The Deacon ReaderFrom Paulist Press

The essays collected in this book, which is sure to be at the foundation of every deacon's library, aim to give the reader an overview of the theological and pastoral nature of the diaconate and thus to clarify the fundamental identity of the deacon, for those who are discerning such a call as aspirants and those who are already candidates for the office. Editor and contributor James Keating divides the book into three sections: historical foundations, pastoral foundations, and sociological foundations for the diaconate, i.e., the core elements of the diaconal identity. Some of the subjects covered are the history of the diaconate, the morality of the deacon, the deacon and work, and the deacon's wife. The most significant deacon theologians contribute to this text as well as priest experts on the diaconate. It is a complete systematic academic text for the first years of formation of deacons according to the New Roman National Directory (2005). As such, it is indispensable. This is the first text ever that specifies the theological formation of the deacon student over a range of themes and specialties. There is nothing like it in print.

Highly recommended
By Brandon J. Kraft
I purchased this book from a vendor at a deacon's continuing education conference (sorry Amazon! Disclosure: I'm not a deacon; I was hired by the conference to provide AV support.)

As I discern if I'm called to the order of deacons, I found this book very insightful and provided great depth without a steep learning curve. Previously, I had read some about the theology of a deacon, but nothing compared to the ease of reading of this material. That being said, the material was "easy" or "light"; it was easy to read while challenging my academic and spiritual senses.

If you're interested in the meaning of "deacon", read this book. Look up the Catholic Press Association book awards, this text just won a few.

Excellent overview for aspirants.

Very well written overall. Great historical background on the deaconate and its return post-Vatican II. The theological chapters were fairly heavy for someone without a theology background.

It was ok, I've seen better from the author. Too much theology and not enough spirituality . Could have done better on the subject of Deacons bound by the celebacy rule

From Publishers Weekly
Williams's classic play begins with Blanche DuBois's arrival in New Orleans to stay with her sister and brother-in-law, Stella and Stanley Kowalski. The determinedly genteel Blanche is shocked by their lower-class lifestyle—and by Stanley's frequently aggressive behavior. As Blanche's secrets catch up with her, a seedy reality trumps her love for romance. Rosemary Harris embodies Blanche with all the flare, attitude and Southern drawl commonly associated with the cultural icon. The role of Stanley is so physical that his presence is diminished by the lack of a visual performance, but James Farentino's Stanley is excellent. The overall production quality is excellent with musical segues and sound effects that enhance without distracting the listeners. This recording captures the cast of the 1973 Broadway revival (which won Harris a Drama Desk award and Farentino a Theatre World award). (Feb.)

Review
Play in three acts by Tennessee Williams, first produced and published in 1947 and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for drama for that year. One of the most admired plays of its time, it concerns the mental and moral disintegration and ultimate ruin of Blanche DuBois, a former Southern belle. Her neurotic, genteel pretensions are no match for the harsh realities symbolized by her brutish brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

About the Author
Tennessee Williams was born in 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi, where his grandfather was the episcopal clergyman. When his father, a travelling salesman, moved with his family to St Louis some years later, both he and his sister found it impossible to settle down to city life. He entered college during the Depression and left after a couple of years to take a clerical job in a shoe company. He stayed there for two years, spending the evenings writing. He entered the University of Iowa in 1938 and completed his course, at the same time holding a large number of part-time jobs of great diversity. He received a Rockefeller Fellowship in 1940 for his play Battle of Angels, and he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1948 and 1955. Among his many other plays Penguin have published The Glass Menagerie (1944), Summer and Smoke (1948), The Rose Tattoo (1951), Camino Real (1953), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), Orpheus Descending (1957), Sweet Bird of Youth (1959), Period of Adjustment (1960), The Night of the Iguana (1961), The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore (1963; revised 1964) and Small Craft Warnings (1972).

