The tremendous growth of the permanent order of deacon in the Church carries with it lingering questions about women deacons. The Church s evident need for more women in ministry demands careful exploration and evaluation of the historical roots, contemporary ecclesial realities, and creative future possibilities for including women in the diaconate. In these three essays, originally written for this volume, Professors Macy, Ditewig and Zagano evaluate the question of women deacons from the historical, contemporary, and future perspectives in conversation with one another and with the whole Church. The result is essential reading for anyone interested in the nature and exercise of diaconate in the contemporary Catholic Church..

What problem is being solved?
By J.E.Metzler
While I wasn't surprised to learn that history is on the side of women being deacons in the Roman catholic church, the book is weak in taking non-religious sources, e.g. psychological insights on the differences between the sexes; experience in education of men and women, co-ed and separate; results of the greater role of women in the medical and legal professions; polls showing the decline the overall happiness of women in the U.S.; etc to project out meanings on the role of deacons who happen to be of the female gender, and consequences. Is the U.S. becoming an androgynous society? In my book club, this book served as the kindling for the bonfires of discussion, mostly based on the real experiences of men and women.

What a Waste!
By Melekali
Let's be clear, each chapter was written independently of the others, so a good review of this book ought to address each chapter separately. My real interest is in the early fathers so I bought the book primarily to read the first chapter.
Gary Macy is Adjunct Faculty and his chapter is woefully inadequate to treat his subject matter. The book is extremely small in size and he only writes about 35 pages. In those pages, he provides many quotations, but he makes no attempt to evaluate the quotes. Rather, he seems content with providing surface comments and there is absolutely no depth to any of his comments. I mean that without exception. He does a gloss where he seems to presume the quotes speak for themselves, yet pick up any serious study of the quotes and you will get an evaluation and educated opinion. I felt like I got nothing from it. He provides quotes that appear on the surface to support that women should be Deacons, but does no evaluation or heavy lifting at all. This is in contrast to real scholarship like "Priesthood and Diaconate: The Recipient of the Sacrament of Holy Orders from the Perspective of Creation Theology and Christology." There is a small section, about 5-6 pages on the Diaconate in this work, yet the pages are large and the printing is small, so this book takes up nearly as much if not more space as Macy's treatment. Yet both treatments are completely different. Muller goes in depth and provides his opinion based on an evaluation of the quotations. Macy provides lots of quotes with nothing of value in his comments, and they really are only comments - there is no attempt at any turn to evaluate ANY of the quotes,
Deacon Bill Ditewig merely evaluates where we are now, as the writing of the book.
Phyllis Zagano is pure fluff and dreams. She is writing about the future, presuming there can be women Deacons (like men Deacons have existed for 2000 years). Hence, with the setup of the extremely surface and poor treatment of the early quotes without substance, the reader is setup to think we ought to have women Deacons ordained just like men. Yet as Muller examines and explains in depth in his work, this would be a novel difference from the past in which women were never ordained as were men and never had the role Deacons have. Hence, perhaps this third writer gets a raw deal - but she writes independently of Macy, so I presume she actually has done no real study on the issue.
Hence, for me the book was an extreme disappointment. It also shows me the Deacon who suggested I read it has not done ANY study on the issue and is satisfied with this pathetic surface treatment, particularly in the first chapter, that leaves the heavy lifting of quoting and evaluating in any critical way to other, far more qualified writers.

Gary Macy gives the history of Women Deacons as clearly ...
By Carmel Ann Sperti
Gary Macy gives the history of Women Deacons as clearly and compellingly as he gave us the history of Eucharist in THE BANQUET'S WISDOM. This book is accessible reading for non-theologians and explains the roles of women Deacons in the past and what their roles might be in the future. His application of current canon law to questions of age of ordination, celibacy and other issues is clear and understandable. Any student of liturgical history and all those interested in the future of the permanent Diaconate will benefit from this book.
