The Anti-Semitic Moment: A Tour of France in 1898, by Pierre Birnbaum

A controversial new look at a turning point in modern European history

In 1898, the Dreyfus Affair plunged French society into a year-long frenzy. In small villages and big cities, angry crowds paraded through the streets, attacking Jews and destroying Jewish-owned businesses. Anger about the imagined power of Jewish capital as well as fears of treason and racial degeneration made anti-Semitism a convenient banner behind which many social and political factions could fall in line. The anti-Semitic feelings that had been simmering in France for decades came boiling to the surface.

Until now, the details of this pogrom have slumbered in local archives, but here Pierre Birnbaum, the first to study the full range of events set in motion during the Dreyfus crisis, guides the reader on a tour of France during this tumultuous year. His innovative study makes it clear why, though prolonged violence threatened to topple the government, the institution of the state did not give way. Birnbaum shows not only that many Jews defended themselves but that police officers made mass arrests and Jewish lives and property were protected. His analysis of how and why public order was maintained offers surprising new insights.

From Publishers Weekly
"The Yids and their accomplices are wallowing in the mud, the filth, the torrent of shit they have unleashed," wrote Edouard Drumont, editor of La Libre Parole, in 1898, at the height of the Dreyfus affair. It was by far the major political event in France at the time; a nationwide anti-Semitic response was triggered when the Jewish Capt. Alfred Dreyfus was accused of treason. Emile Zola's famous J'accuse-a defense of Dreyfus-triggered even more anti-Semitic sentiment. Birnbaum, a professor of politics and philosophy at the Sorbonne, substantially broadens the scope of historical inquiry into the Dreyfus affair and raises vital questions. He has uncovered new materials showing that, as the controversy grew, many French cities and towns seethed with near-riots and pogroms: in Paris, 2,000 students and artists swarmed the streets and shouted, "Death to the Jews"; in Moulins, a Monsignor Dubourg led a rally that condemned "the sinister race of the stateless." What is more startling is that the police and government officials, many harboring anti-Semitic sentiments, "came forward as defenders of the rights for all citizens" and arrested protesters, rabble-rousers and agitators, thus preventing what might have become widespread murderous violence. Birnbaum's research breaks new ground, although at times the narrative is confusing and repetitious, and he does not explore as much as he might why these rabid forces of anti-Semitism were stopped by the authorities. Still, this is an important addition to the literatures of anti-Semitism and French history.

From Library Journal
This is an impressive example of "microhistory" that should be welcomed by specialists in French history and politics. Birnbaum (politics and philosophy, Sorbonne), a prolific authority on French Jewry, documents a sensational episode in French history-the ferocious wave of anti-Semitism that gripped the nation in the wake of the Dreyfus affair. Drawing exhaustively from local archives, Birnbaum breaks new ground in re-creating the hysteria of the time-the demonstrations, parades, speeches, songs, press accounts, and other diatribes that rocked the French body politic in the seminal year of 1898 over the treason trial of a Jewish officer, Capt. Alfred Dreyfus. The author, whose rich examples include evidence from all over France, concludes that demonstrations in large cities and little towns probably attracted hundreds of thousands of people and represented a new kind of popular politicization. This timely and disturbing study raises critical issues of interest to scholars of French history and politics: how anti-Semitism intersected with reactionary politics and the diverse ideological passions of the time, how French Jews reacted and defended themselves, and how the forces of order nonetheless prevailed. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

