By examining the "confessional" elements of these writings, Buckton brings "secrecy" into focus as a central and productive component of autobiographical discourse. He challenges the conventional view of secrecy as the suppression of information, instead using the term to suggest an oscillation between authorial self-disclosure and silence or reserve--a strategy for arousing the reader's interest and establishing a relation based on shared knowledge while deferring or displacing the revelation of potentially incriminating and scandalous desires. Though their
disclosures of same-sex desire jeopardized the cultural privilege granted these writers by Victorian codes of authorship and masculinity, their use of secrecy, Buckton shows, allowed them to protect themselves from Victorian stigma and to challenge prevailing constructions of sexual identity.

Those Victorians. For decades the prevailing presumption was that mid- to late-19th-century British sexuality was completely repressed, or at least hidden by shame-filled secrecy. Then, in the 1960s, historians began understanding the complexity and often shocking blatancy of Victorian eroticism. In Secret Selves: Confession and Same-Sex Desire in Victorian Autobiography, Oliver S. Buckton argues that literary "secrecy"--the very act of holding back information in a novel or memoir--was a primary and provocative indicator of Victorian homosexuality. Examining confessional writings by Edward Carpenter (whom many consider the moral and political forefather of the gay movement), John Henry Cardinal Newman, John Addington Symonds, and Oscar Wilde, Buckton discovers that all of them say a great deal more than they seem to by quite consciously saying much less.

Victorian Era...as it is...not as perceived...

Bravo to Oliver Buckton for unmasking the stuffy conventions of Victorian life and revealing the true erotic nature of this seemingly reserved society. Dr. Buckton, with a bit of wit and wry humor offers up to the the reader the unmasking of such writers as Forster and Carpenter, yet it is his nonjudgemental style and flair for literary analysis that makes this book a better read then most others on this subject. He makes no apology for his subject matter, and if anything, this is his confessional too as he purges the findings of his research allowing conventional readers to peep into an erotic world without fear of shame. I feel any English major would benefit greatly from this book and certainly would shake up their professors with these stunning concepts....A must for the Grad student!

A thorough review

I have to start by being honest and saying that my interest in this book was focused on the 1/3rd of the book about Perfectae Caritatis, the Vatican II document on the Renewal of Religious Life. That section was excellent. Some might find it technical but it really offers an in depth review of all that went on behind the scenes to produce this ground breaking document. It was a real eye opener for me. I read it when it was first published in 2008 and it's on my short list to reread now that we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Vatican II.

Despite the broader approach they called for, both their advocates and their detractors had difficulty seeing them as anything but "black intellectuals" speaking on "black issues". A social and intellectual history of the trio, of Howard University, and of black Washington, Confronting the Veil investigates the effects of racialized thinking on Harris, Frazier, Bunche, and others who wanted to think "beyond race--who envisioned a workers' movement that would eliminate racial divisiveness and who used social science to demonstrate the ways in which race is constructed by social phenomena. A modern survey of Markan study

Daniel J. Harrington's book, What Are They Saying about Mark? is a continuation of Frank J. Matera's 1987 work of the same name in which those studying Mark's gospel can learn the "ultimate realities...in ancient and present day religious and political struggles." (Harrington, 2) While both take a broad survey of scholarly works commenting on the Gospel According to Mark, Harrington chooses to deal with those studies and materials written after Matera's work was published in 1985 so as to add to the discussions on topics related to studying and better understanding Mark in the realm of general, vice exegetical, study. (Harrington, 4) Mark's Gospel is rich with debatable topics and interpretation. Each of these scholarly discussions brings a unique flavor and interpretation to this seemingly short gospel and ultimately, makes the faith in Jesus Christ richer and more attainable to all who choose to follow.

While topics of setting, Christology, disciples, composition, and narrative are all addressed in this book, it was done in a different format and under chapter headings than the original Matera work. Harrington's first chapter is designed to look backward, toward the survey conducted by Matera whose work focused on Markan commentary from the 1960s. Additionally, this opening chapter explores the change in Markan scholarship since Matera's original work, while providing commentary on his own. The second chapter is a brief look at modern literary criticism. Next, Harrington conducts a theological overview of several topics such as Christology, discipleship and faith, just to name a few. The fourth chapter takes a historical approach to the Gospel by examining the text through the lenses of those texts available at the time of Mark's writing as well as the setting as it relates to his biological narrative of Jesus. The final chapter captures some of the more engaging topics, such as feminism, political, and pastoral, that have come along in the last few decades. Harrington also provides a four page bibliography for further academic study.

Deep, Detailed, Accessible

Before reviewing this text, I want to make a few notes about it. First, this is not a direct translation of Origen's work. Much of his writing--that is, in the original Greek--is lost, among them the works in this volume. As a result, this text is based on later Latin translations. To its credit, the book's introduction contains a nice summary of the limitations of relying on an intermediate translation to capture Origen's original meaning.

This book contains two works. First is Origen's Commentary on the Song of Songs, translated from Rufinus' Latin version. The second is Two Homilies on the Song of Songs, from St. Jerome's Latin version.

