Landscapes of the New West: Gender and Geography in Contemporary Women's Writing (Cultural Studies of the United States), by Krista Comer

In the early 1970s, empowered by the civil rights and women's movements, a new group of women writers began speaking to the American public. Their topic, broadly defined, was the postmodern American West. By the mid-1980s, their combined works made for a bona fide literary groundswell in both critical and commercial terms. However, as Krista Comer notes, despite the attentions of publishers, the media, and millions of readers, literary scholars have rarely addressed this movement or its writers.
Too many critics, Comer argues, still enamored of western images that are both masculine and antimodern, have been slow to reckon with the emergence of a new, far more "feminine," postmodern, multiracial, and urban west. Here, she calls for a redesign of the field of western cultural studies, one that engages issues of gender and race and is more self-conscious about space itself--especially that cherished symbol of western "authenticity," open landscape. Surveying works by Joan Didion, Wanda Coleman, Maxine Hong Kingston, Leslie Marmon Silko, Barbara Kingsolver, Pam Houston, Louise Erdrich, Sandra Cisneros, and Mary Clearman Blew, Comer shows how these and other contemporary women writers have mapped new geographical imaginations upon the cultural and social spaces of today's American West.

Review
This landmark book is a deft and gracefully written survey of the 'new female regionalism' in U.S. literary and cultural studies. Comer splendidly integrates urban geography, ethnic studies, feminist studies, and literary detail in a cross-cultural framework that neither fragments nor totalizes.--Jose David Saldivar, University of California, Berkeley (or, author of Border Matters: Remapping American Cultural Studies)

Krista Comer's Landscapes of the New West offers inventive new readings of contemporary western women writers like Didion, Silko, Kingsolver, Anzaldua, and Kingston, readings grounded in interdisciplinary work on feminist geography, new western history, ecocriticism, environmental history, postcolonial studies, and postmodernism. Always politically engaged and risk-taking, Comer creates a new multi-ethnic literary landscape in the American West.--Melody Graulich, editor, Western American Literature

Comer has established the richness of an evolving Western literature that quarrels with and extends not only the legends bracketing the Marlboro Man and Clint Eastwood but also the regionalism of the earlier women writers.--Women's Review of Books

In a breathtakingly provocative and original study that forever de-mythologizes the masculinist west of Owen Wister and Wallace Stegner, Krista Comer makes a persuasive case that there is a new literary female regionalism and that the heart of this new regionalist sensibility is decidedly feminist and postmodern. By surveying writers like Joan Didion, Leslie Silko, Barbara Kingsolver, Pam Houston, Sandra Cisneros, Louis Erdrich, Gloria Anzaldua, Judith Freeman and others, Comer uncovers how these new female regionalists imaginatively relate to, construct, and narratively inhabit their many different western landscapes.--Annette Kolodny, University of Arizona

Extensively explores the element of landscape--the single most unifying factor in all writing of the West--and specifically how landscape is presented by the female literary tradition.--Library Journal

Truly indispensable to scholars working with the literature of the American West, American studies, environmental theory, and feminist criticism.--Western American Literature

Landscapes of the New West marks a major advance in connecting feminist thinking with Western regional thinking. Exploring the works of writers from Joan Didion to Sandra Cisneros, from Wanda Coleman to Mary Clearman Blew, Krista Comer thinks and analyzes with an extraordinary intensity and vigor. Under her attention, familiar assumptions about the West and its meanings are reconfigured into the sparkling elements of a new intellectual kaleidoscope. Especially in its reckoning with race and with dreams of the wilderness, this book makes you think, and think with freshness.--Patricia Nelson Limerick, University of Colorado at Boulder

From the Inside Flap
Challenges the field of western cultural studies to recognize the new cultural and social spaces successfully mapped by such feminist writers as Didion, Silko, Kingsolver, Erdrich and others.

A great challenge to traditional views of women & the West
By A Customer
Beautifully written and wonderfully detailed, this book looks at literature by women who, in different ways, make "the West" their home. But Comer overturns defintions of the West as simply the old frontier and "the big sky." The West is black women in LA and Asian women in San Fransisco and Native Indian women writing about their modern lives. The book has very interesting interpretations of contempory women's literature, but the best part is the way it makes you re-think what you thought you knew about the "West." Put away your cowboy images, this book shows the West as a diverse region that has produced some of the best fiction writers in the nation.

