A helpful primer on Hebrew law

I liked this book because it really helped to get me up-to-speed on the location and contents of the major legal collections in the Pentateuch. Though some of Doorly's biases come through, he presents a mostly balanced approach to different issues that arise with studies of the Pentateuch's legal collections. It is a quick read because, as the subtitle says, the book is actually a "handbook". It contains many helpful charts and lists, including a list of 613 laws of rabbinical tradition that is very valuable. The chapter on the administration of justice in ancient Israel provides a great resource when reading the history books in the Bible. This handbook is a quick reference guide if you are studying Ancient Near East or Hebrew laws or are just interested in learning more about them.

Simultaneously helpful & disappointing

This book is helpful in that it is well-organized, systematic, easy-to-read and chock full of lists (39pp) [which the author calls "indexes"] and 27 charts. At the same time, it's a disappointment in that it is based totally on the JEPD theory understanding of the OT's development and so, dismisses outright much of the OT as unhistorical. Example: "The references to the reading of the law by Josiah and Ezra are historical. The references to Moses and Joshua are theological projections into Israel's re-created past." (p.134)

I bought this book to use as a resource as I taught a Bible class series on the commands of the OT Law. The lists ("indexes") and some quotes (statistics, etc.) have been a real aid, but I'm still searching for a listing of the OT Law that: (a) groups the laws by subject/topic (worship, justice, the land, etc.), not by Biblical book or supposed "authors" (JEPD) and (b) takes the historical record of the Bible seriously.

Thin but handy

Doorly is small, but makes for a useful little synthesis of data on the law codes of the Pentateuch. I bought it, anyhow, only because of Baruch Halpern's acclaim for it and it rose above my expectations. As one reviewer pointed out there is a presupposition of JEDP, but only a presupposition. This is not about dividing up the literary sources of the Pentateuch according to this theory, but the specific collections of law in the Pentateuch and their setting in the history of Israel. A lot of the book is indexes and charts, but the articles are neat and nice and to the point. Pretty fair and balanced too.

An extraordinary book!

This is one of the most important Jewish books I have ever encountered. Arthur Green has done a great service by translating Hillel Zeitlin's profound writings and by finally allowing the English reader to encounter Zeitlin's brilliant, deeply honest religious thinking.

A "Must"

This diverse collection of translations from a brilliant poetic soul, who stood at the crossroads of Hasidic mysticism and modernity, addresses just about all of the key issues of concern to contemporary students trying to integrate the diverse spiritual forces that impact our lives and way of thinking. Hillel Zeitlin -- in his own way, like Rav Kook and later Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel -- came from a devout home, was exposed to the Haskalah in full force during his youth, but eventually created within himself and via his incisive, impassioned writings a bridge between worlds in which the true spirit of the Chassidic masters could be transmitted. And this at a time when that spirit was beginning to dissipate in the religious communities of Eastern Europe. The style of translation is clear and literary, not "academese," but the annotation and informative introductions will satisfy the scholar as well. Dr. Green gave this collection the title "Hasidic Spirituality for a New Era" -- one of his lifelong pursuits -- and that's just what it is. Some highlights are Zeitlin's imaginary interview with the Baal Shem Tov; "Fundaments of Hasidism," his lucid encapsulation of early Hasidic mystical doctrine, which remains unmatched until today; profound reflections on "Judaism and Universal Religion" (in response to William James); and a group of prayer-poems, several inspired by Rabbi Nathan of Bratslav's Likutey Tefillot, translated by another Judaica scholar with a fine literary gift, Joel Rosenberg. Plus the physical book is an aesthetic pleasure (not least of all the wild-looking cover photo).

Awe Inspiring

The book is simply transcendent. Zeitlin is shown to be both a product of his unique time and a mystic capable of transcending time. Green's translation, as always, is skillful and on the mark. Green causes Zeitlin's lips to move from the grave and will surely cause him to be remembered as one of the great modern Chasidic thinkers of the 20th century.

