Confront yourself.

Life's funny. A dear friend asked me to stop at a Catholic book store. I figured walking around a bunch of crosses and pictures of Mary would be interesting. And here I am, in effect, passing judgement on the bookstore. It's almost inevitable. We are human. And we judge. This book isn't for those who are comfortable with their current system of beliefs. To confront one's own thinking is a frightening experience. Yet it's so liberating. This book is an easy read, and drives home a good point; seek to understand yourself.
Judging.
We do it on so many levels. We judge ourselves, others, and everything in our life. To step outside our own narrow world, and truly see the world for what it is...it's amazing.

Examine yourself first

I'm Judgmental, You're Judgmental is a book so well written and so full of "jewels" that you can examine yourself without getting defensive. I also found another book by Terry Cooper, "Making Judgments without being Judgmental" an excellent book. Reading those two books and my Bible were valuable in maintaining my marriage and restoring my daughter's marriage.
I bought a copy for my Pastor.

The "Grace and Free Will" of St. Augustine

In this superlative volume of The Classics of Western Spirituality series, "Augustine of Hippo: Selected Writings," St. Augustine's Trinitarian thought is gracefully explained and examined with lucid clarity in Mary T. Clark's Introduction. For example, the differences between Augustinian Theology and Plotinian Neoplatonism: Augustine's belief in the Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit being one and co-equal, and Plotinus believing in The One (God), the Intellectual-Principle (the mind of God, i.e., His image, which is inferior to The One--created by The One), and the Reason-Principle (the soul of God, which is inferior to The One and its cause, the Intellectual-Principle). Augustine adopted from Plotinus "that the spiritual icon is always in immediate contact with its exemplar, the higher intelligible that is its source" (i.e., God). Through Ambrose, Augustine "had found the 'wind' that would waft his bark safely to port in the Blessed Fatherland." So you can see why Augustine is considered Neoplatonic. Many of his beliefs were rooted in Plotinus' Neoplatonism of The One. He believed that God is intuitively known "through the supernatural knowledge possessed by the soul." Our faith and charity is what transformed it into the image of the Trinity. How Augustine's early beliefs formed and evolved into maturity are thoroughly examined, such as his (Augustinian speculation) original triad of the speculative intellect--memory, understanding, and free will. Also elucidated is his belief that Grace is superior to free will, which all modern Christians naturally believe. Before Augustine, the opposite opinion was the prevailing view. And whether or not he was a mystic is discussed in depth. Obviously, he was a mystic is the answer that the majority of reputable scholars concluded. Personally, I think there's no doubt that Augustine was a mystic. He's probably the greatest mystic of the post Apostolic Fathers. The two mystical experiences he describes in "CONFESSIONS" with his friend, Alypius, in the garden (during his last great battle for conversion) and with his mother at the window reveal his mysticism. There's so much more information discussed in the Introduction, that it makes it worth the cost of the entire book. All the selections included in this volume have Introductory Notes, which are extremely helpful in explaining the writings. Here are the contents: "CONFESSIONS: Book Seven; Book Eight; Book Nine; Book Ten"; "THE HAPPY LIFE"; "HOMILIES ON THE PSALMS: Psalm 119: The Ascents of the Christian; Psalm 120: Our Confidence in the Lord; Psalm 121: The Ecstacy of Love; Psalm 122: God Is True Wealth"; "HOMILY ON THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. JOHN: Treatise Seven"; "ON THE TRINITY: Book Eight; Book Fourteen"; "ON SEEING GOD; ON THE PRESENCE OF GOD: Letter 147: Augustine to the Noble Lady, Pauline, greeting; Letter 187: On the Presence of God"; "THE CITY OF GOD: Book Nineteen"; and "THE RULE OF ST. AUGUSTINE". One must read for him/herself St. Augustine's writings in order to truly comprehend the depth and breath of this most graceful and sublime saint's faith. If philosophy is the handmaiden of theology, then Augustine is the master. I highly recommend this outstanding volume, and I hope my review is worthy of such a profound volume as this one certainly is. Blessed art thou, St. Augustine!