Witnesses to the Word is based on the description of the Gospel writers in Dei verbum 19, which in turn alludes to Luke s description of his sources in the prologue to his Gospel (Luke 1:1-4). In the New Testament the word can refer to the person of Jesus ( In the beginning was the Word, John 1:1) and to the good news about Jesus proclaimed by the early Christians and now preserved in the New Testament. Moreover, the modern scholars whose works are reported in this book have been in their own ways witnesses to the word of Scripture in that they have devoted their lives to the serious study of the New Testament.
The subtitle, New Testament Studies since Vatican II, indicates that the author is seeking to describe what can be learned from the academic or scholarly reading of the Bible, and to suggest some open questions that might be addressed in the future. Harrington's goal is to show that scholarly study of the New Testament is both necessary and fruitful, and that a simplistic reading of Scripture does not do justice to its richness and will only impoverish the text and the reader.
This book is truly a roadmap to New Testament study over the past fifty years. Throughout the author maintains a positive and constructive tone, long having been convinced that there need not exist an ugly ditch between the academic study of the Bible and the believer. Rather, in keeping with the Catholic Church in its recent official statements about the Bible and its interpretation, he believes that serious study of the Bible should both inform and enrich the life of the believer.
In each of six chapters, the author describes some real scholarly progress since Vatican II, and about which ordinary people interested in religion and theology ought to know. He then offers ten thesis statements that explain what these developments are and why they are important, finishing with a general annotated bibliography.

The Peninsula Campaign and the Necessity of Emancipation: African Americans and the Fight for Freedom (Civil War America), by Glenn David

In the Peninsula Campaign of spring 1862, Union general George B. McClellan failed in his plan to capture the Confederate capital and bring a quick end to the conflict. But the campaign saw something new in the war--the participation of African Americans in ways that were critical to the Union offensive. Ultimately, that participation influenced Lincoln's decision to issue the Emancipation Proclamation at the end of that year. Glenn David Brasher's unique narrative history delves into African American involvement in this pivotal military event, demonstrating that blacks contributed essential manpower and provided intelligence that shaped the campaign's military tactics and strategy and that their activities helped to convince many Northerners that emancipation was a military necessity.

Drawing on the voices of Northern soldiers, civilians, politicians, and abolitionists as well as Southern soldiers, slaveholders, and the enslaved, Brasher focuses on the slaves themselves, whose actions showed that they understood from the outset that the war was about their freedom. As Brasher convincingly shows, the Peninsula Campaign was more important in affecting the decision for emancipation than the Battle of Antietam.

Review
[An] assiduously researched and highly illuminating work.--Journal of Southern History

Want proof that history isn't dead? Look no further than Glenn David Brasher's revelatory account of what happened in Virginia 150 years ago this summer. . . . Brasher shows that freedom wasn't something that happened to enslaved Virginians. They seized it the first moment they could. . . . Brasher's seminal book makes it hauntingly real.--Fredericksburg News

[Brasher] successfully challenges both myths [about slave participation in the Civil War], and in the process, places Virginia's slave population at the center of one of the most important military campaigns of 1862. . . . [This book] reminds us just how much the Union and Confederacy shared in their valuation of blacks during the war.--The Atlantic

In a highly stimulating way this seminal work ties social, military, and political developments together into a powerful thesis about the making of the Federal decision for emancipation.--Journal of American History

A fascinating, impressively researched, and lucidly written addition to the literature on emancipation.--American Historical Review

[A] satisfying read, breaking new ground and laying the groundwork for future studies of Black/White relations on the front lines of the Civil War. This excellent book is well written, extensively researched, and convincingly argued. The University of North Carolina Press has a winner here.--TOCWOC:A Civil War Blog

Recommended. All levels/libraries.--Choice

Brasher presents an insightful description of this most fascinating, yet oddly overlooked chapter of American history. . . . A valuable addition to Civil War literature and this reviewer gives it high marks for research and candor. The book makes an excellent addition to any Civil War library.--West Virginia History

It is fortunate for his audience that Brasher is a careful and resourceful researcher and a lucid writer. . . . Although this work focuses on the necessity of emancipation, if other historians are wise they will let it serve as a model of how to unify political, military, and social history for future studies of all the campaigns of the Civil War.--Civil War History

This intriguing study adds new twists to the well-known tale of the Peninsula Campaign.--The Historian

A highly praiseworthy work that succeeds in combining traditional military history and social history to the benefit of both.--Register of the Kentucky Historical Society

By placing black people at the center of the Peninsula campaign, Brasher shows the value of blending military historiography with emancipation histiography.--H-CivWar