TENNESSEE WILLIAMS' MASTERPIECE :"A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE" HAUNTS OUR SOULS
By DEWEY M.
Tennessee Williams is one of America's finest playwrights, and his 1947 Pulitzer-Prize winning "A Streetcar Named Desire" is his undisputed masterpiece. "The Glass Menagerie" moves us to tears and "Suddenly, Last Summer" is luridly fascinating, but "Streetcar" remains in, and haunts, our souls. Sam Staggs, in his definitive history of "Streetcar," correctly describes the play as "a root canal on the soul."
The production of "Streetcar" recorded here played at the Vivian Beaumount Theatre in New York from April-July, 1973. The plot, in brief, concerns Blanche DuBois, who arrives in New Orleans seeking refuge from her troubled past in her sister Stella's small apartment. Blanche hadn't counted on her brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski, being so brutish and intensely sexual, however. She hopes to find a measure of happiness and peace with Stanley's friend Harold Mitchell (Mitch). A lesser playwright than Williams may well have given Blanche, and the audience, a happy ending with Mitch. But neither Williams nor his characters are that easy or simplistic. His characters are not all good or all bad. They exist in a morally gray area; with Williams exposing the harsh realities of life. When the truth of Blanche's sordid past is crudely, relentlessly exposed by Stanley, Mitch cruelly rejects her. Blanche and Stanley have a final, violent confrontation; which in turn leads to one of the most soul-shattering conclusions in theatre history.
The big question here is: how does the 1973 Lincoln Center revival compare to the excellent ensemble cast of Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden in the 1951 film version? Of course, the 1973 cast does not have to contend with the censorship issues that plagued the otherwise outstanding 1951 film version. So, here we have the full text and content of Williams' original play. If you are not familiar with the play, however, I strongly advise you to have a copy of the script with you as you listen to this recording. Otherwise, you might not understand the important actions that occur in several key scenes-- including Stanley's violent actions during the poker game and, more importantly, Stella's exact reaction to it.
Rosemary Harris is often her own worst enemy as Blanche DuBois. Her powerful performance is undermined by her own unfortunate penchant for over-acting in several scenes where a more subtle approach would have been much more effective. Harris totally goes over the top in the scene just before the newspaper boy arrives, ("Ah, me...") and the scene where Blanche describes the suicide of her gay husband; completely ruining the beautiful end line of the scene, when Blanche says to Mitch, "sometimes, there is God-- so quickly!" While she does not match or equal Vivien Leigh's definitive and devastating portrayal, it is truly heartwrenching when Harris' Blanche loses her tenuous grip on reality. Elsewhere, while she is not exactly mis-cast, Patricia Conolly is a rather odd choice, and makes some rather odd acting choices, as Stella. Robert Symonds is merely adequate as Mitch. The most startling surprise here is James Farentino as Stanley. As Sam Staggs shrewdly observes, Farentino "does what few actors can: he makes you forget (Marlon) Brando. To do this, he discards nuance in favor of hustler directness. You hear the price tag in his voice."
The genius of Tennessee Williams and the power of "A Streetcar Named Desire" remains undiminished. This CD recording of one of the greatest plays is essential in the library of every fan of Tennessee Williams and every serious theatre aficionado.

Williams's Intense Desire
By Blaine Bisel
Tennessee Williams's masterfully written drama explores the extremes of fantasy versus reality, the Old South versus the New South, and primitive desire versus civilized restraint. Its meager 142 page spine is no indication of the complexity and significance that Williams achieves in his remarkable work. A strong aspect of the play is Williams's amazingly vivid portrayal of desperate and forsaken characters who symbolize and presumably resolve his battles between extremes. He created and immortal woman in the character of Blanche DuBois, the haggard and fragile southern beauty whose pathetic last grasp at happiness is cruelly destroyed. She represents fantasy for her many outrageous attempts to elude herself, and she likewise represents the Old South with only her manners and pretentions remaining after the foreclosure of her family's estate. The movie version of A Streetcar Named Desire shot Marlon Brando to fame as Stanley Kowalski, a sweat-shirted barbarian and crudely sensual brother-in-law who precipitated Blanche's tragedy. He symbolizes unrestrained desire with the recurring animal motif that follows him throughout the play. A third major character, Stella Kowalski, acts as mediator between her constantly conflicting husband and older sister. She magnifies the New South in her renounce of the Old pretentions by marrying a blue collar immigrant. Conflicts between these and other vividly colorful characters always in light of the cultural New Orleans backdrop provide a reader with a lasting impression and an awe for Williams's impeccable style and intense dialogue.

