Coulter sets out to provide readers with "a sampler for heirloom seeds" to learn about and grow. Each of her four chapters focuses on a single season, with an informative essay on its tasks and pleasures and descriptions of heirloom garden plants, including an overview, recommended varieties and helpful growing tips. While the listings are far from exhaustive, they include a wide enough range of edible and ornamental plants to populate a large and varied garden. They also provide well-researched, lively descriptions, including fascinating facts about common plants and their uses throughout history. For example, readers will be delighted to learn that the green paint used to illustrate medieval manuscripts was made from spinach, and that carbon dating has placed the pea as far back as 9750 B.C. This makes Coulter's book an ideal armchair companion to seed catalogues—an extremely popular genre in their own right. Coulter's organization does violate some conventions: vegetables are intermingled with flowers, and annuals are not clearly distinguished from perennials. Still, her stylish, interesting text, an exhaustive listing of sources for heirloom seeds and numerous color and b&w illustrations make this a welcome addition to every gardener's bookshelf. (June)

Another Great Tool for CCD/REP Teachers!

Having used Jennifer Galvin's two other titles, My Catholic Pray and Play Activity Book and My Catholic Lent and Easter Activity Book, I was thrilled to see this one out in time for me to use it with this year's second grade CCD class. My students enjoy the whimsical diversion from their standard text that Ms. Galvin's worksheets provide, and I appreciate being able to give them something they perceive as pure fun that I know is still imparting the lessons of faith and devotion that I'm there to teach. I can't wait to start using these Christmas pages.

Revealing personal accounts of gay veterans who have served with honor in the US military

Very readable oral histories of the lives of gays who have served honorably in our country's armed forces. This book helps those of us who are not gay to understand the added stresses placed on gays who desire a military career by the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. It reveals the devotion of many of these men and women to their careers in the armed forces and the conflicts they experienced in living fulfilling personal lives while performing their military duties with excellence. I would recommend it to both gay and straight readers as a historical accounting with pertinence to our country's ongoing dialogue on integration of gay citizens into the fabric of our national life.

A Treasure

Full disclosure: I am one of the veterans fetured in "Ask and Tell". I do not know the author personally, and I have no financial interest in this book. With that out of the way...

Steve Estes has done a remarkable job. Through the personal accounts of dozens of gay veterans, the author has woven a coherent and compelling narrative. His subjects span every military branch and rank, every kind of family background and all corners of the U.S. They are endearing, instructive and always entertaining. Their stories show just how capricious military policy on homosexuality has been: some serve openly and honorably, others, no less honorable, are hounded out of the service with an indelible stain on their records and on their lives.

It's always a pleasure to swap war stories with fellow vets, young and old. This collection is now a part of that time-honored tradition. Reading it, I felt like those men and women were talking right to me. Their stories conjured so many memories in me - of basic training, barracks life, sexual politics and, yes, war - that I know I will take great delight in reading and re-reading this book for many years to come.

Important historical book...especially interesting since the move to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

This book is now, but will be of even greater historical significance once "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is repealed. It consists of oral histories of 50 gay and lesbian veterans who served in the military, starting from WWII and the Greatest Generation up to present day Iraq and Afghanistan. Also included are the military academies and a section on women's fight to serve on the front line instead of being relegated to office clerks and secretaries. The veterans' stories are compelling, interesting and it gives the reader just how slowly things have changed for generations of gays and lesbians serving our country. These veterans not only faced the pressure of enemy fire, but also homophobia and prejudice from within. It takes people of great strength and resolve to endure all of this. I can't imagine the stress they faced during the time they served.
Hopefully with the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", things will start to improve. This is an important book, especially since most of the veterans from WWII and the Korean War have passed on. But their stories will live on, thanks to the author, Mr. Estes. It is too bad a book couldn't have been written exclusively about WWII veterans.

I noted that some reviewers say they found this book boring. I found the book “Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story: Statesman of the Old Republic by R. Kent Newmyer” fascinating. The author provided a general overview of history that helped place Story in a timeframe for me.
Story was the primary founder and guiding spirit of the Harvard University Law School and the most prolific legal author of the 19th century. Story served on the United States Supreme Count form 1811 to 1845. He served under both Chief Justice Marshall and Chief Justice Taney.

Newmyer covers Story’s early life growing up in Massachusetts the son of Elisha Story a physician and member of the Sons of Liberty who took part in the Boston Tea Party. Story was well versed in the aspirations and goals of the founders of the country. Story graduated from Harvard University in 1798 and read law under Samuel Sewall who later became Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Court. Newmyer covers in depth Story’s life as a lawyer and politician as well as his personal life.

I was most interested in his life on the Court. Story was appointed to the United States Supreme Court by President James Madison in 1811. The author goes into detail about the various key cases that the Court heard and that Story either wrote the majority opinion or the dissenting opinion. The author also covered how the American law came about and how and why it is different from the British Law. Story was an expert on maritime law and created the section of Admiralty law for the U.S. legal system. While on the court he exhaustively studied the patent laws of Europe and made modification specific for the United States. The 19th century was a critical time for patent and copyright law because the laws and protocol as well as a patent office were being established.

In 1829 Story became the first Dane Professor of Law at Harvard University Law School. The author states that Story met with remarkable success as a teacher. Story was a prolific writer, publishing many reviews and magazine article as well as legal books. Story’s three volumes on “Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States” and “Commentaries on the Law” were the dominating books in the legal field in the 19th century and still remains a critical source on the law.

In 1841 Story wrote the opinion for the court on the case of United States V The Amistad. In the 1997 movie directed by Steven Spielberg, Justice Story was played by the retired Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun. The more I read about the Supreme Court and our founding fathers the better understanding I have of the Court today. I am enjoying this year’s (2014) reading project on the Supreme Court so much I think I will continue it for another year. I read this as an e-book via the Kindle app on my iPad.

coudn't get through it.

This is the first book in years that I could not finish. The book would be great for lawyers or law student interested in old case law. The book did correct one misconception I had of the subject, so I could not give it just one star but I can usually fight my way through a book if I have to, but could not with this one.
