About the Author
Robert J. Wicks strives to open people who are used to giving to the miracle of receiving. He accomplishes this goal by marrying sound psychology and basic spiritual truths that set the stage for profound personal transformation. A popular presenter at workshops and conventions, Wicks is especially appealing to people in the helping professions physicians, teachers, psychologists, and ministers assisting them to integrate the psychological and the spiritual so they can extend their emotional flames to others without burning out in the process. He has worked around the globe from the psychological debriefing of relief workers evacuated to the United States from Rwanda to conducting workshops in Cambodia for members of the international community assigned to help the Khmer people rebuild their nation. Additionally, he delivered presentations at Walter Reed Army Hospital to health care professionals involved in caring for Iraqi war veterans with amputations and severe head injuries. Wicks, a Queens, New York, native, received a master s degree in clinical psychology in 1973 from St. John s University and a doctorate in psychology from Philadelphia s Hahnemann Medical College in 1977. In 1996, Pope John Paul II awarded Wicks a papal medal for his service to the Catholic Church. Wicks has written more than forty books including Streams of Contentment, Riding the Dragon, and Crossing the Desert. He is on faculty at Loyola College, Baltimore. Wicks and his wife Michaele have a grown daughter. They live in suburban Baltimore, Maryland.

Inspiring, Introspective and Common Sense

This is by far one of the most inspiring books I've ever read. It helped to refocus and redirect my energies inwardly. Many times we become so consumed with looking for complex messages, mysteries or solutions, it becomes very easy to miss the simplicity and practicality of wisdom and spirituality! This book enabled me to remember where my authentic power is rooted. It is in my spirituality! It also reminds me that the most passionate parts of life are gentle and simple!!

I Kept Waiting for Substance...

I can't believe it...I kept waiting for something of substance to reflect on and continually came up short. For example, near the end of the book in Chapter 12: Taking Yourself Lightly the author states, "I think that pouting for a brief period of time is fine, as long as we don't do it too long." Wow! Now there's a statement to reflect on for hours!! In general I found the book superficial and a bit patronizing to anyone who is attempting to take their spiritual life seriously.

Gavin James Campbell demonstrates how these anxieties were played out in Atlanta's popular musical entertainment. Examining the period from 1890 to 1925, Campbell focuses on three popular musical institutions: the New York Metropolitan Opera (which visited Atlanta each year), the Colored Music Festival, and the Georgia Old-Time Fiddlers' Convention. White and black audiences charged these events with deep significance, Campbell argues, turning an evening's entertainment into a struggle between rival claimants for the New South's soul. Opera, spirituals, and fiddling became popular not just because they were entertaining, but also because audiences found them flexible enough to accommodate a variety of competing responses to the challenges of making a New South. Campbell shows how attempts to inscribe music with a single, public, fixed meaning were connected to much larger struggles over the distribution of social, political, cultural, and economic power. Attitudes about music extended beyond the concert hall to simultaneously enrich and impoverish both the region and the nation that these New Southerners struggled to create.

As Meaningful as Ever

I've read the play previously, seen the movie, and have read extensively about the clash between the two men. The play is as strong as ever a statement about religion/enlightenment/choice. Our book club will discuss it and act out some of it as part of our season of books that have been most influential to date.

Inherit the Wind may also be viewed as a warning.

INHERIT THE WIND does an excellent job of presenting some accounting of the actual Scopes trial, of the intellectual and poilitcal competition between two great men, of rural life in the 1920's Bible Belt, and of some semblance of the science versus religion debate. However, a more philosophical view could be that the story depicts the dangers of fanaticism in any area of society. The story makes the reader realize that an open mind is the true corridor to progression. Likewise, a mind so narrow and closed that it does not allow for change in either natural law or human law, is a mind that is self-destructive and a potential threat to all others influenced by it. Thus, the Reverend and Mr. Brady lost their followings and indeed, themselves, because of their religious fanaticism.

Christopher Krentz is assistant professor of English and American Sign Language and is director of the ASL Program at the University of Virginia. He is editor of A Mighty Change: An Anthology of Deaf American Writing, 1816-1864.

Seeing the Hearing Line

This is an original and provocative book. Addressing W. E. B. DuBois's concept of "the color line" in the 20th century, Krentz argues that 19th century American literature grappled with a "hearing line," i.e. a contested boundary between hearingness (the author's coinage) and deafness. He examines how this hearing line appears in work by deaf authors and also in the canonical authors of the century. The readings of Melville, Twain, Cooper, and others open new perspectives on their works that should be of interest to anyone concerned with the construction of American identity. The deaf authors included are contextualized in their literary and social locations as they articulate a deaf "I" or "we."

Throughout the work, Krentz engages current literary theory on gender, race, class, and colonialism. Deaf American culture intersects with these theories, but also presents challenges to them. The similarities and differences between deaf experience(s) and those of other oppressed groups deserve serious thought by anyone interested in the dynamics of self-definition for oppressed groups. Krentz emphasizes the positive sense of deaf identity and community that emerged in the 19th century, as authors responded to the complexities of American identity at that time.

Useful Study

This is an informative (and nicely written) look at 19th century American literature in terms of the ways it understands the ideas of deafness and hearing. The theoretical matrix of DuBois's color line may be less necessary and less useful here than the social historicist theory Krentz is developing as a base for reading both deaf and non-deaf authors in their negotiations of the imaginative--and perhaps the real--space of deafness. May be engaging to anyone appreciating American literature and/or interested in concepts of deafness, as well as to academics in these and related fields.

Very good for its price

This book is exactly what the title says. A good historical-theological introduction to the prophets and prophetic activity in the ancient Near-Eastern world. It deals with all of the prophets in the Old Testament. Starting with the prophets in the Pentateuch (Abraham, Moses, etc), up to the 'classic' prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, etc.) The writer is a catholic priest, but his presentation is fair enough to be used by any other denomination (I am not Roman Catholic, but enjoyed the book).

Best introduction for adult learners and those studying on their own!

If you've always found the Prophets a bit daunting, but want to understand them, this is the book for you. It's one of those books where you can tell the author loves the subject and really wants to help you learn.
You'll get the background you need to read and understand the texts.
Great things about this book:
-Material: background on the times and life of the prophet; the important themes and messages of the book; how the prophet used traditions (like the Exodus) and how later traditions incorporated their work
-Starts with the prophets of the Torah
-Well organized, great headings: I always knew where I was & how it fit into the big picture
-Gives the background of prophecy in the Ancient Near East and relates it to what you're reading: you don't have to have read the Mari letters or know Akkadian (or Hebrew)
-Lists, charts, timelines are all great references and make the book visually fun
-Example: for Isaiah author lists the characters as: “The Enemy,” “The Conspirators,” and “The Odd Man Out”
-An extra virtual 5 stars for the callout boxes: two columns have the text and what each part of the text does (e.g. messenger formula). The relevant parts of the quote is bolded, which is super helpful. I don’t know if it’s because the material is so dense, but reading “set over them a district governor” doesn’t immediately make me realize, oh no, he reduced the kingdom to a province! Bummer!
-Helps you choose readings from the prophets instead of recommending the whole book AND includes the quotes from the readings in the text (great for further reference)
-Talks about the book in the tradition of the Christian & Jewish liturgy—fascinating and helpful to remember who’s who. Which prophet's work did Dies Irae come from?
-Ideal for self-study

This one, like the others in this series, is a great way to introduce your little ones to God's love and the gift of His son, Jesus. This one focuses on ways to give God praise... has a great rhyme and really shows many different ways we can praise God. Again... darling photos.