an emotional rollercoaster
By M. H. Bayliss
It's amazing how much of its original power this play has maintained even though by all accounts it should be dated by now. After all, we have come far, have we not, from the south in those backwards years? Or have we? This was one of the works that we read in my AP English class this year and I was surprised how well a group of 11th graders were able to identify with the sexual tension, the deceptions, the characters and the plot. Blanche's hopeless situation is still quite poignant and Stanley's animal magnetism is something all of them could relate to. After reading the play countless times (and seeing various performances), I can say that this short play packs quite a wallop. Williams fits in a myriad of human emotions into this one short play. If for some reason you missed this one, read it and then rent the movie with Marlon Brando. With memorable characters like Stanley, Stella, Blanch and Mitch who have made their way into our everyday vocubulary, and a sizzling dialogue, it's a lasting work. The movie Body Heat is the closest modern parallel I can think of in terms of setting and mood.

Jean Toomer, Artist: A Study of His Literary Life and Work, 1894-1936, by Nellie Y. McKay

Toomer's literary career began in 1923 with the publication of Cane, the first and one of the finest portrayals of the black experience, and ended, somewhat mysteriously, thirteen years later with the publication of the long poem "Blue Mountain." Toomer and his work were forgotten until the black movement of the late 1960s rediscovered Cane, and a fresh generation of critics praised its aesthetics and philosophical merits. McKay explores the growth and decline of Toomer as a literary artist.

Nellie McKay's study of Jean Toomer is a careful and contexturalized assessment of Toomer and his writings. She resists the tendency in contemporary racial politics to applaud uncritically Toomer's assertions that he was not African American. As is quite obvious to anyone who has studied the 1920s in America, how one looked, as in skin color, was not the only factor that defined one's race; race was imposed brutally by a white institutional system using a variety of criteria; and it was also chosen by African Americans as a protest against the notion that the default American identity was European American. Toomer came from a long line of African Americans who made the political decision to define themselves as Negro despite their mixed-race heritage, in part as solidarity with those millions of darker skinned African Americans who could not "pass" into European-Americanness. Toomer broke with that tradition when he declared he was not Negro, a declaration made, interestingly, only after he had won fame for writing a book, Cane, that most, including his publishers, understood as a book by a Negro. Indeed, McKay's study was the first to interpret Cane as not necessarily a search for racial identity. This book deserves to be read as a needed antidote to the recent canonization of Toomer as a ideologist of post-blackness.

No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies: Women and the Obligations of Citizenship, by Linda K. Kerber

This pioneering study redefines women's history in the United States by focusing on civic obligations rather than rights. Looking closely at thirty telling cases from the pages of American legal history, Kerber's analysis reaches from the Revolution, when married women did not have the same obligation as their husbands to be "patriots," up to the present, when men and women, regardless of their marital status, still have different obligations to serve in the Armed Forces.

An original and compelling consideration of American law and culture, No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies emphasizes the dangers of excluding women from other civic responsibilities as well, such as loyalty oaths and jury duty. Exploring the lives of the plaintiffs, the strategies of the lawyers, and the decisions of the courts, Kerber offers readers a convincing argument for equal treatment under the law.