There are no ticker-tape parades for journalists returning from war

One thing that could be as ugly as war is telling the truth about it, at least to people who don't want to know. Reading journalist Ted Rall's 2014 book AFTER WE KILL YOU, WE WILL WELCOME YOU BACK AS HONORED GUESTS: UNEMBEDDED IN AFGHANISTAN, you may realize why too many Americans do not appreciate reporters such as Rall, who dare to tell the public of the futility of invasion and occupation. As this book recounts, it takes twelve years for reality to move support for the United States war against Afghanistan from 88 to 17 percent. Shouldn't Rall and the too few others who reported the facts all those years be among the honored at a homecoming parade? They were out front with the correct information, waiting for everyone else to catch up. Yet, I don't hear journalists who were embedded with the troops in Afghanistan saying, "We should not have let our reports be censored by the military and U.S. government. The independent reporters got it right long before we did." How many American citizens who fell for the "winning hearts and minds" baloney now know the only hearts and minds that mattered to those bombing innocent Afghans were American, thanks to the dogged pursuit of the truth by the likes of Rall? When you finally get people to accept the ugly truth, they ought to thank you.

Tired of the "official" version?

I had to read it, just because I loved the title. But I stayed for the story. If you're tired of the "official" version of the Afghanistan occupation as regurgitated by cooperative media types, this book is for you. It's a little depressing to realize, from Rall's conversations with ordinary Afghans, how much more of a difference we could have made in this undeveloped countries, and didn't. Good read, recommended.

The author Ted Rall notes the war against Afghanistan has led to tens if not hundreds of thousands of Afghan deaths. The book observes that the more the U.S. attacks and kills civilians, the stronger recruitment is for anti-American fighters.

In 2001, the Islamic State of Afghanistan , aka United Front or Northern Alliance, was the government recognized by the United Nations. It held about 10% of Afghanistan, Most of the country was controlled by the Taliban. The Taliban was funded by Pakistani Intelligence which itself was financed and trained by the CIA.

Union Oil of California (Unicol) sought to construct a pipeline through Afghanistan that would deliver an estimated 9 to 16 billion barrels of oil. In 1997, the Taliban and Unicol could not agree on what the transit fee should be. In 2001, the Bush Administration provided $43 million to the Taliban to destroy poppy fields. The Taliban and Unicol continued their disagreement on what pipeline transit fees should be.

After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the U.S. began attacking the Taliban. 14,00 tons of bombs were dropped on Afghanistan by 2009.

U.S. Special Forces and Northern Alliance forces captured 7,500 prisoners and massacred them.

The U.S. helped install Hamid Karzai as Afghan President. His authority is mostly limited to the city of Kabul.

The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) of the United Nations, half of whose soldiers are from the U.S., entered Afghanistan in 2002. ISAF was supposed to rebuild Afghanistan. Yet little has been build despite several billions of U.S. funds being spent. Whatever the money was spent on is not publicly known.

President Obama sent 33,000 extra troops to Afghanistan in hopes of turning the government over to Kurzai. General Stanley McChrystal stated the Taliban was winning. Wikileaks showed Karzai’s army was ineffective. Wikileaks also showed Pakistan was supporting the neo-Taliban even though the U,S. supported Pakistan.

NATO in 2001 to 2005 paved some highways and built some schools. Afghans may generally have not been satisfied with these efforts as they expected much more.

Rall writes of reporting in Afghanistan in 2001 as “you can’t get the truth, But you can get an impression.”

Local Afghans lose every fight with U.S, troops. Yet they are winning because of civilian deaths which creates more people who join the neo-Taliban for revenge, They fight guerrilla style and they choose when they wish to fight.

Rall observes that neo-Taliban “understand the simple truth: the live there, and we don’t. Time is on their side.”

Rall nots since World War II “when the United States invades, it often fails to occupy, much less annex. When it occupied it does so with fewer soldiers than necessary to control its newly occupied territory.”

Afghan roads deteriorate rapidly due to heavy military vehicles, The U.S. Agency for International Development estimates it costs about $200 million per year to maintain these roads. The Afghan annual federal budget is $7 billion.

Rall visited Afghan cities where foreigners never visit. He found all women wear burqas, in contrast to U.S. news reports. Bribes are common and expected. There is a city with no mail delivery and no street addresses. U.S. carpet bombing has caused much destruction in many cities. The Taliban usually attack at night. There are Taliban biker gangs. The biker gangs could easily be destroyed but they are not. U.S. and NATO efforts are not designed to provide security for the Afghan people.

The Afghan central government governs Kabul and to some degree Mazar-i-Sharif, Herat, and to an even less extent Kandahar. The Taliban controls the rest of the country.

The National Police are corrupt and ineffective.