Origen opens the Commentary with a relatively concise prologue that describes the meaning and themes he finds in the Song of Songs, which is followed by detailed (verse-by-verse) explanation of the mystical meaning of the text. Unfortunately, large portions of the Commentary are lost (i.e., not preserved by Rufinus or others), so the existing text of the Commentary covers "only" through 2:15. The Homilies repeat in general terms many of the themes in the Commentary, though with far less detail. According to the book's introduction, the Commentary is "the first great work of Christian mysticism." I must admit that I do not know enough to confirm or deny the claim that this is the first such work, but I can say that the Commentary certainly deserves to be described as "great."

I love the Commentary, thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and have already re-read several sections. I find it spiritually moving and though provoking. Although it is a meticulously detailed and profound theological exposition of the soul and its relationship to God, it is not a difficult book to read. Origen's interpretation of the Song of Songs is expounded with clarity and precision, and Origen draws the reader along to his conclusions in a step-by-step manner. Despite the deep and profound nature of the subject, the meaning (to me) was consistently crystal clear. I finished the book wanting to read more by Origen, and almost certainly will (I expect to purchase his Exhortation to Martyrdom in the near future).

In addition, this work (and Origen's writings generally) are significant to doctrinal development. Origen exerted influence on many subsequent Christian thinkers, including St. Gregory of Nyssa and St. Jerome. In fact, in a short "cover letter" attached to his translation of the Homilies (included in this book), St. Jerome says, "while Origen surpassed all writers in his other books, in his Song of Songs he surpassed himself." This is a long way of saying that the Commentary is a historically significant work, and perhaps worth reading for those who are interested in the development of doctrine. In fact, this particular volume is quite good from an academic point of view, as it is thoroughly annotated and includes a decent index.

In summary, this is a great book. It is moving and lucid, and historically significant as well. I would add that the print and binding are both of very good quality; this is a great publication all around and I recommend it whole-heartedly.

A wise guide to the holiness that undergirds everyday living

The author, Tilden Edwards, is an Episcopal priest, who went on a search during the seventies for spiritual guidance in eastern traditions, and was then able to bring back his own spiritual growth to join with the best of the west. Edwards acknowledges that we are driven by anxiety, and that no one size fits all self help solution exists, because we come from different traditions, and have differing gifts and personality types.
What Edwards offers are practical round-the-clock suggestions to help each of us live in prayerfulness and simplicity. Edwards divides the routines of daily living into specific windows of opportunity, through which the Holy One can shine through to us, and out from inside of us. Some of these windows are: waking, praying, eating, playing. Edwards shows how it is a matter of God's grace that a holy light shines from each of us, though we may be expert at blocking it, by our careless inattention, our scattered busy-ness, or our anger.
The book has usefulness not only for individuals, but also for book study groups, worshipping congregations and the whole gamut of meditation groups. The modern church phenomenon of small groups is thoroughly discussed by Edwards, who was also ahead of his time in approaching churchgoing as an intergenerational experience.
This book is both psychologically whole and deeply Scriptural. Edwards walks us through the practice of spiritual attentiveness gently and respectfully. He has punctuated the text with plenty of open space, useful subheadings, and lively brush drawn illustrations. I enjoyed the down to earth anecdotes of the Edwards's family life with young children.
I first read this book the year it was published, when I was the mother of a newborn, feeling alternately awestruck and shell shocked, and blessed to be participating in a Taize meditation group. This year, two decades later, I have been trying to learn how to survive the heart aches of mothering a young adult, how to juggle career and school, and how to spend more significant time in the presence of the Holy One. I have had a wise spiritual guide: Tilden Edwards' book LIVING SIMPLY THROUGH THE DAY; SPIRITUAL SURVIVAL IN A COMPLEX AGE. This book is as lively as it was two decades ago. I pray that it will continue to help us "to focus on the union of God in us with God out of us: on the overlap between us; on the Spirit that is whole..." [ page 78].

Seamless integration of Christian and Buddhist practice

A number of years ago, I had the good fortune to take several classes at the Shalem Institute, which was founded by Tilden Edwards. This book can help anyone who can't make it to Washington DC to participate in a Shalem program to nevertheless get a taste of the spiritual wisdom that is offered there. Edwards, an Episcopal priest, found his life turned upside down after participating in an extended retreat at the Nyingma Institute in California. This east-meets-west story does not end with Edwards becoming a Buddhist; rather, he uses the wisdom he gleaned from Tibetan spirituality to deepen his own practice as a western Christian. Over the years, I've come to see that many Christians find eastern or other non-Christian spiritualities to be threatening -- but Edwards shows in this masterfully simple book how the wisdom of the east can enhance, rather than confuse, a Christian's spiritual life. Through meditation, silence, open awareness, and embracing simplicity as a virtue, we create the space in our lives for deep wisdom and joy to transform us. This book is an excellent guide to adopting such disciplines of the inner life.

Potpourri of various religious practices: No real depth.

The author tried to make something useful and meaningful from a mixture of various religious practices he learned. Apparently he failed, however. This book turned out to be a potpourri of several religious practices and ideas without providing real depth. I am afraid this book would make my days more complex rather than simple. I want to ask the author one question; is Jusus not enough for us and you as a priest to go to God?