From Booklist
Birnbaum, a professor at the Sorbonne, has written several books on French history, many of which deal with the history and plight of French Jews. He focuses once again on that microcosm, this time specifically on the year 1898, what he terms "the anti-Semitism moment" in France. This was, of course, the year of the Dreyfuss affair--in many ways, a precursor of the anti-Semitism that would run rampant throughout Europe only two generations later. Birnbaum utilizes the "ground up" historical technique, delving into local and national archives to show the extent of the pogromlike activities against the Jews. However, his extensive research documents a government and its police forces that went out of their way to ensure the protection of the Jews. This book is bound to raise eyebrows, because it runs counter to the only other study of its kind--Stephen Wilson's Ideology and Experience: Anti-Semitism in France at the Time of the Dreyfuss Affair (1982), which relied heavily on slanted centralized archives and inferred a government complicity in anti-Semitic activities. New Testament Interpretation Through Rhetorical Criticism (Studies in Religion), by George A. Kennedy

New Testament Interpretation through Rhetorical Criticism provides readers of the Bible with an important tool for understanding the Scriptures. Based on the theory and practice of Greek rhetoric in the New Testament, George Kennedy's approach acknowledges that New Testament writers wrote to persuade an audience of the truth of their messages. These writers employed rhetorical conventions that were widely known and imitated in the society of the times. Sometimes confirming but often challenging common interpretations of texts, this is the first systematic study of the rhetorical composition of the New Testament.

As a complement to form criticism, historical criticism, and other methods of biblical analysis, rhetorical criticism focuses on the text as we have it and seeks to discover the basis of its powerful appeal and the intent of its authors. Kennedy shows that biblical writers employed both "external" modes of persuasion, such as scriptural authority, the evidence of miracles, and the testimony of witnesses, and "internal" methods, such as ethos (authority and character of the speaker), pathos (emotional appeal to the audience), and logos (deductive and inductive argument in the text).

In the opening chapter Kennedy presents a survey of how rhetoric was taught in the New Testament period and outlines a rigorous method of rhetorical criticism that involves a series of steps. He provides in succeeding chapters examples of rhetorical analysis, looking closely at the Sermon on the Mount, the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus' farewell to the disciples in John's Gospel, the distinctive rhetoric of Jesus, the speeches in Acts, and the approach of Saint Paul in Second Corinthians, Thessalonians, Galatians, and Romans.

Review
We have seen a growing interest in ancient rhetoric as one context for the comparative study of the New Testament, but up until now there has been no general introduction to this kind of analysis. George Kennedy's book is therefore sure to find an eager audience, especially because of his acknowledged stature as one of the leading scholars of classical rhetoric.--Wayne A. Meeks, Yale University

It's all Greek

Mostly of academic interest. For the average Bible reader it is enough to know that many New Testament writers were probably aware of Greek rhetorical styles and may have used them in writing the New Testament.

A must book for any NT scholar
By Martin W. Eldred
Few books have changed my thinking on any one particular subject as has this volume by Kennedy. I was trained in New Testament academics heavy on the German, largely Lutheran, "higher critical" method. While this methodology has strengths, it is based largely on the study of the written text as a literary document. That is all well and good, but Kennedy reminds us that these were most likely oral documents, transcriptions, if you will, of texts that were intended to be heard by the audiences to which they were written.
In other words, although the letters of the Apostle Paul were in fact written down and sent to the various congregations to which they are addressed, they were most likely experienced by that vast majority of people there as something that was read to them and not as something that they read. This oral presentation was based on a number of factors that we forget in the post-Guttenberg (printing press) era: The first century was an oral culture. Many people could not read, but even those who could expected to listen to texts as much as read them. Rhetoric, the art of oral persuasion, was held as the highest demonstration of a well-educated man (it was also a man's world).
Thus, to communicate within the framework of the Greco-Roman world, Kennedy maintains, Paul wrote rhetorically, with the intention that it would be listened to, like a sermon. Even the Gospels were written in this fashion, as long stories of Jesus to be heard in in one sitting among the communities of faith.
Studying the New Testament from a purely literary framework, therefore, without "listening" to the text as rhetoric, misses much of what the first century audiences would have know and appreciated. This book opened a whole new world for me, when I first read it over fifteen years ago as a well-trained student in the New Testament. Since then, I have deepened by appreciation for Kennedy's methodology and incorporated much of what I have learned in my own investigations.
If you a a studentof the New Testament, this book will invite to see a whole new way of thinking and, more importantly, of "hearing." Enjoy!

