A VETERAN CAMPUS MINISTER PROPOSES CATHOLICISM AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO FUNDAMENTALISM AND "LIBERALISM"
By Steven H Propp
At the time this book was published in 1985, Richard Chilson was director of the catechumenate program at Holy Spirit parish in Berkeley, California; he wrote other books such as Catholic Christianity: A Guide to the Way, the Truth, and the Life, Faith of Catholics: An Introduction (Deus Books), Yeshua of Nazareth: Spiritual Master: The Spirituality He Lived and Taught, etc.
He wrote in the Preface, "are the only alternatives a weak liberalized Christianity of an unthinking cleaving to the letter of Scripture? Catholicism provides another possibility... This book arises out of this campus situation but reaches far beyond the campus. Fundamentalists ask hard and difficult questions of Catholics. Yet those questions can be answered... This book is 'a' Catholic response to fundamental questions... The way I choose to describe Catholicism and critiques I may offer are not necessarily those of all Catholics." (Pg. 2-3)
He notes, "The Scriptures... are not a systematic presentation of the faith. Various books provide differing viewpoints. For example, it is not easy to reconcile the theology of Paul with Matthew or with Hebrews." (Pg. 20) He states, "most Christians accept the Trinity as a fundamental doctrine; some believe it is the central doctrine.Yet it is not found in Scripture. So if a Christian accepts the doctrine ... he or she must implicitly believe that the Church's wrestling with this problem and her solution to it is legitimate." (Pg. 25)
He points out, "Some Protestants have abandoned belief in scriptural inspiration. Against these liberals fundamentalists wage war. Catholics were not so quick to abandon the traditional ideas of inspiration and inerrancy in regard to Scripture, and the Catholic position today steers a middle course between the fundamentalists' rigidity and the liberals' surrender. Catholicism holds on to the inspiration of Scripture on the one hand while accepting the human authors of Scripture as products of their own time and culture, subject to human limitations." (Pg. 28) Later, he adds, "As modern Scripture scholarship makes clear, not every word in Jesus' mouth in the Gospels is an actual word he said." (Pg. 67) Later, he calls the prophet Daniel "a fictional character." (Pg. 123)
He argues that Eastern Orthodox and Protestant churches along with Catholicism "form official Christendom. But the Church does not stop there. There are sects who, while they do not profess the traditional Creed, still seek to follow Jesus. These are groups like the Mormons and the Jehovah's Witnesses. These are part of the Church." (Pg. 85)

A Clear Alternative
By Mike DePue, OFS
The Introduction to this book (pp. 5 -9) gives two distinct visions: catholic and fundamentalist. Note that "this book distinguishes between catholicism and Roman Catholicism." (p. 3) When "catholicism" is used generically (with a lower-case "c"), it includes all those individuals or faith expressions that consider themselves in some way a part of the catholic tradition.
The author's position: "Whereas fundamentalism is exclusive (clinging only to what is authentically and originally Christian), catholicism is inclusive (seeking to include the whole world in the illumination of Christ). Thus while catholicism is able to embrace the fundamentals, fundamentalism is not able to embrace catholicism."
Using a q&a format, the remainder of the book covers a number of controversial questions in a concise and understandable way. Following are a few of the fifty questions:
Can a Christian be a Marxist or Communist?
What is a sin?
Did Jesus die for our sins? (catholicism: Jesus, the expression of God's love, shows us that death is not ultimate.)
Do Christians have to believe in hell? (catholicism: yes--but we don't have to believe that anybody's there.)
Is the Church the Kingdom of God? (catholicism: "There may be Christians absent from the Kingdom.")
