St. Ignatius Loyola for teens

It's difficult these days to find heroes for teens, who can inspire them not to give up and to follow their dreams. The life of Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order of Catholic priests, is such an inspiration.
Author Sklar has managed to weave sixteenth century Spanish history and Ignatius's life together in such a way that both are easy to understand and vividly come alive to the reader.
Although this book was written with young adults in mind, as a retired teacher, I find myself still thinking about this wonderful biographical nugget days later. Ignatius' life finds one asking questions like: Where do I find God in my life's journey? What does it mean not to give up? What does it mean to be faithful? What gifts do I have to share with the world today?
Sklar's book has an inviting style that is crisp and doesn't get bogged down in non-essentials. You feel as though you are traveling with this undaunted saint through all of his setbacks and achievements. His zeal becomes contagious! It's an enjoyable biography which is sure to leave you with things to reflect on in your own life.

Good preparation for your Catholic Faith Confirmation

I bought this book for my oldest son as a gift for his Catholic Confirmation. The book is written in a very simplistic style and the language is simple too. I wanted my son to have a good role model to follow as he starts to walk his path into manhood. St. Ignatius is a saint for all times. The story is very encouraging for today's youth looking for someone to look up to in these difficult times.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone looking for a book with a strong message and with exceptional guidelines to live an honorary life. This saint story will change the way you look at life's struggles and how you handle them too!

Ringer analyzes the layers of theatrical self-awareness in all seven
Sophoclean tragedies, giving special attention to Electra, the
playwright's most metatheatrical work. He focuses on plays within plays,
characters who appear to be in rivalry with their playwright in "scripting"
their dramas, and the various roles that characters assume in their attempts to deceive other characters or even themselves. Ringer also examines instances of literal role playing, exploring the implications of the Greek convention of sharing multiple roles among only three actors.

Sophocles has long been praised as one of the masters of dramatic
irony. Awareness of Sophoclean metatheater, Ringer shows, deepens our appreciation of that irony and reveals the playwright's keen awareness of his art.

About the Author
Fr. William Meninger, OCSO, entered St. Joseph s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, in 1963. While there, he developed a contemplative prayer method based on the fourteenth-century classic The Cloud of Unknowing, leading to a prayer method called Centering Prayer. Fr. William moved from St. Joseph s Abbey to St. Benedict s Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado, in 1979, where he has served as prior and novice director. His books include "The Loving Search for God: Contemplative Prayer and the Cloud of Unknowing" and "Bringing The Imitation of Christ into the Twenty-First Century." Most recently he contributed to "Sundays at the Magic Monastery: Homilies from the Trappists of St. Benedict s Monastery" and to St. Benedict's Monastery.

The secrets in dreams

The author of this perceptive & helpful introduction to dreams & their meaning was a longtime clinical psychologist when it was first published in 1986. As a result of that background, he brought not only theory but years of practical, everyday experience to its pages. More than a quarter of a century later, it remains a fine, lucid primer on dreams from a Jungian perspective: how we approach them, what we can learn from them, and how they can help us shape a living, nourishing meaning of life for ourselves.

O'Connor doesn't simply plunge into dream analysis from the start, however. As he explains, "My experience tells me that one must approach dreams as though they are pieces of art, and thus dream analysis itself is a work of art. It is therefore appropriate and desirable that one should work slowly and patiently, spending considerable time in preparation for the task of analysis, just as the ancient Greeks did when they visited the temple of Asclepius, the god of healing."

So he gives us sufficient background to the development of dream analysis, and to the work of Carl Jung & James Hillman in particular, before the expedition into the interior begins in earnest. He has the gift that many lack, in that he can explain something complex with directness & clarity, without any academic dryness or wallowing in arcane jargon. Yet he never dumbs down the material, trusting in the reader's intelligence & attention.

I won't try to summarize these 200+ pages; this sort of material doesn't lend itself to bullet points or the Cliff Notes approach. Suffice it to say that he guides us through the initial steps of dream analysis, always providing enough information for us to follow. What especially strikes me is his humane & compassionate tone throughout. He knows that we'll be going into dark places sometimes, and gives us the basic tools we'll need to safely delve into them.

Still one of the best introductions to the subject that I've read over the decades -- highly recommended!

Very insightful

This book helps better understand what may be behind some of the dreams people dream. It gives insight into the fact that dreams generally deal with the person dreaming the dream rather than others in the dream. Dreams speak to the soul and the spirit inside each person and can help put to rest some of the more unsettling experiences in each person's life. This book does a beautiful job of venturing into this journey. It is slanted more toward the dream work done by Carl Jung, though it does touch a litle on Sigmund Freud's work with dreams as well. Highly recommend.

A sagacious exploration

In "Walking with Gerard Manley Hopkins: A Poet's Journey," Robert Waldron gives his reader an introduction to the work of perhaps the greatest Catholic poet of the last 200 years. For those of us already familiar with Hopkins, the book serves as a reminder of the furious splendor of the Jesuit poet's work, and gives us a uniquely insightful perspective on the motivations and the inclinations (esthetic and otherwise) of this most compelling figure.

The book has three major aims: (1) to present a biography of Gerard Manley Hopkins: to situate him in his time and place, to give the reader an awareness of the religious climate of the day, and to emphasize the seminal importance of Hopkins' work for modern poets; (2) to "unpack," to explain, to illuminate the verse itself (the foresighted reader will have a copy of Hopkins' poems on hand!); to shed light on poetry that can be famously difficult; (3) to provide observations and glimpses, as one might find in a journal, of Waldron's personal "walk" with the poet -- of the events that are occurring in our day, as Waldron delves into the opus of the Jesuit genius.