Quite thought provoking in many areas. . . . I highly recommend this book to anyone with interest in the politics of the abolitionist movement during the Civil War and how they were morphed by the military actions of the eastern armies.--Gettysburg Chronicle

No student of the Civil War who wants to give an informed answer when next confronted with the 'black Confederate' question can afford to miss this fine book.--Civil War Monitor blog

This book, which is destined to become a mainstay in the historiography of emancipation, offers a constant reminder that history does not occur in a vacuum.--Civil War News

In the debate over emancipation, Brasher persuasively emphasizes the importance of such reports of blacks' participation in the war.--The North Carolina Historical Review

This book does what history does at its best.--Civil War Monitor

Rarely does an author merge so seamlessly in one study a military history--a particular campaign, social history--slavery and history from the bottom up, and political history--the origins of the Emancipation Proclamation.--Civil War Book Review

This book effectively opens new doors of scholarly exploration.--Virginia Magazine

Review
This impressive book belongs at the forefront of the conversation about how slavery fell apart on the ground in the midst of war. We come to realize the drama featured not a single actor or group of actors, but a cast of thousands whose actions and motivations we have not always understood very well." --Chandra M. Manning, Georgetown University

In vivid, deeply researched detail, Glenn David Brasher presents a crucial but almost unchronicled chapter of Civil War history. Anyone seeking to understand how the war to save the Union became a struggle for African American freedom should read this important book.--Adam Goodheart, author of 1861: The Civil War Awakening

Thought Provoking Analysis of 1862
By Matthew Bartlett
There has been a recent interest into the summer and early fall of 1862 regarding the military and emancipation. Glenn David Brasher gives new insight into the involvement of African Americans and the Peninsula Campaign which aids Abraham Lincoln and his decision to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. While readers would assume that this work centers around the fighting of the Peninsula Campaign, most of the work analyzes the work which the African Americans provided for the cause and the great monuments to their work. Here in this work, Glenn David Brasher truly gives us something different and something to think about.

Glenn David Brasher is an instructor of history at the University of Alabama. He is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and has received his Ph.D. from the same university. For eight years he was a seasonal field guide at the Richmond National Battlefield and had his specialty in the Peninsula Campaign. He has also taught at the Virginia Commonwealth University and contributes regularly to the Civil War Monitor and the New York Times “Disunion.” In 2008, he was a finalist for the Southern Historical Associations C. Vann Woodward Award and is the 2013 recipient of the Wiley-Silver Award from the Center for Civil War Research at the University of Mississippi.

Upon the first look at this book, readers may feel as though it is an analysis on the Peninsula Campaign and while there are some things about the campaign in the work, the focus is quite different. The book is separated through the months ranging from April of 1861 all the way to July of 1862. Throughout the text, Brasher proves that there were efforts of the African American population which were overshadowed by the “Hero Making” of Union officers. The press often took notice more of the hero making than the works of the African Americans in the campaign. It is also in this work where there are quite a few pictures which show the relations between the Union soldier and the freed slave. In the realm of military intelligence, there were quite a few officers in the Union army which trusted the words of freed or escaped slaves over that of their own intelligence gatherers. It was at this point in the war when the Pinkerton agency began to falter with their intelligence and the words of the African Americans were more reliable than them. In my opinion, this was more important to the war effort than the constructing which they were doing to aid the army. While the participation of the African Americans were important, he also analyzes the morale of the Union soldiers during the Peninsula Campaign. In his chapter on July of 1862, he remarks the many times which not only the soldier morale was down, but the officer morale was low as well. This was an army which was supposed to bring Richmond to its knees and in the eyes of many of the officers was a decent plan. But as he states with resounding evidence, the morale was bad. Another interesting part in this study is the implementation of the abolitionists during the campaign and their reactions to the failures which had come about. Some, such as Henry Ward Beecher, were angry that emancipation had not yet come and blamed the campaigns failure on the nation’s refusal to liberate slaves.

This book is quite thought provoking in many areas in a good way. Due to the participation of African Americans during the Peninsula Campaign, there was a push for emancipation from abolition leaders, many of whom were in the political circle. In usual campaign analyses, there is just a military outlook, but here, we get all ends of the spectrum: military, social, political and abolition. I highly recommend this book to anyone with interest in the politics of the abolitionist movement during the Civil War and how they were morphed by the military actions of the eastern armies. Highly Recommended.

