This book is easy to read and understand. It offers a compassionate and lovingly honest approach to pastoral care relationships in a way that empowers the reader to respond in truly meaningful ways when others are hurting. It brings God into the centre of person-to-person relating. The knowledge I have gained from this valuable resource has been a blessing in my relating with everyone around me ... family, friends, colleagues ... and in my understanding of myself as a relational being as well.

This book is an attempt to understand both the past and the present, the now largely vanished world of the folk potter and the continuing achievements of his descendants. It is a tribute that is long overdue.

From the middle of the eighteenth century through the second quarter of the twentieth century, folk potters in North Carolina produced thousands of pieces of earthenware and stoneware -- sturdy, simple, indispensable forms like jars and jugs, milk crocks and butter churns, pitchers and dishes, ring jugs and flowerpots. Their wares were familiar and everyday, not innovative or unusual, because they were shaped through generations of use for specific functions. The utilitarian forms were so commonplace and embedded in daily life that few individuals documented the craft. Turners and Burners is the first book to chronicle these pottery traditions, with close attention to distinct regional and temporal patterns and the major families involved. It explores in detail the traditional technologies used, from the foot-powered treadle wheel to the wood-fired groundhog kiln.

Terry Zug became interested in North Carolina pottery in 1969 shortly after moving to Chapel Hill. In 1974 he began documenting the craft and traveled throughout the state recording the reminiscences of potters, former potters, and members of potters' families who recalled the old craft in remarkable detail. He systematically photographed and cataloged old pots, located early shop sites, and carefully recorded the remaining waster dumps of broken shards and decaying equipment. His primary source, however, was the potters themselves. Their tape-recorded interviews provide an insider's view of their world and reveal the powerful underlying logic and autonomy of their craft.

A teriffic account of the history & tradition of NC pottery.

Turners and Burners is a must for anyone interested in North Carolina Folk pottery. It presents the history starting with the first potters to settle in the region to the evolution of the trade that lives on today.
Charles Zug does an outstanding job of presenting the culture and the mindset that guided the craft through generations of potters spanning over two centuries.
And the technologies of the craft is given ample attention, through interesting descriptions, drawings, and photographs. A prime example is the discussion of how alkaline glaze kilns differed from the salt kilns in terms of design, firing methods, and durability.
This is a great book, full of useful information to the researcher as well as praticing potters.

Well-written, in-depth account of folk pottery in N.C.

This book is for anyone who is interested in the history of pottery in North Carolina. The book focuses on pottery as necessary to the rural way of life. Turners and Burners makes the reader appreciate the functional designs of the early potters.
It explores three rich pottery areas in the state - Catawba Valley, Seagrove area and Moravian potters. Many families in these areas are still turning out pottery. The book goes into great detail about Burlon Craig, who is considered the last folk potter in North Carolina.
Sections of the book reviews glazes, kiln construction and functionality of different container designs. Also, it reviews whimsies, face jugs and ring jugs and their place in the pottery tradition of North Carolina.
Turners and Burners gives the reader a great appreciation for the history of pottery in the North Carolina. It will make you want to plan a trip to Seagrove or the Catawba Valley.

An Essential NC Pottery Book

This is an essential work on traditional North Carolina pottery. Charles Zug is a long-time student of the craft and this book reflects a tremendous depth of research and knowledge. The book's focus is on the historic development of North Carolina pottery as a folk craft, beginning with Colonial era pioneers and continuing through the early 1980s. Along the way, Zug educates the reader in techniques, materials, forms, and many of the potters themselves. "Turners and Burners" is a standard-setter and for anyone getting started in North Carolina pottery is an essential reference tool.

story of a nutcase

Cardozo was born in Spain as a Catholic to a family that had once been Jewish but had converted to Christianity to avoid persecution (so-called "conversos"). In his 20s, Cardozo escaped to Venice and converted back to Judaism. In the last half of the 17th century, Cardozo underwent a bizarre spiritual journey: first becoming a devotee of the false Messiah Sabbatai Zevi, then adopting a kind of quasi-polytheism distinguishing between the "First Cause" and the "God of Israel", and then in his old age having messianic delusions about himself.

