Defining the future
By K. McClure
Deacon Ditewig has written a gem - whether you are simply studying about the Diaconate, discerning your own call, active in formation, or already ordained, this is a must read. I am active in a formation program (entering 5th year) and it solidified my sense of what I am pursuing better than anything else has done. It contains a wonderful history of deacons and what this order has meant to the Catholic Church throughout its history but it has so much more. It paints the big picture of what a Deacon really is (or should be) and that being a Deacon is about being a servant to all. Thank you Deacon Ditewig - your book was extremely helpful!

Solid introduction to the history and significance of the Catholic diaconate
By M. L. Asselin
“The Emerging Diaconate” is written by one of the foremost experts on the diaconate, William T. Ditewig. Besides being knowledgeable about his subject, Ditewig is a clear and convincing writer. This particular book provides the best introduction to the diaconate currently available.
The book covers the historical roots of the diaconate, its history through the first millennium, and then its restoration in the permanent diaconate by Vatican II. Most Catholics are familiar with transitional deacons, who are seminarians ordained to be deacons for a brief period of time prior to their ordination to the priesthood.
More and more Catholics, however, are becoming acquainted with the vocation of deacon through permanent deacons being installed in their parishes. Just as priests are the sacramentalization of the priesthood of all believers, the deacon—the word mean “servant”—is the sacramentalization of the call we are all asked to answer to serve one another. Ditewig suggests that by making the diaconate a stepping stone to the priesthood, the Church inadvertently short-changed the charism of deacons.
Ditewig expands on the theology of the diaconate. In particular, he focuses on the “ken'sis,” or emptying of oneself, of the diaconate: “a totally self-sacrificial strength for service” (p. 132). Ditewig cites the “Directory for the Ministry and Life of Permanent Deacons,” which stresses that the “primary and most fundamental relationship [of the deacon] must be with Christ, who assumed the condition of a slave for love of the Father and mankind” (p. 132). The purpose of this ken'sis is “the'sis”: “the restoration of intimate communion with God” (p. 148). The purpose of emptying oneself, in other words, is to find God and become “partakers of his divinity,” to quote St. Thomas Aquinas (p. 149). This humbling of oneself is what Jesus asks of all of us in being servants to one another, and the deacon, as the sacramentalization of that servanthood, is called to realize that in a special, public way.
Ditewig acknowledges that the theology of the diaconate is incomplete, and he serves as a cogent advocate of the need for further study, reflection, and explication. He concludes his book with several other topics for further consideration, including: better promotion of the unique character of the diaconal vocation, distinguishing the diaconate from the priesthood and not let a shrinking priesthood become the reason for an increase in deacons, and better understanding the unique role of the deacon in the context of Church renewal.
A relatively brief (220 pp.) survey of the diaconate, its history and functions, as well as a short treatment of contemporary issues surrounding the vocation of the diaconate, “The Emerging Diaconate” is the book for the man discerning a possible vocation to the diaconate as well as for anyone interested in who deacons are and their role in the Church.