In detailing the life of Hopkins, Waldron does not shrink from mentioning what most biographers have acknowledged: the homosexual orientation of the celibate priest. It is only the reader whose orthodoxy is more brittle than secure who would be scandalized by this aspect of Hopkins' life. There is the very deep affection that Hopkins felt for a gentleman named Digby Augustus Stewart Mackworth Dolben, lamentably drowned at a young age, saving another man's life. (Waldron makes the convincing case that the image in a late sonnet of "dead letters sent/ To dearest him who lives, alas! away" not only refers to unanswered prayers, but also carries the poet's memory of letters written to Dolben, which never received a reply.)

Waldron also gives us a clear picture of the role that Blessed John Henry Newman played in Hopkins' brave decision to convert to the Church of Rome (brave because, in the England of Hopkins' day, there was much prejudice against Catholics and Catholicism). It is Newman's example and calmly sagacious counsel, among other factors, that convinced Hopkins to make a step that would estrange him somewhat from the larger society.

Of paramount importance, Waldron explores the poetry, and he does so magnificently. It is in his treatment of the "Terrible Sonnets," as they are called, that Waldron is at his strongest. Here, we see the pedagogical agility of the veteran teacher -- and not only agility, but ability to communicate. When Waldron gives us the many shades of meaning in phrases such as "feel the fell of dark" or "Pitched past pitch of grief," we know that Hopkins is lucky to have a reader such as Robert Waldron, whose teacherly experience of three decades' length reveals itself in an enticingly wise explication of these great poems. Waldron also ventures to guess (correctly, this reviewer affirms) that Hopkins' sonnets of desolation and near-despair will help the reader who finds himself crying, "I can no more."

One of the most interesting of the genre

There was a cottage industry of books of black folklore collections that were usually written by white writers in the 1920s. Some of these have endured, such as DuBose Heyward's "Porgy," but most are forgotten today.

John B. Sale's "The Tree Named John" is an interesting addition to this canon. Sale, who hailed from Columbus, Miss., was acquainted with Dr. Howard Odum (author of the "Black Ulysses" folklore novels of the tall tales of a black North Carolinian "Left Wing" Gordon). Sale's "Tree Named John" is based on his chilhood episodes at a Mississippi plantation and its black sharecroppers including "Aunt Betsey," who becomes his surrogate mother and "Uncle Alford," who regales him with Brer Rabbit stories.

The modern reader may cringe at the dialect (while not as rough as Joel Chandler Harris' Uncle Remus tales, it still requires patience for the modern reader), superstition, and patronizing treatment of the black characters. Whiile typical of its times, this collection adds a few interesting nuances to such matters. "Aunt Betsey," while illiterate and very superstitious, has a folk intelligence all her own and is no one -dimensional "mammy." In fact, her concern for her own children and family is vividly shown, unlike most books of this type. The relationship with the plantation blacks and "John" (presumably the author as a boy) is fairly historically accurate in the manner of which Southern white children were often initiated into black culture as children (the book does not mention how these attitudes often changed as the children reached adulthood, but the stories are the thing here-not sociology), but there is a fascinating scene where the now-educated John corrects Aunt Betsey's English and...you'll see what happens!

The tales make for good reading. They give interesting and amusing insight into John's views of Aunt Betsey and her culture from a child's perspective and a few sections are merely anecdotes from John's childhood. While the view of the blacks' lives is largely pastural, there is a story called "Ghoses" (Ghosts) which is a harrowing tale told by an older ex-slave about a brutal slave master who becames the victim of supernatual revenge. This unsentimal view of slavery was atypical of books of this kind. The story that explains the book's title is rather touching in its own way, and the final chapter, which I will not explain here, is equally moving.

Overall, if you have the patience to slog through the dialect, this is a good read for folklore fans and is one of the best of its kind.

This book is a "must read", in order to truly understand the cruel, but truthful history of the development of Baltimore and it's prejudices and social ills. It has been said that "one must know where you have been in order to know where you are going." Public health, government ignorance and the perseverance of a race of people are all reflected in this book. Read It.

I was VERY disappointed in this book

I thought this book would be about the Carolinas - as the title implies. But it is about the geology of state parks in North Carolina with a couple of locations in South Carolina thrown in. No mention of the different mineral locations or other areas of geologic interest - JUST state parks. I was VERY disappointed in this book.

Magnificent Work

This is a magnificent book. I had given up hope finding a good reference work for North Carolina geology and then stumbled upon this book. I highly recommend it for its general discussion of Carolina geological history and its guided tours of specific locations. I'm baffled by the other low review it received.

Not to my liking but others may like this book

I was hoping this book would be similar to the Roadside Geology series. It is far from it. Being very familiar with geology this book is good for someone who has little knowledge of geology. It does explain the building forces of the area it covers and I'm sure many will find it interesting. If you want a very broad knowledge with little details, this would make a good read IF you are in the few areas it covers. Unless you are going to do the "field trip" areas I would not recommend this book for someone just driving around the state and wanting detailed information about what they are seeing as the drive through road cuts and other geologic features in the area they are immediately within. I gave it 2 stars for it's coverage of the Carolina's on a too sporadic basis. Those of you familiar with the Roadside Geology series will know what I mean, this is NOT that book.