A New View
By Kevin Windham
Growing up in rural west-central Alabama I was indoctrinated with "Lost Cause" ideology, a fallacy that hamstrung my understanding of the Civil War. However, through graduate school, I came to a deeper appreciation of the conflict, the players involved, and the complexity of the age. I have been able to look back on my education, on what I thought I knew to be "the truth," and to question. My friends have been invaluable in growth.

One of the many areas I had never considered was the role of African-Americans, notably slaves, during the Civil War. Too often, we talk about slavery and its role in setting the climate which led to secession, then touch the topic again with Antietam and the Emancipation Proclamation, generally acknowledge the service of the USCT's, and then end the "Peculiar Institution" in Reconstruction. However, a question remains: What specific military roles did slaves play during the war even before emancipation and the raising of black toops? Glenn David Brasher gives us an answer.

In this new and historiographically divergent monograph, Brasher approaches the roles of African Americans in their "fight for freedom." Focusing on the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, he brings the actions and agency of slaves to the forefront, a positionality much warranted. Slaves fought on both sides (to what degree, when, where, and why is still debatable, , and Brasher handles the question of so-called "Black Confederates" with objectivity) and labored for both sides in digging trenches and constructing forts. However, slaves also put an enormous amount of pressure on soldiers, officers, the northern public, and politicians in Washington. Brasher explains how slaves understood that the war was "waged to perpetuate the dismal night of their servitude," and when the opportunity arrived, they fled the farms and plantations as well as their impressment into Confederate service. They wanted freedom. Running to Fort Monroe or--in general--the Union lines, they began to provide labor and information that shaped both strategy and tactics as the Army of the Potomac moved on Richmond. These men and women became a "useful appendage" to the army and forced the question of "who are our friends?" on to northerners in general. Slaves became the trench diggers, the guides, and informants--passing along information on troop numbers and movements--but they also became much more: slavery was become an increasing concern for the A.O.P. (and the North as a whole). Slaves faced grievous dangers as they fled and as they served the Union. Their actions caused U.S. Secretary of the Navy Gideon Wells to proclaim, in one instance, he had known "none more meritorious." The influx of slaves into Union lines caused not only the army to questions slavery, but also required Congress to heavily debate the Second Confiscation Act and the military necessity of emancipation. The author is keen to point out that newspapers also carried the debates, and thus the northern public was made aware of the military arguments for emancipation. The military contributions of slaves on the peninsula spurred the debates, a fact Brasher drives home with success. Brasher is able to show that "By mid-July 1862, Abraham Lincoln's life-long moral objections to slavery, indications that Northerners increasingly supported sterner measures against the South, and the growing acceptance of the military necessity of emancipation all came together to doom the South's peculiar institution." In challenging the idea that Antietam is the battle that should be most associated with emancipation, Brasher's work is simply a must read for all interested in the Civil War.

The Campaign that Sparked Emancipation?
By A. A. Nofi
A summary of the review on StrategyPage.Com:

'Prof. Brasher (Alabama) argues, rather convincingly, that although Antietam is usually associated with the Emancipation Proclamation, it is the Peninsular Campaign to which we should look to more fully understand the process by which Lincoln came to issue his charter of freedom. Using official documents, newspapers, letters, and diaries, Brasher demonstrates how African-Americans – enslaved, fugitive, or free – contributed to military and political events, and how their experiences in the war led led many soldiers, journalists, and military and political leaders to see emancipation as necessary to the furtherance of the Union war effort. As he makes his case, Brasher also rejects the Neo-Confederate “thesis” that masses of blacks willingly serving the South as combatants, albeit a handful did, and also the trendy thesis that the slaves were themselves the sole actors in their emancipation, although of course by their actions they did play a critical role in helping bring that about. Brasher has provided a very readable and important contribution to Civil War studies.'

Fun frolic through the seasons...
By M. Santos
If you are a gardener, you'll love this book. Since I am not, I enjoyed it but probably not to the extent of my gardening friends. The pictures are wonderful and spritely and the story moves along at a rather brisk pace. It goes through all four seasons, showing how the garden (and the chores) change throughout the year. I think this is a great book to begin a discussion of seasonal shifting, as well as a jumping off point for starting a garden with kids. A fun read... and the dogs in the book ROCK!

In this volume of the Classics of Western Spirituality™ are translations of the early writings of Jean Gerson (1363-1429), chancellor of the University of Paris from 1395, most widely known for his efforts to bring about church unity during the Western Schism which began in 1378.

