Delicious and innovative

First, the recipes are wonderful and quite doable. The author uses fresh, seasonal ingredients in lots of different ways--always with great results. This is my first year participating in a CSA, and this book has helped me learn what to do with produce I was previously unfamiliar with. The real beauty of this book, however, lies in the anecdotes and descriptions included with virtually every recipe. This is a cookbook that reads more like a humorous Southern novel!

This is a great cookbook! The recipes are wonderful, and have a "what else works" section at the end in case that particular vegetable is not available at your farmer's market when you go shopping. The recipes are organized alphabetically by the fruit or vegetable, so you can work with what's in season. It's a perfect book for anyone who wants to go local and incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their meals. The stories are personal and funny and make the book that much better. I have given this book as a gift to many friends and would highly recommend it. You won't be sorry you bought it.

For those interested in contemplative Christianity

Richard Rolle was a new figure to me. I enjoy reading early Christian contemplative writers and was first attracted to his work THE FIRE OF LOVE which I found fascinating. Rolle is an excellent writer and even in translation from older English to modern English, much of the magic remains. He also writes very personally and this is most appealing. So I went ahead and got this work I am now reviewing and found some parts nearly as good as the first one I read - FIRE OF LOVE, most definitely works such as the FORM OF LIVING. I think you might be able to find that one online or at least a detailed synopsis. Then I would read THE FIRE OF LOVE next before getting this book. Those are just my opinions at this point. Rolle is certainly a writer who deserves more exposure to modern readers. Be careful to make sure you are getting a modern English version as the older English is very difficult to read unless you are a scholar.

Great Homilies

I once had the hardbound edition of this book - in fact I had a collection of 5 of this author's writings - but I donated them to a church library. I recently found myself wanting to reread some of the homilies and had to buy the paperback. If you have any interest is reading a priest delivery great sermons at weddings, graduations, etc this is a facinating read. I have a friend back in CT who said he attended a class by this author years ago and he was a facinating speaker. This book verifies that. Enjoy.

The Devil and Doctor Dwight reexamines this episode by focusing on The Triumph of Infidelity (1788), the verse satire that launched Dwight's campaign and, Colin Wells argues, the key to recovering the deeper meaning of the threat of infidelity in the early years of the American Republic. The book also features the first modern, annotated edition of this important but long-overlooked poem.

Modeled after Alexander Pope's satiric masterpiece, the Dunciad, Dwight's poem took aim at a number of his contemporaries, but its principal target was Congregationalist Charles Chauncy, author of a controversial treatise asserting "the salvation of all men." To Dwight's mind, a belief in universal salvation issued from the same naive faith in innate human virtue and inevitable progress that governed all forms of Enlightenment thought, political as well as religious. Indeed, in subsequent works he traced with increasing dismay a shift in the idea of universal salvation from a theological doctrine to a political belief and symbol of American national identity. In this light, Dwight's campaign against infidelity must also be seen as an early and prescient critique of the ideological underpinnings of Jeffersonian democracy.

Best Practices from Effective Churches

Wilkes has provided excellent insights into what practices are actually fruitful not in his own words, but in the words of pastors and lay leaders around the United States. It is not written as a primer on church leadership, but rather invites leaders from exemplary churches to share what they have learned about how God is working in and through their churches. It is a diverse bunch of churches and not a one-size fits all prescription. Emminently practical and based on observations of pastors and lay leaders in the trenches bringing the gospel to bear in this very challenging time.

Lots of great ideas for every ministry!

Are you looking for ways to inspire more parishoners to come to church? Ways to get them deeper into their faith? Ways to bring unchurched people in contact with Jesus? This book has a lot of answers.

The format is a series of brief (10-15 page) essays written by parish leaders of "best practice" Catholic and Protestant churches that cover a wide variety of ministry topics: evangelizing, preaching, fundraising, etc. Each topic contains two or more essays, usually with a different focus.

Since there are so many types of churches and viewpoints represented, you will probably think some ideas sound great and other ideas don't really fit. But it seems as though all these churches struggle with the same basic questions regardless of denomination. It's definitely possible you could pick out just one or two ideas here that could be implemented in your church and really change lives.

This book focuses on 911 the entire book......... despite in the description how it says it covers a wide range of subject matter..... it talks about other nightmare causes in brevity but then refrences right back to 911 in the very next paragraph....... poorly written book....... will not be helpful unless 911 is your issue them maybe.....

Better suited as a searchable database than a book. Big list of examples but fails to present a case.

The book provides a long list of examples and references, so it could be relevant as a starting point for an in-depth research project due to the number of references. For this purpose, the book format is a limitation.

As a book that struggles to make a case, if falls down. It fails to present evidence that the examples are representative and not simply cherry picked. Sure there are lots of examples presented that seem to make a case, but there is no analysis of why the examples can be extended for general purpose or data showing that the examples are more than an aggregate of exceptional cases (first mover, niche market, etc.).

As an example, several cases highlight the marketing or PR benefit that certain companies get for a 'green' solution. While it may be easy to find a examples of such a case, this can't necessarily be generalized to the entire industry. Marketing/PR benefit diminishes as other companies adopt offer a similar product - it no longer becomes a differentiator. The size of the market that can benefit from green marketing depends on the size of the customer base that demands a green product. Given that greenwashing is so easy, the real ROI for green practices based on marketing will remain even more limited.

I struggled when reading this book because personally, I wanted to believe it. I wanted to see how green business is sustainable and scalable from a business point of view, so I was disappointed with the book's failure to present a case.

Lovins' The Way Out: Kick-starting Capitalism to Save Our Economic Ass is an easy-to-read, exceptionally informative book that reveals how companies can profit by thinking about the climate. People from corporate executives to ordinary citizens will find the book an enlightening, enjoyable read that offers a necessary compilation of information about the energy economy.