This work is a biography of Cardozo and an anthology of his writings. The writings are of interest only as unintentional humor.

The biography is more interesting; the author suggests that Cardozo's Christian background, when combined with kabbalistic mysticism, may have predisposed him towards some of his ideas (for example, Cardozo argued that Zevi was Messiah precisely because he was disowned by many Jews- just as some Gospels suggest Jesus was).

Elizabeth Lawrence was the first woman to receive a degree in landscape architecture from the North Carolina State College School of Design. Her own legendary gardens in Raleigh and Charlotte provided the background for her books and columns.

Illustrations may not be satisfactory

This is a charming book that is extremely valuable for gardeners in Zone 7. The copy in my local library has delicate color illustrations that added a lot to my enjoyment of the book, but the paperback I ordered new from Amazon.com had muddy black-and white versions of the original illustrations. (I don't know if the hardcover pictures are in color.) I've managed to find used copies with color illustrations.

Not just for Zone 8 Gardening...

In the fifties, when I was growing up in North Carolina, Miss Lawrence was known in garden circles all over the state as she had been an active gardener and writer for a number of years. I am pleased to see "A Southern Garden" which she wrote in 1942 back in print. RE-reading her words is like listening to an old friend.
She lived and gardened first in Raleigh, then in Charlotte (both Zone 8). The winters in Zone 7 were a bit colder, but many of the plants she recommended for Zone 8, survived in Zone 7 where my family lived and gardened. Given global warming, I think much of Zone 7, which extends right up the East Coast--almost to New England (?)--is now verging on becoming Zone 8 -- at least the part that lies east of the "fall line" on the coastal plain.
I have lived in Arlington, Virginia for a number of years, and have seen a decided shift in the climate in my area. Crepe Myrtles that used to live no futher north than Fredericksburg and die back to the ground in Arlington don't. And Catbirds, a real southerner are nesting in my yard. Both of these are Zone 8 transplants.
Even though I am technicaly in the lower edge of Zone 7, I can grow almost anything Miss Lawrence discusses in her book "A Southern Garden" in my garden. My house is on the "fall line" however, and just west of me the winters are a tad too cold for some things. But if you live in Zone 7, and like a plant try it. If it lives great, if not you've gained some wonderful experience.
Most importantly, pay attention to Miss Lawrence when she describes the 'old timey gardens' -- some say there is nothing new under the sun, and though that might not be entirely correct, many of the old plant forms she discusses are still extant.

A must have for anyone gardening in the South.

This book is a window into the way our Grandmother's gardened. Miss Lawrence describes in her own wonderful and modest style where she purchased plants and how plants she admired performed either in her garden or in the garden's of her friend's. Her descriptions are informative and often humorous. Anyone serious about gardening in the South should own this book as a reference guide. Even a non-gardener would enjoy this lovely book.

Common Sense For Uncommon Times

I thought this book provided common day sense and knowledge that can be applied to make sense of the uncommon things that have been going on in our world lately. The author, although Catholic, speaks from the perspective that all of us who love God are able to understand. He is very sensitive with his words but makes very strong points.

Behind the "Big Houses" of the antebellum South existed a different world, socially and architecturally, where slaves lived and worked. John Michael Vlach explores the structures and spaces that formed the slaves' environment. Through photographs and the words of former slaves, he portrays the plantation landscape from the slaves' own point of view.

The plantation landscape was chiefly the creation of slaveholders, but Vlach argues convincingly that slaves imbued this landscape with their own meanings. Their subtle acts of appropriation constituted one of the more effective strategies of slave resistance and one that provided a locus for the formation of a distinctive African American culture in the South.

Vlach has chosen more than 200 photographs and drawings from the Historic American Buildings Survey--an archive that has been mined many times for its images of the planters' residences but rarely for those of slave dwellings. In a dramatic photographic tour, Vlach leads readers through kitchens, smokehouses, dairies, barns and stables, and overseers' houses, finally reaching the slave quarters. To evoke a firsthand sense of what it was like to live and work in these spaces, he includes excerpts from the moving testimonies of former slaves drawn from the Federal Writers' Project collections.