These works, which were written between 1398 and 1408, a decade when Gerson established himself as an academic, humanist, and Christian teacher and reformer, include: The Mountain of Contemplation; Sermon on the Feast of Saint Bernard; Early Letters; Speculative Mystical Theology; Practical Mystical Theology; On Distinguishing True from False Revelations; The Art of Hearing Confessions; and Treatise against the 'Roman de la Rose'.

These writings, translations from either Old French or Latin, offer a fresh view of a man who tried to combine understanding and affectivity in a lifelong search for the presence of God. General readers with an interest in history, as well as historians, theologians, and medievalists, will appreciate this major contribution to medieval history and to the intellectual history of Europe in general.

From Library Journal
Medieval historian McGuire (Roskilde Univ., Denmark) here offers the writing of Celestine Priest Jean Gerson (1363-1429). A leading theologian, preacher, and spiritual writer of his time, Gerson served as chancellor of the University of Paris from 1395 and worked for unity of the papacy during its schism (1378-1414). Writing often in French, as well as Latin, he dealt with spiritual and mystical matters in a practical way to guide the ordinary person. Gerson's clear thinking and advice is surprisingly modern, and McGuire's lengthy introduction places his subject's thought in well-documented historical and spiritual settings. McGuire has done a service in making Gerson's texts available in English for an audience beyond the academy. Recommended for most academic and religion collections and public libraries where there is an interest.?Anna M. Donnelly, St. John's Univ. Lib., Jamaica, NY

Revealing the human side of the latter Scholastic period
By D. Larson
As the introduction included in this volume is clear to point out, Gerson is not a seminal and towering influence over subsequent intellectual developments. Gerson is, however, notable for the reader interested in the decline of the medieval scholastic tradition, for with Gerson's writtings one finds a marked departure from the disputations which dominated thirteenth and fourteenth century theology. Rather there is a move towards writting to increasingly wider audiences in increasingly plain language, anticipating modernity's tendency to emphasize more exoteric writing.

But what is most engaging, and what should garner interest in this volume, is Gerson's honest portrayal of his own inner life. Seen by a modern reader to be at times fair and loving, at times harsh and needlessly austere, and always willing to present his own weaknesses, failures, and needs, Gerson reveals the humanity of his own era in a way which allows us to recognize our own.

Winner of the 2015 Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBT Graphic Novel
A Village Voice Best Graphic Novel of 2014

The renowned graphic-book author Joyce Brabner's Second Avenue Caper is the true story of a tight-knit group of artists and activists living in New York City in the early 1980s who found themselves on the front lines in the fight against AIDS.

Struggling to understand the disease and how they could help, they made a deal with a bona fide goodfella, donned masterful disguises, piled into an "A-Team" van, and set off for the border, determined to save their bedridden friends by smuggling an experimental drug into the United States from Mexico.

With their community in crisis and the world turned against them, this impassioned gang of misfits never gave up hope as they searched for ways to raise awareness and beat the plague. Fast-paced, poignant, and beautifully illustrated by the award-winning illustrator Mark Zingarelli, Second Avenue Caper is a heartfelt tribute to the generation that faced down AIDS.

Review

“Writer Joyce Brabner and artist Mark Zingarelli's true tale of early-1980s gay activists fighting the AIDS epidemic by running illegal antiviral drugs (and pot) from south of the border is as funny, and harrowing, as its mix of drag queens, mobsters, Cheez Whiz, and eulogies promises.” ―R. C. Baker, Village Voice

“[Second Avenue Caper] bears the gravitas of a troubling moment in history, drawing compelling lines toward its present and future ramifications. It both burns with righteous anger and tenderly embraces the many whose lives have been touched by the AIDS plague.” ―Dave Wheeler, Shelf Awareness (starred review)

“Second Avenue Caper captures the pathos, tragedy, sweetness and mania of the early days of the AIDS pandemic. Creators Joyce Brabner and Mark Zingarelli bring it to life and make it sing.” ―Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing

“With visuals that blend cartoon-style appeal with documentary realism, Brabner's (American Splendor) chronicle of grassroots activism in N.Y.C.'s gay community during the early days of the AIDS crisis grabs readers from its opening splash page . . . Zingarelli crisply illustrates a story long hidden.” ―Publishers Weekly

“A graphic memoir detailing a pot-dealing scheme that helped finance treatment for those dying from AIDS in the early days before the epidemic even had that name . . . [written with a] humorous spirit of irreverence, though the subject is deadly serious . . . a story of early warning, recognition and action.” ―Kirkus

