In this original book, Ormond Rush makes a significant contribution to growing body of scholarship on Vatican II. He proposes that a comprehensive interpretation of Vatican II requires that the interpreter not only attempt a reconstruction of the "spirit" of the council emerging during the conciliar debates, but also take into account the various linguistic dimensions of the "letter" of the documents. Attention to genre, structure, rhetoric, intratextuality and intertextuality are all significant in reconstructing the "letter" of the council. In addition, he states that reconstruction of the "spirit" and "letter" must be supplemented by attention to another factor: the post-conciliar reception of the council from different contexts throughout the world over the last forty years. All three of these phases of interpretation must be kept in correlation. The book ends with a proposal for a reception pneumatology that calls for greater recognition of the work of reception as the work of the Holy Spirit of the council. About the Author
Ormond Rush is a priest of the diocese of Townsville, Australia, with a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome. He currently lectures at St Paul s Theological College, Australian Catholic University, Banyo Campus. His publications include "Still Interpreting Vatican II: Some Hermeneutical Principles" (New York: Paulist Press, 2004) and "The Eyes of Faith: The Sense of the Faithful and the Church s Reception of Revelation" (Washington, DC: The Catholic University of America Press, 2009).

Open your eyes to the Spirit

The Council is 45 years old but lives on in the Spirit.This short but erudite rendering of the council opens one's eyes to possibilities, rather than restraints, as is often misinterpreted by the heirarchy of today in the Church.

Excellent guidance in the discussion surrounding interpretation of Vatican II

I really enjoyed reading this book by Ormond Rush. He postulates the existence of 'micro-ruptures' with the past as we interpret the writings and 'spirit' of Vatican II. He successfully finds a middle ground between the extremes of those who feel that Vatican II represents a complete break with our Catholic history and theology and those who speak as if nothing of importance happened at Vatican II. It is an excellent resource for the coming "Year of Faith" celebrating Vatican Council II.

A Hermeneutics of Reception Worth Receiving

"Still Interpreting Vatican II: Some Hermeneutical Principles" provides a creative and faithful presentation of an hermenutical (i.e., understanding, interpretion & application) approach to Vatican II that highlights and quickens (i.e., brings to life) the concept of "reception" in a way that I found very helpful and encouraging.
This isn't easy reading, but then an authentic and integrated reception of scripture, tradition, sensus fidelium, comtemporary theological scholarship and the magisterium, isn't ever easy, but definitely worth serious "receptive" reflection and action.