Afghanistan is the longest lasting U.S. war. It costs a million dollars annually for one soldier to be there. Rall concludes “invading other countries, whether to steal their land or poach their natural resources or pressure their neighbors or exert regional influence is an enterprise with a cost-to-benefit ratio that simply doesn’t work.”

Reflections on the rise of America's Game

This is really a fascinating and well written book. Oriard looks at every angle in deconstructing how and why football became America's Game by 1960. Great illustrations accompany very readable text. It's a social history as much as a football history, but it speaks volumes about the sporting heritage of America and how race, class, and ethnicity are reflected in the game - and indeed how the game has forced us to confront some of the less savory facets of American society, particularly race. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of football and American popular culture.

The Gullah people of the Sea Islands of South Carolina have preserved ways of life and speech from West African slave culture and plantation times. Robinson, a native of Daufuskie, one of the islands, writes that "most of our food came from the land-and water-around our tin-roofed home." This book honors a love of her childhood and her family, and that love is intertwined with food. Introducing most recipes are reminiscences of loading the wood stove, trips to the store, fishing for sheepshead, washing clothes on a washboard and cooking "long pots" (slow-cooked meals). Beautiful photos of island life and a relaxed attitude toward cooking ("these are recipes, not rules") make for accessible additions to anyone's Southern repertoire, with homespun dishes like Tada Salad, Sea Island Okra Gumbo and Fuskie Crab Patties. Bring the Gullah Culture to My Kitchen

My trip inspired me to want to learn southern cooking. I previously purchased a Gullah cookbook when I visited the Gullah Festival in Beaufort, SC, and when I returned, my neighbor showed me her copy of Gullah Home Cooking the Daufuskie Way. I read the introduction by Pat Conroy who was the teacher who went to Daufuskie to teach the island children and the author of this cookbook was one of his students. I'm still learning to cook the Defuskie Way, but will try more of the recipes. Good book for those who like to try new recipes for old favorites. Please see my review for The Water is Wide.

A forceful, courageous voice for black freedom, Ruggles mentored Douglass, Sojourner Truth, and William Cooper Nell in the skills of antislavery activism. As a founder of the New York Committee of Vigilance, he advocated a "practical abolitionism" that included civil disobedience and self-defense in order to preserve the rights of self-emancipated enslaved people and to protect free blacks from kidnappers who would sell them into slavery in the South.

Hodges's narrative places Ruggles in the fractious politics and society of New York, where he moved among the highest ranks of state leaders and spoke up for common black New Yorkers. His work on the Committee of Vigilance inspired many upstate New York and New England whites, who allied with him to form a network that became the Underground Railroad.

Hodges's portrait of David Ruggles establishes the abolitionist as an essential link between disparate groups--male and female, black and white, clerical and secular, elite and rank-and-file--recasting the history of antebellum abolitionism as a more integrated and cohesive movement than is often portrayed.

Hodges's portrait of Ruggles establishes the abolitionist as an essential link between disparate groups--male and female, black and white, clerical and secular, elite and rank-and-file--recasting the history of antebellum abolitionism as a more integrated and cohesive movement than is often portrayed.

A Very Brave Man

The Author of this book does a nice job telling the story of a great but largely forgotten man.This could not have been an easy book to write.David Ruggles was a very brave man whose story needed to be told and it is an interesting book indeed.Graham Russell Hodges does a clever job writng this tale,pieced together from many different sources.He puts together a narrative of what it was like in New York and the surrounding areas in the days of the abolitionist movement and the underground railroad.He tells how one man dedicated his life to help others,often at his own risk.He brings you back to a time in New York where black men were kidnapped and brought south to be sold into slavery.David Ruggles would fight the oppressors and he had much success.Read the book.

Tells a Different Side of the Civil War

This is the book you want to read after watching the movie Twelve Years a Slave, because David Ruggles was the reason that Solomon Northrop escaped slavery. Ruggles organized the first ever "vigilance committee" in New York to protect African Americans from being kidnapped and sold into slavery. This committee of men ready to forcibly interfere with kidnappers stopped as many abductions as they could and succeeded in passing a state law in New York to rescue the victims that did get tricked into a kidnapping like Northrop. The law required the Governor of NY to personally be responsible for rescuing victims, which he did for Northrop after Northrop was able to get the letter to his family of where he was. Anyway, this is an amazing story of a Christian abolitionist who personally assisted several hundred fugitive slaves to escape, boldly protected the free blacks from kidnapping, and mentored other civil rights leaders like Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth and William Nell.
