Gowler is Pierce Professor of Religion, Oxford College of Emory University; Senior Faculty Fellow at the Center for Ethics, Emory University; and Co-Editor of Emory Studies in Early Christianity. readable, sometimes entertaining overview of the topic

Personally I find the What are they Saying About, series to be very useful short overviews of biblical scholarship that are accessible to the general reader.

In terms of format, endnotes are used instead of footnotes, the later which I prefer so that one does not have to flip constantly to the back of the book.

Lacks an index, but it does have a very small annotated bibliography though no bibliography of sources cited.

Though published by a Roman Catholic Press, Paulist Press, I found this to be relatively free from sectarian bias, the bias I suspect some might complain about is that of the "academy" which for some people undermines people's faith - not a view I share or about which I am really that concerned.

There are seven chapters 1 Modern Quest 2. Continuing Quest 3. Jesus Seminar and its critics 4. Eschatological Prophet 5. Mediterranean Jewish Peasant and borderless Kingdom 6. Elijah-like Eschatological prophet 7. Eschatological Prophet of Social Change

Great as an overview of the thinkers, but maybe not so strong on Jesus and general history writing. Still a highly recommended book as a brief overview of the issue, highly recommend the series in fact

Great Introduction to the Scholarship around the Historical Jesus

Great introduction to the history of scholarly dialogue and the ongoing scholarly dialogue about the historical Jesus. Really great introduction that sends you reading many other good books about it. It goes over the main areas of interest in such dialogue, as well. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the historical Jesus!
Gowler is also a very good writer. He uses plain language and is easy to read even when discussing complex scholarly matters.

Excellent review -- but, be careful

Gowler presents an excellent summation of "Historical Jesus" research, both past and present. Even though he must fit a huge amount of material into this volume, he is nevertheless able to cover the main points with aplomb. The Endnotes are extremely helpful as well for following up on some of the authors. He covers such scholars well-known as: David Strauss; Albert Schweitzer; E. P. Sanders; N. T. Wright; as well as the work of some lesser-known "Jesus scholars" as: Dale Allison and Paula Frederiksen. He also covers the scholarly group, the "Jesus Seminar," and reactions to its work (e.g., by Luke Timothy Johnson). His summaries of ideas is brilliant: Gowler offers a general sketch of his subjects and their ideas without losing sight of each one's particular nuances and distinctions.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to know where "Jesus Research" has been and where it stands right now. As a Theology Instructor, I have been using it as a re-fresher to my own knowledge and as a guidepost for where I should be looking for further reading.

One caveat, or caution regarding the "Jesus Seminar": While Gowler presents and excellent summary of the Seminar's methodology, assumptions, and conclusions about the "Historical Jesus," he is not so evenhanded in my opinion when it comes to the Seminar's critics. Gowler's chpater on the Seminar can seem at times to be an apologia or defense for the Seminar's motives and its work. He is a little bit severe on the Seminar's critics, like Luke Johnson above and N. T. Wright. Gowler reveals: that some of his personal colleagues were founding members of the "Jesus Seminar" . . . that he himself joined and participated (albeit, lightly) in the "Jesus Seminar," when he was a graduate student . . . that he was part of a group assembled by Robert Funk, the Seminar's creator, to do some project -- he doesn't say what -- which was later disbanded. So, Gowler has several connnections to the "Jesus Seminar," its members, and its work. Yet, he chooses to reveal of this information in an endnote for the chapter, for which one has turn all the way to the back of the book to discover. Information such as this is NOT in my humble opinion: "endnote material." Gowler's connection to the "Jesus Seminar" needed to be stated upfront and at the beginning of the Chapter. His connection to it helps contextualize for me some of the defensiveness and negativity towwards critics which runs throughout the chapter.

Still, an excellent volume, which I still highly recommend!

FABULOUS APPROACH TO HISTORY

A friend gave me a copy of this book last night and said "tell me what you think about this". Truth be told, I never thought I'd ever read a graphic novel as I'm a 71 year old Columbia guy but when I set out to read "The Great American Documents", one section at a time, I immediately got hooked.

Did you know that Uncle Sam was a real person? Who knew?

So.......great information, really well written so it's easy to enjoy...........I'm going to finish reading and then send a copy to each of our children and grandkids.

A an excellent overview of the Saint's writings

This book was an excellent overview of St. Alphonsus' moral and spiritual teaching. Being the only Doctor of the Church in the area of Morality, his teaching is of great value. In addition, his presentation is very balanced and easily understood. In particular, this selection includes a small composition that is worth the entire cost of the book: Conformity to God's Will. There is much that is worth reading which would undoubtedly enrich anyone's spiritual life. My only wish would be that the book included additional selections from the wealth of his writings, such as on what he had to say about the priesthood.

