative of the new republic--one that is colorblind and willing to incorporate everyone as long as they are patriots. For blacks and mulattoes, this discourse gave them a platform to complain about racism in the ranks of the army, in everyday life, everywhere. On the other hand, the ellision of racism in the discourse of Cuban nationalism and the celebration of multiracial republicanism was often used against critics of racism in Cuba. "To speak of race, then," Ferrer writes, "was to challenge the depth of racial and national unity." Any attempts to mobilize on the basis of racial solidarity was then dismissed as divisive and unpatriotic. By reconstructing these different narratives in the context of specific revolts and campaigns, Ferrer offers us a stunning alternative narrative of the struggle for Cuban Independence. Insurgent Cuba is perhaps the best book available on race and Cuba.

The Allure of Racelessness
By tatertot
As a professor of Latin American and Caribbean history at New York University, Ada Ferrer's research focuses upon the social dimensions of themes such as race, slavery, nationalism, and revolution. In her first novel Insurgent Cuba, Ferrer tells the story of the thirty-year multiracial movement for Cuban independence. She examines the participation of black and mulatto Cubans in the nationalist insurgency from 1868-1898. Through this investigation Ferrer notes the aspirations and limitations of citizenship and nationality for African Cubans. In her analysis Ferrer demonstrates that the enlistment of former slaves fueled the revolution, but consequently permitted the Spanish and later the Americans to expose racial issues, which then undermined the goals of Cuba libre.

Ferrer's social account is organized chronologically and broken up into three sections. The first piece of the narrative is dedicated to the Ten Year's (1868-1879) war and the Guerra Chiquita (1879-1880). Ferrer describes the combination of racial and nationalist factors that led to the rapid enlistment of slaves and Spain's success in characterizing the rebellion as a race war. The second segment of Insurgent Cuba analyzes the peace between the Guerra Chiquita and the final rebellion. During this period (1880-1895) insurgents disassociated the issue of race from the revolution and promoted the image of a raceless Cuba. The third section discusses the final war for independence. The rhetoric of racial egalitarianism played a strong role in the ultimate insurgency, (1895-1898) but the peace that followed failed to end racial inequality in Cuba.

Ferrer's investigation of racial tensions within Cuba's nineteenth century revolution is surprisingly in-depth despite the general lack of Afro-Cuban literature from this time period. Many slaves, with the exception of Ricardo Batrell, were either illiterate or did not document their memoirs of the wars. Despite the absence of personal accounts, Ferrer paints a detailed portrait of the movement using a variety of other sources. Excerpts from newspapers, poems, rebel legislation, memoirs, essays, speeches, and patriotic intellectuals capture the social development and demise of the Cuban revolution. In a sense the lack of personal Afro-Cuban information may actually enhance Ferrer's argument. Social historians often rely too heavily upon "human documents, which render the topic of discussion too subjective. In the face of too few personal Afro-Cuban documents, Ferrer employs sophisticated quantitative and demographic methods. The use of concrete data has the effect of solidifying her social argument.

True to Ferrer's roots as a social historian, Insurgent Cuba is presented as a piece of literature accessible to a common audience. Ferrer informs the reader of all information necessary to comprehend the progressions of the Cuban revolution without loosing sight of the racial tensions or becoming bogged down in personal details. The appearances of dates mark only the major events such as the outbreak of the Guerra Chiquita, which allows the reader to maintain a simple and coherent internal timeline. Maps and photos appear at least twice within each of the three sections and act as a short break from the text. The pictures function as a means to attach faces to the prominent historical figures and the charts typically organize a bundle of statistical data. Pictures can provide a wealth of historical information, however Ferrer seemed to use the illustrations more as visual aids than primary sources.

A weakness of Ferrer's book is the apparent ambiguity surrounding words such as racelessness and antiracist. In the introduction Ferrer contends that, "to frame the revolution in this light- as an...antiracist project-forces us to reconsider certain questions" (Ferrer 5). There is a degree of vagueness surrounding the term antiracist, which could imply either the rhetoric of racelessness or the literal practice of it. The evidence that Ferrer puts forth in the body of the narrative suggests that the antiracism of the Cuban revolution was both symbolic and literal; however in certain contexts it is difficult to understand which definition is being stressed. Perhaps Ferrer employs racelessness ambiguously in order to suggest the dual meaning of the word. Nevertheless moments arise, such as in the introduction, that require further clarification.