YA-In the past, much study was devoted to antebellum plantation houses and to the planters who erected them. The slaves upon whom these estates relied have only just begun to receive scholarly attention. Vlach uses interviews with former slaves, photographs, and architectural drawings from the 1930s and '40s to analyze how the black population fit into this environment. The author dispels the Gone with the Wind myth of sterile-white fiefdom and builds an accurate portrayal of plantations as dynamic places that were dominated by the master, yet still influenced by the slaves. This book should fascinate students of American history.

Half of this book I really liked. That part described the numerous buildings that helped make up a plantation - apart from the manor house itself. It gave me a good feeling for how they were built and what happened in them, and included lots of excellent pictures and diagrams (mostly from WPA work from the 1930s and 1940s).

The part of the book I didn't like was simply very thin on information. A large part of the book, for example, has Vlach simply describing the buildings pictured. These descriptions are often of the most rudimentary kind - this one has one story, this one has two, this one is made of wood, this one is made of brick. Very little is added, really, that you couldn't get yourself simply from seeing the photos.

What's really annoying, though, is all the filler that comes from his trying to impute meaning to so many things that are simply lacking in any real primary evidence. It sounds like he's read his Eugene Genovese (Roll Jordan Roll), and is trying - desperately - to fit his rather niche topic into that overall academic paradigm.

Here he is, for example, trying to show how slaves' occupying the shacks and workhouses provided them is somehow some kind of revolutionary act of appropriation:

"Acts of territorial appropriation were exceedingly clever because they were carried out, in the main, by by the slaves' occupying the spaces to which they were assigned. Slaves gradually identified these spaces as theirs through a routine of innumerable domestic acts.... Thus, by steady increments, the official order set out by the planter on maps, documents, calendars and schedules and expressed in the forms and locations of buildings, fields, fences, and roads was subtly but certainly turned aside."

I don't mind interpretation like this (in fact, well done, it can be some of the best history there is), but there simply isn't enough there to allow the author to do so with any authority whatsoever.

Excellent Study of Plantation Architecture

John Vlach's book is a thorough study of the architecture of plantation slavery in the South. He primarily used resource materials from the 1930s Historic American Building Survey and WPA interviews with former slaves to develop a social history. The research is solid and comprehensive. Vlach demonstrates ways to interpret the buildings for information about the life of the people who worked and dwelled in them, and he backs up his conclusions with interview materials. It's a terrific way of studying architecture that merges folklife studies with architectural history. The conclusions expanded my understanding about history, and this book is an essential contribution to learning about black history.

This study of vernacular architecture is a great contribution to the social history of slavery. By looking at facets of design such as settlement patterns and the formal qualities of buildings, Vlach shows how patterns in material culture provide clues for understanding the patterns of history that one can read by examining the buildings. This remarkable book not only documents plantation architecture as an important contribution to the historical record, but it also provides a fascinating interpretation of the subject. It is an especially important study because of the dearth of written documents left by slaves.

Great way to learn about what you see

I love this book. We see a snake in the woods, and take note of as many characteristics as we can, then look it up later to learn more about it. Same with frogs, toads, lizards, skinks! The actual information provided for each reptile is slim but very interesting. This is a great book to have if you spend any time in the wild in Virginia.

Terrific resources as field guide or reference

Excellent book! It's a little more detailed that a typical field guide but what I like most about it is that its specific to our area. So, while I have a larger field guide (for the region) I also really love having this one because it's more focused. In the beginning of the book there's an introduction to habitat with great pictures showing what the habitats look like. The book then goes into the specific species - I was particularly interested in the salamanders and amphibians but the sections on snakes, turtles and lizards are super too. The pictures are great, descriptions cover approx. size, colors/patterns, species that they could be confused with, habitats, and egg laying (timing, incubation etc). Great book to have on hand.

I've had and used this book since it came out in 1980. I always recommend it to all of the classes and seminars I give on reptiles and amphibians and to all of the people who ask for a good field guide because, for the size and cost, there are none better for this part of the country. Well worth the money if a handy, accurate, well-done field guide with great photos and range maps is what you want.