Amazon.com Review
In the second half of the 20th century, "rights talk," characteristic of political and legal discourse in the United States, has been forcefully invoked by minorities and women in their respective quests for equal treatment under the law. In No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies, University of Iowa history professor Linda K. Kerber looks at the other side of the rights equation: the issue of obligations. Kerber argues that while men's rights have been bought by their obligations to public service, for women the obligations were to family. Absolution from public service--the constitutional right to be "ladies"--has clear roots in the principle of coverture, by which a woman's legal identity is absorbed by a man's, be it her father, husband, or other protector. This, Kerber writes, is not a boon for women. Women have always had obligations, she notes, it is merely "the forms and objects of demand" that have differed, and disparities between the obligations of men and women have affected women's qualitative ability to exercise rights, such as trial by a jury of one's peers. Kerber presents a series of narratives focusing on particular women whose situations became catalysts for political and legal change and the women, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who helped effect those transformations. No Constitutional Right to Be Ladies is engrossing reading for layperson and scholar alike. --Julia Riches

From Publishers Weekly
Abby and Julia Smith, two 19th-century women who challenged their obligation to pay taxes because they were denied the vote, are among the many extraordinary women portrayed in this fascinating history by the author of Women of the Republic and Toward an Intellectual History of Women. In invoking such figures, Kerber illustrates the development of American law defining women's civic obligations from Revolutionary times to the present. Beginning with the distasteful common law doctrine of coverture, Kerber, a history professor at the University of Iowa, describes how the law, past and present, has shielded women from civic obligations otherwise exacted from men. Kerber finds that coverture, which reduced women's civic identities to those of their husbands, "camouflage[d] practices that made them more vulnerable to other forms of public and private power." With this insight, she links women's exemption from civic duties such as jury or military service to the denial of women's civic rights, such as suffrage, a jury of her peers, aid, citizenship, property, even her body. Backing this thoughtful analysis, Kerber presents meticulous research in a nonideological and lively manner. In each of Kerber's discussions of specific civic obligations and rights, she depicts a process of continuous evolution. By combining careful analysis of the law with examples of women challenging the status quo, Kerber offers a unique and powerful history of the continuing struggle for equality.

From Library Journal
This is a groundbreaking legal and intellectual history of Americans' changing understanding of the obligations of women as citizens from Revolutionary times to the present. In five lengthy chapters, Kerber (history, Univ. of Iowa; Toward an Intellectual History of Women, LJ 4/15/97) examines the obligations of loyalty, avoidance of vagrancy, payment of taxes, jury duty, and military service. She demonstrates that women have experienced these obligations differently from men, owing in part to the English heritage of coverture in which a married woman's legal identity was subsumed by that of her husband and in which obligation to the husband overrode obligations to the state. As women's rights to property, suffrage, and control of their bodies were established, the question of their civic duties was raised and the nature of these duties redefined. Not a straightforward narrative of progress, this is instead a complex set of stories of court cases and legal decisions that circle back on one another even as questions of women's privileges and exclusion persist. This is informative book about how the Constitutional law has been constructed in regards to female citizenry. It is an academic book, by a historian about law history and its alignment with women's rights as citizens. If you want to wrap your brain around the history of law and women as citizens, this is a solid resource.

Another great book from Kerber -
By A Customer
I have read a lot of women's and Constitutional history, and still my jaw literally dropped open several times while reading this book. Her use of real scenarios made the book readable and enjoyable. People have said lately that we are focused too much on our rights and not our responsibilities; it's scary to see that whether women must bear the responsibilities of citizenship is still in many ways an open question.

Readable, well documented and informative
By A Customer
I'm definately interested in reading and understanding more about the situation women face today. This book was an incredibly informative education on the evolution of debate about what exactly is a woman's place in society. It helped clarify vague confusion I've felt about things being not yet fully equal, but not having the background or vocabulary to explain why.

A few flaws
By Ansley Wallace
A very good introductory book, but it should include all subbspecies. There is also room in the coverage of the anole to discuss the "roach" on the back of the neck of breeding males. There needs to be a photo of this, because if you encounter one, you might think it is a different species, as I did this summer (thank goodness for the internet!). One small criticism is the description of the box turtle as having a brown carapace. This should read "brown to jet black". There is definitely a good percentage of Caroilna's box turtles that have BLACK shells !