Word of caution, some works are abridged

The major works like 'On the Practise of the Love of Christ' and 'On the Glories of Mary' are highly abridged, from their original size of about a 150 pages each been shortened down to less than 50 pages. I highly recommend reading the original versions of these works instead which are available in their full glory on Amazon. The two aforesaid along with 'Preparation for Death' and "Prayer: The Great Means of Obtaining Salvation and All the Graces Which We Desire of God" which St Alphonsus himself rates as his greatest work, are surely some of the most wonderful works you will ever read and the surest guides to eternal life and rank with the works of St John of the Cross (Ascent of Mount Carmel if you were to pick one) and those of St Theresa of Avila, if you could only pick two other saints and then die.

The book is worth buying for the sake of the other shorter works like 'On Conformity to God's Will' which is highly recommended, and 'A way of conversing with God continually with God as a friend' which are present in their complete form. This together with a multitude of other spiritual jewels will make the book a worthwhile buy, I am sure, however I lack the reading at present to comment on all of these, so will have to update this in time. My advice for those seeking spiritual edification and are not hardened academics who already possess this, is to buy the works I have mentioned in their complete form, you will not regret these, and if you have money left over, then buy this one too, it is very professionally done and edited to a high level. The Blue Ridge Mountains run 500 miles from Pennsylvania to Georgia and take in some of the eastern United States' wildest country, including seven national parks and many state parks and wilderness areas. The mountain chain also embraces, environmental journalist Steve Nash writes, 29 species of snakes, 70 species of mammals, more than 200 species of birds, 70 species of fish, 1400 species of flowering plants, and more than 130 species of trees--almost as many as can be found in all of Europe. The richness is astonishing, but also, Nash writes, seemingly unappreciated, for the Blue Ridge is now under threat from industrial, commercial, and residential development, with acid rain and other hazards affecting its many ecosystems. Guiding his readers through many scenarios on how these environmental problems might best be lessened, Nash points out that conflicting scientific data lends an "illusion of precision" to the idea, on one hand, that nature will automatically right itself or, on the other hand, that catastrophic change is irreversible. Neither case, he suggests, is strictly true, and he invites his readers to participate in the business of developing a vision for the Blue Ridge's sustainable future. Nash (journalism, Univ. of Richmond) provides a fascinating account of the economic and ecological forces shaping the Blue Ridge, a segment of the Appalachian Mountains running from Pennsylvania to Georgia. Much of the region is protected in national parks and other wilderness areas, but Nash demonstrates the pervasive negative influence of human activity on plants and animals even in remote areas. Acid rain, pollution, alien species and pests, suburban development, logging, and road building all stress the environment. Nash shows how changes in the forest, such as the loss of chestnut and hemlock trees, have ripple effects that threaten other species like the minuscule moss spider. Nash does have reason to hope, including efforts to find disease-resistant trees to reforest damaged areas, policy initiatives to control growth and pollution, and efforts by local citizens to fight industries that damage the environment. Excellent Expostion of Connecting Faith and Daily Life

This book is a gem. It should find its way into the hands of every person doing ministry in the Church. Michael and Kenneth Himes have written a book that needed to written some time ago. They have helped Catholics to see that Theology is a not a remote and abstract human science confined to the academy. It is rather and exposition and a praxis of the Gospel addressing the "signs of the times." But they go beyond this too! They demonstrate how the foundational dogmas and doctines of the Catholic faith connect with the realities of public life. That is faith cannot be neutral and disconnected from public life but is called to bring the vision of the Catholic way of life into the discussion of the polis as to how policies are to be shaped and effectuated in the light of the dignity of every human person.
This book deserves wide readership among clergy and laity alike. I would especially recommend it for all deacon candidates.

Stretching For Health: Your Handbook for Ultimate Wellness,

I find Stretching For Health to be exceptionally well-written. Many confusing and conflicting health concepts are explained in a way such that motivates me to try something different. It offers good reminders throughout to take small steps and encourages me to realize that even a failed goal can be a success. Thus, it has helped my attitude about overall fitness.
I like that stretching seems to be a metaphor throughout, ie. stretch yourself to new ideas of lefestyle.
The stretches have helped me considerably. I've had low back pain for over ten years and have tried many things and therapies. Everything I tried seemed to help only a short while. I began the 7 minute low back routine and noticed consistently less pain and greater ease of movement at work. I have since incorporated more areas of my body in a daily stretching routine and I've been feeling much better overall. The stretches are nicely illustrated and the movements are clearly described.
I've recommended this book to many friends who have been plagued with daily aches and pains. I'm pleased to have found this book.

Stretching for Health

This slender book is about much more than stretching but even disregarding its chapters about wellness, nutrition, etc. I'd wholeheartedly recommend it for its simple, clear description of Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) and its excellent set of stretches. If you're looking for an in depth discussion of AIS, then you might want a book by AIS founder, Aaron Mattes. But if you're trying to put together an easy to follow stretching routine, then Stretching for Health can't be beat. I own at least a dozen books about stretching and SfH is my favorite. Whether I'm doing a quick 5 to 10 minute warmup or a full body 30 minute stretching session, this is the book I turn to.

Fabulous Stretching Handbook

THis is a great book on stretching for all parts of your body and every muscle. It also expains the ulitimate importance of
body flexibility and nutrition. All in all it is a very informative book for all parts of the body it is definately worth the read!!
