About the Author
Bruce Tallman is a full-time ecumenical spiritual director and has given workshops at international conferences for Spiritual Directors International and Men of Today, and facilitated retreats across North America. He is an adjunct faculty member of the Haden Institute for Spiritual Directors Training. He resides in London, Ontario, CAN.

Comments from an Archetypal Psychotheraist/Spiritual Director

I should have taken the title more literally as this book is written primarily for people practicing as Spiritual Directors in the Christian tradition. It is also quite patriarchial in tone in spite of the author's attempt to include the feminine principle. Most of the work is based on previous archetypal writings by authors of the men's movement. In spite of these disappointing aspects, the book had some points helpful to me in my work as a universal spiritual director/counselor and teacher of archtypes. I don't know that it would be very useful to the lay person as an introduction or source of information about the concept of archetypes in human consciousness that guide and inform our lives. I ordered the book thinking it might serve as a text for my clients and students but find it will not fill that need.

a bridge for today

Both the Qur'an and the New Testament say that the gate is narrow. So the Christian journey is arduous and needs guides at different stages. `Wildmen, Warriors and Kings, by Patrick Arnold, is quoted by the author as an example of the male journey and its archetypes, as is the less-profound Iron John by Robert Bly. Anyone who quotes `Primary Speech' by the Ulanovs is worth reading.
So the spiritual director who might be good for one person will not be so for another: in fact s/he may be downright harmful. The author describes the way the four foundational heroic archetypes: the Sovereign, Warrior, Seer and Lover and their eight anti-heroic counterparts--the Tyrant, Abdicator, Sadist, Masochist, Manipulator, Fool, Addict and Frigid--affect the way male and female spiritual directors and guides give spiritual guidance. His book also describes how heroic or anti-heroic seekers are formed. And it addresses how seekers can cope with an anti-heroic spiritual director and how all spiritual guides/directors and seekers can become more heroic by activating their healthy archetype
He also helps directees learn how to discern the good director from the not-so-good, and teaches both director and directee how to cope in less-than-ideal spiritual-direction situations.
The author is a marriage coach as well as a Spiritual Director and is a member of faculty at the Hayden Institute, Spiritual Direction & Dream Leader Training in the Jungian Mystical Christian Tradition.
Because it uses Jungian archetypes, it can be applicable to people of all faith traditions and none. Though it might be a bit too `new age' for some, people like John Drane are always urging us to engage with `Mind, Body & Spirit' fairs and tis book might help us to bridge the gap.
There's some good stuff on dreams.
I disliked the cheesy use of `God-incidences' for coincidences.

Archetypes well explained

I've read several books on archetypes,but this author clearly explains and lays out the basics. Wish I'd had this years ago! I am a spiritual director and this will help me in working with my directees in sharing these ideas and concepts with them.