Great Foundational Book
By Suzanne Miller aka Laughing Scholar
If you're doing work in NT and are doing anything with Rhetoric, this is your basic, foundational book. As an OT doctoral student, I found this particularly helpful when trying to navigate rhetorical criticism in NT texts (since rhetorical criticism is different in OT and NT). Easy read and helpful shelf reference.

Combining innovative archaeological analysis with historical research, Peter E. Pope examines the way of life that developed in seventeenth-century Newfoundland, where settlement was sustained by seasonal migration to North America's oldest industry, the cod fishery. The unregulated English settlements that grew up around the exchange of fish for wine served the fishery by catering to nascent consumer demand. The English Shore became a hub of transatlantic trade, linking Newfoundland with the Chesapeake, New and old England, southern Europe, and the Atlantic islands. Pope gives special attention to Ferryland, the proprietary colony founded by Sir George Calvert, Lord Baltimore, in 1621, but later taken over by the London merchant Sir David Kirke and his remarkable family. The saga of the Kirkes provides a narrative line connecting social and economic developments on the English Shore with metropolitan merchants, proprietary rivalries, and international competition. Employing a rich variety of evidence to place the fisheries in the context of transatlantic commerce, Pope makes Newfoundland a fresh point of view for understanding the demographic, economic, and cultural history of the expanding North Atlantic world.

Read a 450-page book on the growth of the Newfoundland fisheries? Yes! In this fascinating and impeccably researched tale of the struggle to establish permanent settlements in that remote area, Peter Pope brings to light how red wine, a commodity not usually associated with the fruits of the sea, helped cod become one of the stars of the Atlantic world.--Carole Shammas, University of Southern California

From the Inside Flap
In Newfoundland, colonists in fishing plantations exchanged fish for the luxury goods of wine and tobacco creating a commercial web between the New England coast, the North Atlantic, and the Mediterranean. Pope, an historical archaeologist, excavates the life of this colony where migratory European crews had fished for cod since the 1500s. It is also the story of the remarkable Kirke family who took over and continued to operate the largest fishing establishments in Newfoundland until 1696.

An Excellent Work in Newfoundland History
By William Skulmoski
Peter Pope writes an excellent account of the Newfoundland Plantation in the seventeenth century. Notably, he details the prominent position that the island held in the trans-Atlantic trade during the same period. It's a wonderful and thorough revisionist account that shifts some focus from the more traditional and well documented trading centres of North America. Overall, a stellar analysis of Early Modern Newfoundland!

Ambiguous Discourse: Feminist Narratology and British Women WritersFrom Brand: The University of North Carolina Press

Carefully melding theory with close readings of texts, the contributors to Ambiguous Discourse explore the role of gender in the struggle for narrative control of specific works by British writers Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, Anita Brookner, Angela Carter, Jeanette Winterson, and Mina Loy. This collection of twelve essays is the first book devoted to feminist narratology--the combination of feminist theory with the study of the structures that underpin all narratives. Until recently, narratology has resisted the advances of feminism in part, as some contributors argue, because theory has replicated past assumptions of male authority and point of view in narrative. Feminist narratology, however, contextualizes the cultural constructions of gender within its study of narrative strategies. Nine of these essays are original, and three have been revised for publication in this volume. The contributors are Melba Cuddy-Keane, Denise Delorey, Rachel Blau DuPlessis, Susan Stanford Friedman, Janet Giltrow, Linda Hutcheon, Susan S. Lanser, Alison Lee, Patricia Matson, Kathy Mezei, Christine Roulston, and Robyn Warhol.