Ferrer's racial perspective on the Cuban independence movement represents a significant contribution to the historiography on Cuban nationhood. More significantly for her American audience, Ferrer places the social analysis in the framework of reconstruction in the United States. In doing so, Ferrer contrasts the multiracial Cuban army with the segregated policies of the US. In light of the inequality that remains intact during and following the revolution, Ferrer overstates Cuban racial egalitarianism when drawing comparisons to American reconstruction. Regardless, this juxtaposition engages the popular audience and draws the historical racial debate into a global context.

Freedom's Teacher: The Life of Septima Clark, by Katherine Mellen Charron

In the mid-1950s, Septima Poinsette Clark (1898-1987), a former public school teacher, developed a citizenship training program that enabled thousands of African Americans to register to vote and then to link the power of the ballot to concrete strategies for individual and communal empowerment. In this vibrantly written biography, Katherine Charron demonstrates Clark's crucial role--and the role of many black women teachers--in making education a cornerstone of the twentieth-century freedom struggle. Using Clark's life as a lens, Charron sheds valuable new light on southern black women's activism in national, state, and judicial politics, from the Progressive Era to the civil rights movement and beyond.

Read this book and study it well
By Komozi Woodard
At last the life of Septima Clark, the pioneer in education for liberation, has found the historian worthy of the subject! Katherine Charron is a gifted historian who has rediscovered the rich legacy of Septima Clark and the Citizenship Schools. In her brilliant hands, Septima Clark teaches us once again!

Some might forget that the model for the liberation schools and freedom schools were the grassroots Citizenship Schools on the Sea Islands of South Carolina. If we talk about education for liberation, then we need to understand its roots in the mass movements in American history for self-education, a demand that exploded from below. Like most of the great mass movements in the Black Revolt, the Civil Rights movement was a revolutionary school in that great tradition of grassroots abolitionism, Garveyism, African Blood Brotherhoods, New Negro Radicalism, Black Feminism, Institutes for Positive Education, Uhuru Sasa Schools, Chad Schools, African Free Schools, the Algebra Project and so forth. In that Black Radical Tradition, Black Power and the Black Arts movement built on that foundation of self-emancipation.

Furthermore, Professor Charron teaches us that Septima Clark's work for self-emancipation interwove women's emancipation into the fabric of black liberation. Septima Clark was one of the master teachers of the 20th century!

Read this book: order copies for your study group; set up workshops in your library and community centers. Discuss it in church. You have all that you need: time, space and will. Organize yourselves: arm yourselves with knowledge or harm yourselves with ignorance! Make the right choice.

A biography of a movement
By Ella Jo Sassypants
Freedom's Teacher is beautiful. A vigorously researched, lushly written, biography of African American educator and activist Septima Poinsette Clark, the book serves to enrich our understanding of the black freedom struggle and the classic phase of the civil rights movement.

If Clark had only developed the citizenship schools for SCLC (later transferred to SNCC), she would stand among the giants of the civil rights movement. But, as Katherine Charron makes clear, Clark's involvement in the movement of the 1960s came after a lifetime spent fighting for African American's and women's rights. Indeed, for Clark, the two struggles were inseparable, and both were about as much about personal transformation--becoming empowered--as they were about citizenship--becoming enfranchised.

Like Barbara Ransby's biography of Ella Baker, Freedom's Teacher spurs readers to reconsider the periodization, the actors, and the aims of the civil rights movement. More importantly, and more inspiringly, the focus on black women's activism through education reminds us that even in the most crushing days of Jim Crow, African American women continued to build the tools that would secure their freedom.

Aelred of Rievaulx: Pursuing Perfect Happiness (The Newman Press), by John R Sommerfeldt

For the medieval Cistercian abbot Aelred of Rievaulx, human beings are capable of happiness because human nature is good-but the self-defeating choices of humans have led to their misery. A loving God leads humans to happiness by nudging their free wills toward choosing the good and then, if they respond positively, giving them the power to realize that good. The power, or virtue, which perfects the human intellect is humility, which is not meekness but self-knowledge, gained through introspection and meditation on and through nature and Scripture. The will is perfected through love, without which no human act is good. Love for oneself, for others, and for God are complementary, not competing acts of the will. A special way of loving is firiendship, on which Aelred's teaching is perhaps the most complete and most sophisticated in the history of Christian thought. Perfection is, for Aelred, attainable in this life, since he sees perfection as a process, not a static condition. That condition will be attained in the total fulfillment of the afterlife.