A trusted and great teacher of God. This dear St. Augustine, found in Holy Scripture, Beauty, Love, Faithfulness

and eternal Life in the Life giver. He opened the book of his life and described how the One True Triune God came to

him, called him, turned him to walk where Saints walk and therefore St. Augustine gives back to the world, Christ.

He always turns the reader to the Man who gave His life for all who come to know Him. Reading Augustine is a great joy.

A treasure of a book!

Years ago, I purchased this book when I was expecting my daughter. She is almost 6 years old now and "Imagine" is still one of her favorite books (and mine)! She enjoys reading it to me, now. The black and white photography is stunning. The text is simple, yet clearly explains Creation. We also have "Where is God?" and "Spirit!" This book and all of Heidi Bratton's "Walking With God" series are bound to become keepsakes in any home.

I love this series of books! The images are tender and engaging, there is just enough text, and it is not preachy or heavy-handed. A beautiful way to explore faith with your toddler. We have this book in my Sunday school classroom and the children really enjoy it during individual work time.

A Hidden Gem

This book is such a hidden gem. It is quite unpretentious, but fulfills a need that many therapists don't even perceive or know how to address. So many of my clients struggle with lack of attuned early parenting. For many, their parents still have difficulty being supportive. This slender volume provides a way to help clients understand that they have "archetypal parents"--ones that don't fail them the way their human ones do. It can be such a support to feel the love of an archetypal parent--and so necessary. Don't let the Christican symbols used in the book turn you away; all spiritual traditions have these same figures--just with different names and stories. Everyone who enters therapy would be well served to read this book--and get their therapists to read it as well. It is also a great book for conscientious parents to read. It is one of the most cohesive approaches to healing parental wounds available in book form that I have ever seen--one that addresses all three levels of existence: personal, cultural, and archetypal. Plus it is so wise about issues concerning pre- and perinatal psychology as well. Even after having read it several times, I am still informed and inspired by this little book.

Remembering Our Home is a Golden Key

I purchase this book ten copies at a time and give them away.
I recently expressed to one of the authors, William Emerson, that if I could, I would get a megaphone and announce it from the rooftops. Remembering Our Home is a most gently written, beautifully illustrated book that invites the reader to reflect on the earliest and most impressionable moments of being human--in the womb. If at first this strikes you as improbable to do, consider the countless life dreams and aspirations you, or people you know have had, and somehow, someway fulfillment seems to be just out of reach. Remembering Our Home can help build bridges across the gaps to fulfillment by revealing potential blocks, that can form in our first experiences of feeling physically and emotionally. Some examples of causes of these blocks discussed in the book are being born early, or late, toxins like niccotine or drugs, and parents in a stressful environment. Throughout the book there are suggested processes and tools for accessing our earliest potentials. I was born with a disability, and working with this, and the ample additional referals in the book is transforming the quality of my daily life. I am learning from it to benefit myself and all the babies and children in my world.

Terrific timeless topic to develop into seminars and playshops

The four authors have been delivering large public playshops on this for decades mostly "underground" on various church circuits.

The book expands magnificently on the idea of imaging and visualizing a new spiritual father and/or new spiritual mother. The book is a journey to redeem your self from unresolved trauma prior to conception, thru birth, to the weeks after birth. It's also a brief manual of best practices for expecting parents.

Readers familiar with the heavy breathing technique of Rebirthing will see this technique mentioned. Thankfully the emphasis of the authors is NOT on the extremely problematic practice of forceful return to birth trauma thru rapid breathing. Rather it is the "Spiritual Exercises" of Saint Ignatus to relive, in guided visualizations, the life of Jesus of Nazareth, as if you were going thru it as His bodily companion, in great detail.

Then again, the book is not that; rather, 90% of this book is a gentle review of the pre-conception thru birth experience of the soul, pointing out all the ways souls are "tricked" into believing themselves separated form God, in the human birth process. Insights on how we became separated and how to reconnect imaginatively, are not delivered thru dry psychiatric or even Jungian terms but grounded in personal stories by the four authors of their own birth regressions, stories about the results of healing sessions done on their adopted infant son, other client stories, humor and other learnings. One of the authors, William Emerson, is a birth psychology specialist; all the authors lead workshops on this material.