Review
An important and original collection, this book clarifies the range of reading strategies that feminist narratology encompasses, and it demonstrates, often with brilliance, the richness and variety of the literary studies that these approaches can produce.--Margaret Homans, Yale University

Feminist Narratology for a Target Audience
By Kathleen McColley
This is a well-written and highly regarded scholarly book of collected essays by well-known feminist scholars who treat in some fashion feminist narratology. It is directed toward those who are interested in pursuing literary criticism through the lens of feminist narratology.
In her introduction, editor Kathy Mezei attempts to define this rather problematic term, "feminist narratology." She relies on Robyn Warhol's definition as "the study of narrative structures and strategies in the context of cultural construction of gender." The problem women writers had in the 18th and 19th centuries (texts range from Jane Austen to Virginia Woolf) was that there were no sentences or paradigms readily available for them to use. Writing was male dominated, and in relating a narrative, alternative strategies were ingeniously developed by these female authors. For example, Jane Austen relies on irony and the "gaze" while Woolf relys on the decentered and peripheral narrator.
Essentially, there are two differing schools of thought concerning the critical application of feminist narratology to texts. Feminist narratology is a fairly recent hybrid construction; an alliance of feminism and narratolgy. Susan Lanser (1986)takes a more flexible approach in which she examines the role of gender (feminist criticism) in and through the construction of narrative theory. On the other side, Nelli Diengott focuses more on the scientific application of this type of criticism within a narrative system, strictly using these narratological terms to explore feminist texts and the way in which they function, thereby highlighting structure as opposed to feminist interpretation. The debate continues, and the collection of essays in this book range unhampered on both sides.
A number of women's texts are treated in this collection, and include works by Jane Austen, Virginia Woolf, Mina Loy, Anita Brookner, and Angela Carter. One of the best essays which follows a strict narratological interpretation and close usage of terms is Robyn Warhol's essay on Austen's _Persuasion_. In this essay, Warhol attributes the heroine, Anne Elliot, with power beyond that of the traditionally masculine, held either by male narrators or characters. As a focalizer (one through whom perspective becomes filtered), Anne Elliot is empowered with the "gaze" or "look" that allows her to operate extradiegetically and intradiagetically (ouside and inside of the story)with the power to "read" bodies which in turn translates the perspective of other characters. The power of this look is gendered as specifically feminine, and is crucial to understanding Austen's textual subversion of masculinity. Warhol makes a solid argument that interprets Austen through a strict feminist narratological lens.
A number of other essays focus on the different narrative strategies that Virginia Woolf uses in her works, such as _Jacob's Room_, _Mrs. Dalloway_, _The Voyage Out_, and _A Room of One's Own_. Woolf's texts offer fertile ground for feminist narratological interpretations, though most scholars here take liberties in interpretations more along the lines of Lanser.
If you are interested in reading or writing through the theoretical lens of feminist narratology, this book is a must.

Profound things come in small packages.
By Kerry Sullivan
This little book is remarkable. I spent a month with it. It is a compact, scholarly, and informative introduction to a very important and complex subject. Father Brown apologizes neither for his faith nor for the generally unblinking, critical scholarship he applies to to his subject. This book is a treasure for Christians who seek to love the Lord their God with all their minds.

Excellent Resource for Theological Studies. Condition of the book that I bought was slightly overstated by the seller. However for the price it was acceptable.

Of Great Value
By Mike DePue, OFS
When Father Brown died (too soon!) in 1998 at the age of 70, his NY Times obituary appreciatively noted that his "scholarly career spanned four decades... [and that he was] the author of nearly 40 books, many of them commentaries on the New Testament... In the contentious field of biblical studies, which ranges from biblical literalists to those who have tried to strip down the New Testament texts to seek out a historical figure of Jesus, Father Brown was regarded as a centrist, with a reputation as a man of the church and a rigorous, exacting scholar whose work had to be reckoned with."

