Written by a priest professor at the Gregorian Institute in Rome, a scholarly Jesuit priest renowned for his academic abilities, the book presents the genesis and meaning of our Church's most important social document of our time, a document now ignored at our peril as a species and a spirit.
Gaudium et Spes pronounces strongly our Church's and our Faith's position on matters such as war and peace, human rights, economics, international relations and so much more that needs to be addressed prophetically as a Church now more than other. In fact in conjunction with other official documents and pronouncements of our Church, we find ourselves as practicing Catholics unable to support in any way directly or indirectly the Iraqi invasion and its continued immoral, indefensible, illegal engagement.
The authoritative Reverend Father Tanner comprehensively reveals the roots of this document and its implications today. He also explores another document regarding the mass media. This volume, admirably published by that great and Catholic printing house, the Paulist Press, deserves a place in every Catholic library and household, and time in every Catholic hand as we pray about our mission in the modern world and our actions and words among other persons.

This book, The Church and the World, has clarifying commentary on Gaudium et spes, revealing the meaning of each section of the Vatican 2 document. If you want to know what the Cardinals and Bishops meant when they wrote it, this will help you understand the combination of sections. Part 1: The Church and Man's calling is covered in sections 11-45. Part 11; Some problems of special urgency (46-93) covers marriage and family, economic and social life, , the political community and the fostering of peace. It is interesting that this document comes from the late 1960s, and it does not mention the current problems in the Middle East, but references atheism, as it was in the time of the Cold War with Russia. It also covers science and the church's role in our changing society.