The net effect is a "light" tone enabling readers to go as shallowly or as deeply into unresolved pre-natal and peri-natal experiences as they wish. Exercises, group discussion questions and other helpful things for facilitating growth experiences for others are included.

Trenchant Study of Folklife Festival

This book is fascinating but somewhat over-written. Cantwell started out his research by working on a history of the Festival of American Folklife. When this project was curtailed due to foreseen circumstances, he reworked his research into a review and critique of the festival. The book examines the festival in terms of ways in which participants, performers, producers, audience members, and others in the cast of characters act out their various roles on the mall in Washington DC. Cantwell focuses his study on the idea that the festival provides a way to break stereotypes about other people. He develops his argument to emphasize that stereotyping can involve a range of factors including arbitration of meanings as well as enagements with "the other." Throughout the book, he makes deep inquiries into the salience of stereotyping within American history and culture. The book is best when Cantwell writes interpretive descriptions of what he observed at the festival and what he has researched in archives and libraries. At times, however, the bulky theoretical apparatus and the over-blown jargon detracts from the rich, sensitive insights that the writer makes about American (folk)life. Despite the opaqueness of many sections, this book is an amazing study of festivity in American life.

This is a well written and well documented text, but seems more suitable for psychology than spirituality. I am giving it to a psychotherapist friend who is quite interested in Fauteux's research and findings. All in all, I found the spiritual sections not quite as well developed as I had hoped. Still the book is worth reading for any serious student of the relationship between the false and true self.

Cherokee people have lived in the Great Smoky Mountains for thousands of years. During all this time, they have told stories to each other to explain how things came to be, to pass on lessons about life, and to describe the mountains, animals, plants, and spirits around them. This book collects 26 stories that are great for kids and are still being told by storytellers today. Presented by members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in their own words, the stories appear in free-verse form, like poems on the page, so that if you read them aloud, you can hear the rhythm of the stories as they were originally told. The storytellers include Davy Arch, Robert Bushyhead, Edna Chekelelee, Marie Junaluska, Kathi Littlejohn, and Freeman Owle. For readers age 9 and up.

About the Author
Barbara R. Duncan is education director at the Museum of the Cherokee Indian in Cherokee, North Carolina. She collected and edited the original Living Stories of the Cherokee and co-authored The Cherokee Heritage Trails Guidebook (both from the University of North Carolina Press). The North Carolina Folklife Society has honored Duncan's contribution to the study of North Carolina folklife with the 2008 Brown-Hudson Award.

The living history of a proud nation of very gifted people

"The Origin of the Milky Way" is a collection of 26 Cherokee stories told by Davy Arch, Robert Bushyhead, Edna Chekelelee, Marie Junaluska, Kathi Littlejohn, and Freeman Owl. The stories are written as they were told by the Cherokee storytellers, so they read like poetry. The rhythms of English can sound like the Cherokee language if the stories are read aloud as they are written. The stories are divided into seven groups or chapters: Living with People, Living with Animals, Living with Plants and the Earth, Living with Spirits, Living with Monsters, Living with the Cherokee Language, and Living with the Past and Future. Some of the stories are intended to teach ways of getting along with others, while others such as The Trail of Tears teach of historical events experienced by the Cherokees.

A fascinating chapter on the Cherokee language tells of the syllabary invented by Sequoyah, a gifted Cherokee. The story of the Origin of the Milky Way is written first in English, then in phonetic Cherokee, and finally in Sequoyah's syllabary. The importance of continuing to teach the living Cherokee language as a unique cultural heritage is emphasized. The Cherokee language is related to the language spoken by the Iroquois of upper New York State and the Great Lakes region. To further aid the reader's enjoyment of the stories and learning about the Cherokee people, the book has a glossary, map of Cherokee lands, timeline of Cherokee history, and suggested further reading resources.

The charming black and white illustrations also enhance the story chapters. Also available in a hardcover format, "The Origin of the Milky Way" can be enjoyed as a delightful collection of tales to instruct children, but it is really much more than that. It contains a living history of a proud nation of very gifted people.