The book under review, written several years, before his death, displays his customary clarity and execution of purpose. And his purpose is straightforward. "Christian believers..., if they have not wrestled in some mature way with the identity of Jesus, are in danger of constructing a fictional Jesus and attempting to get guidance from him... They should be offered the opportunity to see that a nonliteral approach to the NT does not necessarily destroy or undermine classic Christian beliefs." (p. vi)

Pope Francis has said: "I don't have all the answers. I don't even have all the questions. I always think of new questions, and there are always new questions coming forward." Father Brown raises many of the important 20th-century Christological questions and supplies well-thought-out and pellucid answers. For instance: "How then can one be divine and human at the same time?" (p. 25) The astute answer: "Realistically, it may well be that most Christians tolerate [that word is emphasized in the original] only as much humanity as they deem consonant with their view of the divinity... There are believers,,, [who] cannot visualize [Jesus] as sometimes tired, testy, indistinguishable in a crowd, treated as a fanatic and a rabble-rouser." (p. 27) So where does one go with questions about what Jesus as a human knew and when and to what degree he knew it? Father Brown sums up the matter: "Actually the theological climate has changed and very prominent Roman Catholic theologians [including Joseph Ratzinger] now allow for limitations in Jesus' knowledge." (p. 29)

Ronald Witherup was provincial of the Society of St. Sulpice, a fellowship of priests who teach in seminaries, of which Father Brown was a member. His assessment, which follows, remains true today and is likely to stand for some time. "His impact is still going to be widely felt, but his presence will be missed." Father Brown's reputation is cemented as a premier figure of 20th-century Scriptural scholarship.

Exploring Kenotic Christology: The Self-Emptying of God This book is vital to the debate about creationism or intelligent design vs. the big bang or evolution as mere happenstance. Fr. Richard proposes that the Creator first emptied HImself and created nothingness from which He then created the universe. I hope someone will reprint it!

The Masterless: Self and Society in Modern America, by Wilfred M. McClay

In this provocative book, Wilfred McClay considers the long-standing tension between individualism and social cohesion in conceptions of American culture. Exploring ideas of unity and diversity as they have evolved since the Civil War, he illuminates the historical background to our ongoing search for social connectedness and sources of authority in a society increasingly dominated by the premises of individualism. McClay borrows D. H. Lawrence's term 'masterless men'--extending its meaning to women as well--and argues that it is expressive of both the promise and the peril inherent in the modern American social order.

Drawing upon a wide range of disciplines--including literature, sociology, political science, philosophy, psychology, and feminist theory--McClay identifies a competition between visions of dispersion on the one hand and coalescence on the other as modes of social organization. In addition, he employs intellectual biography to illuminate the intersection of these ideas with the personal experiences of the thinkers articulating them and shows how these shifting visions are manifestations of a more general ambivalence about the process of national integration and centralization that has characterized modern American economic, political, and cultural life.

Review
This extraordinary work of cultural history traces the changing fortunes of 'self' and 'society' in American life over a period of two centuries. . . . The prose is lapidary, yet accessible; the level of historical imagination complex, yet engaging to any lively mind. Splendid work!--Thomas L. Haskell, Rice University

A fascinating intellectual history.--America

This is a model of intelligent and intelligible cultural history from which any student of modern America will profit.--Australasian Journal of American Studies

[An] elegantly written and closely argued book. . . . More than a masterful work of historical recovery and interpretation, this study has important implications for contemporary political and cultural debates. By revealing the hidden connections between an antinomian individualism and the consolidation of the modern American state, McClay's learned book has much to teach us about how to master ourselves and our society.--Casey Nelson Blake, Indiana University

In this engaging survey of intellectual life since the Civil War, Wilfred M. McClay portrays Americans tossing and turning in their dreams--on one side conjuring up visions of the liberal isolato striking westward, while on the other yearning to cast off narrow egotism and fall into the loving arms of the nation.--Journal of Southern History