Great for regional guide
By Not2Lazy
This is a perfect book for identifying reptiles and amphibians in the mid-Atlantic region. I live on a farm and spend a lot of time outdoors, so I encounter critters a lot. This book is the first one I grab to look up details on natural history, ranges, details of their ecology, etc. I also go hiking and backpacking a lot, and see things that I want to look up when I get back home. I have several field guides for both reptiles and amphibians, but having a regional guide narrows down the choices, and also shows the local/regional details for species whose ranges extend beyond this region, especially those that show a lot of subspecific/regional phenotypic variation. I have a copy of the first edition, and the changes in the taxonomy (splitting of salamanders, e.g.) makes this one a great book for the recent changes. Good pictures, good range maps, good natural history details-- that's exactly what you want in a guide like this.

Blurred Borders: Transnational Migration between the Hispanic Caribbean and the United States, by Jorge Duany

In this comprehensive comparative study, Jorge Duany explores how migrants to the United States from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico maintain multiple ties to their countries of origin.

Chronicling these diasporas from the end of World War II to the present, Duany argues that each sending country's relationship to the United States shapes the transnational experience for each migrant group, from legal status and migratory patterns to work activities and the connections migrants retain with their home countries. Blending extensive ethnographic, archival, and survey research, Duany proposes that contemporary migration challenges the traditional concept of the nation-state. Increasing numbers of immigrants and their descendants lead what Duany calls "bifocal" lives, bridging two or more states, markets, languages, and cultures throughout their lives. Even as nations attempt to draw their boundaries more clearly, the ceaseless movement of transnational migrants, Duany argues, requires the rethinking of conventional equations between birthplace and residence, identity and citizenship, borders and boundaries.

Work of Self-Representation: Lyric Poetry in Colonial New England (Gender & American Culture) (Gender and American Culture), by Ivy Schwei

In The Work of Self-Representation Ivy Schweitzer examines early American poetry through the critical lens of gender. Her concern is not the inclusion of female writers into the canon; rather, she analyzes how the metaphors of "woman" and "feminine" function in Puritan religious and literary discourse to represent both the "otherness" of spiritual experience and the ways in which race and class function to keep the "other" in marginalized positions.

Schwetizer argues that gender was for seventeenth-century new England -- and still is today -- a basic and most politically charged metaphor for the differences that shape identity and determine cultural position. To glimpse the struggle between gender ideology and experience, Schweitzer provides close readings of the poetry of four New Englanders writing between the Great Migration and the first wave of the Great Awakening: John Fiske, Edward Taylor, Anne Bradstreet, and Roger Williams.

Schweitzer focuses exclusively on lyric poetry, she says, because a first-person speaker wrestling with the intricacies of individual consciousness provides fruitful ground for exploring the politics of voice and identity and especially problems of authority, intertextuality, and positionality. Fiske and Taylor define the orthodox tradition, and Bradstreet and Williams in different ways challenge it. Her treatment of the familiar poetry of Bradstreet and Taylor is solidly grounded in historical and literary scholarship yet suggestive of the new insights gained from a gender analysis, while discussions of Fiske and Williams bring their little-known lyric work to light.

Taken together, these poets' texts illustrate the cultural construction of a troubled masculinity and an idealized, effaced femininity implicit in the Puritan notion of redeemed subjectivity, and constitute a profoundly disturbing and resilient part of our Puritan legacy.

Review
A sophisticated treatment of self-representation in colonial American lyric poetry. Schweitzer's work is ground-breaking. Her command of the immense secondary literature on New England Puritanism is unquestionable, and her ability to marry such work to the best being done in gender studies has resulted in the best book on its subject in two decades. Schweitzer's book deserves wide reading among scholars interested in early American history and culture, in gender studies, and in cultural theory generally conceived.--Philip F. Gura, editor of Early American Literature

Adds a new voice to the increasingly interesting theorizing of colonial American literature. Reading The Work of Self-Representation is like discovering America all over again.--Cathy N. Davidson, editor of American Literature