“Neatly converting the old NRA bumper sticker to proclaim that if drugs are outlawed, only outlaws will receive proper medical attention, with Second Avenue Caper Joyce Brabner and Mark Zingarelli expertly document a recent moment in history that already seems medieval in its ignorance. In an irresistible narrative crammed with drag queens, drug smugglers, and desperadoes, Brabner brings her considerable skills and experience as an activist and chronicler to bear upon an emblematic tale of our times, as classically heroic and moving as it is absurd, all brought to life by the beautifully honest and lucid artwork of the tremendous Zingarelli. This is a marvelous piece of work and a significant contribution to future histories of our stupefyingly complex times. I can't recommend it highly enough.” ―Alan Moore, award-winning graphic novelist and author of Watchmen, V for Vendetta, and From Hell

“At that liminal moment when it became clear that a pattern of infection threatened to become a deadly epidemic, heroes emerged from the ranks of the ordinary. They were motivated by the desire to help friends survive this pitiless disease, or, in many cases, to make sure they died loved and cared for. Second Avenue Caper presents portraits of a few of these heroes, bringing them to life on the page as they describe, in their own words, ingenious plots to secure medication and provide care for those who had fallen ill with AIDS. These stories are told with humor and poignance, in such a way that the reader feels included in the conversation, as if listening to war stories narrated by old friends. This brilliant collaborative work between Joyce Brabner and Mark Zingarelli is an important contribution to the social history of the AIDS epidemic.” ―Phoebe Gloeckner, author of The Diary of a Teenage Girl

“I love Second Avenue Caper! Joyce Brabner has crafted a tight tale that is a powerful, intimate, and inspirational reminder of the strength of the human spirit in the face of unspeakable tragedy. Mark Zingarelli's artwork is nothing short of spectacular. There's a brilliant cinematic quality to his work, and the drawings delight with exceptional detail and sympathetic portrayals. Zingarelli is a master craftsperson, and this book shows him at the top of his form. Second Avenue Caper really is the perfect blend of words and pictures.” ―Robert Newman, creative director of Newmanology and former design director of Entertainment Weekly, Details, New York, and Vibe

“The earliest days of the AIDS epidemic in America can seem a world away now, but Joyce Brabner's illustrated oral history, as brought to life by Mark Zingarelli's crisp illustrations, reminds those of us who were there--and will enlighten those who weren't--about that era's paradoxical mix of terror, death, and heroism in behalf of a community.” ―Howard Cruse, award-winning artist and author of Stuck Rubber Baby and The Complete Wendel

“A potent example of the power of the individual in the face of almost unimaginable crisis. Raymond is Brabner's main interview subject, and Mark Zingarelli's simple black and white illustrations of him are undeniably striking. Ray is possessed of a most memorable kind of warm melancholy; drawings of him are a masterful combination of strength and sadness, of resilience and determination tempered by a sense of inevitable loss . . . Second Avenue Caper should be required reading. Its ability to testify to a period of history mainstream America is not often privy to is a step towards trying to make America better for everyone.” ―Carolyn Marcille, Artvoice

By Sandy Cronin
This is a great story that deserves to be told in an easily-read format like this; it starts in the early days when gay men were falling sick but nobody really knew why, and is told from the point of view of someone who was there on the front lines, centered around trips some of them took to Mexico to smuggle in medication to help their friends who were dying. Engaging and honest, the story and artwork work well together.

Heartfelt Story from the AIDS Scare Era

Very moving and gently told story about a group of friends coping with the AIDS crisis in the early 1980s. Full of bittersweet moments and real, imperfect characters. Better than the HBO's movie with Matt Bohmer.

An excellent translation of a genius's work
By A Customer
Buchner, unknown to many readers, stands as one of the great prophets of literature. By predicting future literary movements and historical trends, Buchner stands at the head of some of the greatest literature of the modern world. His influence in the Theater of the Absurd, Existentialism, and the reaction against Hegelian idealism attest to his genius. Considered by many to be much too ahead of his time (maybe even still ahead of our time), his works are critical in understanding the modern mind. Mueller's translation is excellent and his introduction serves well in introducing the reader to the world of Buchner.

The complete oeuvre of this short-lived revolutionary writer
By apagdon@berkely.com
This thin volume contains the complete plays and writings of one of the most influential playwrights of modern drama. Though dead at the age of 23, Buchner is considered by many to be the progenitor of such varied schools of drama as Theater of the Absurd and Expressionism, Buchner stood years ahead of his time with the deep psychological treatment he gave his characters. All of his plays and his revolutionary political writings are included here. The Mueller translations are an essential addition to any dramatic library.