[A] fine study.--American Historical Review

Grand Review
By William S Jamison
Reading the description of the Grand Review - a two day parade of the army through Washington following the end of the Civil War - prompted me to wonder what it would be like if after the Iraq War we were to have the American forces march in review through Washington DC and how long it might take. Would anyone today be able to stand and watch the whole thing? The most poignant description was that of Seward recovering from his wounds in Lafayette Square honored by Sherman. (p 15) This statement (p 23) also struck me "War is the most powerful of all engines for fostering national self-consciousness, and the most reliable of all centralizing and unifying agents in human affairs." I considered this a major point since Professor McClay repeated it in a summary article besides the book, and reiterated it twice during the week while visiting UAA (for the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's birthday in 2009). It struck me that he wrote this after the Persian Gulf War but before the Iraq War, though it still clearly was a point of emphasis he makes today. It certainly gives one pause for reflection. Also interesting I found was McClay's treatment of Whitman. But the Grand Review becomes a ready analogy for the book as it marches an army of American intellectual history by us developing the paradox of individualism and the search for social connectedness.

A brilliant and nuanced discussion of the American character
By Cory Andrews
This is a simply splendid historical analysis of the ambivalences inherent in the American character. McClay frames the issues within a process he calls "consolidation," which is the bureacratization and rationalization of American economic and political life. McClay concludes (as did Tocqueville) that the seemingly oppositional tendencies of hyper-individualism and bland conformism are in fact mutually reinforcing, symbiotic sides of the same coin. McClay's writing is poetic, and his research is painstaking. A must read for anyone interested in American history.

Interesting and worth reading
By Karim Walker
Wilfred McClay is an amazing writer whose research and evidence shine through in this book. Thorough, detailed, and lively, The Masterless shows the similarities between individualism and conformity when the two are juxtaposed . In addition, McClay also shows us the meaning of individualism and conformity in this day and age. The Masterless is an appropiate title for this book because it is a reflection of the dichotomy (indeed, paradox) of the individual's role (or lack thereof) in everyday society.

From Library Journal
This excellent collection of essays gives us another chance to read Lawrence, whose work is endlessly rewarding. They make us envy those for whom she was a weekly columnist--readers of the Charlotte Observer , in which these pieces appeared between 1957 and 1971. The idea for this collection was born when her friend Bill Neal discovered some of these old newspapers. The essays are arranged by month, and an index provides a guide to specific plant information. Lawrence was a fine writer and horticulturist, and the books she published during her lifetime--her last being Gardens of Love ( LJ 5/15/87)--are already classics. This new collection of her work is welcome, indeed.

This collection is a treasure.--ALA Booklist

Elizabeth Lawrence is always inspiring; her writing not only conveys her love of gardening as she experiences it from day to day and month to month, but she draws on the wisdom of earlier botanists and gardeners to add spice to her interpretations. I am grateful to her for so much guidance both in the joy of gardening and more practical matters.--Penelope Hobhouse, author of Garden Style

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme
By Dianne Foster
Miss Lawrence says, "Dill is a hardy annual. The seeds can be sown in fall or early spring. The seedlings must be thinned, and Mrs. Clarkson says she saves every scrap that is pulled up. She uses them in potato salad, and sprinkles them over broiled lamb."
Miss Lawrence has distilled much of her gardening and some of her cooking knowledge into this lovely little book (about 250 pages). Ideas abound from sources such as old wives tales, myths, stories, poetry, and the miscellaneous information passed along to Miss Lawrence from her correspondents, friends, and readers. Reading this text is like sitting at a wise woman's knee and listening to her tell about past times.
Will it rain on Saint Swithin's Day (July 15th) as it did in 971 A.D when his body was transferred from a forgotten grave to the Cathedral for a proper burial? Were the Chinese, who considered the frog the lord of waters onto something, "Send soon O frog the jewel of water."
But my favorite writing is the poetry she intersperses into the text -- "A bank where the wild thyme blows, Where Oxlips and the nodding Violet grows, Quite over canopied with lucious woodbine, with sweet musk-roses and with eglantine." Planted any eglantine lately..?
