With this stunning collection of images of the Southern Appalachians, James Valentine presents an enduring portrait of the region's unique natural character. His compelling photographs of ancient mountains, old-growth forests, rare plants, and powerful waterways reveal the Appalachians' rich scenic beauty, while Chris Bolgiano's interpretive text and captions tell the story of its natural history.
Over four decades, Valentine has hiked hundreds of miles across mountainous parts of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia to photograph some of the last remnants of original forest. These scarce and scattered old-growth stands are the most biologically diverse temperate forests in the world. By sharing these remaining pristine wild places with us, Valentine and Bolgiano show that understanding these mountains and their extraordinary biodiversity is vital to maintaining the healthy environment that sustains all life.
Featuring an introduction by the late, longtime conservationist Robert Zahner and a foreword by William Meadows, president of The Wilderness Society, this visually entrancing and verbally engaging book celebrates the vibrant life of Southern Appalachian forests.

Review
No book of my experience has ever caught the natural beauty and richness of southern Appalachia with greater exactitude.--Edward O. Wilson, Harvard University, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner
This book is a paean to the Southern Appalachians, remarkable for its multi-hued depiction of a heartbreakingly beautiful and biologically rich part of our country, whose unique values are at risk from a host of human-caused pressures. . . . It took more than a decade and countless sojourns in the backcountry with a camera, from valley floor to mountaintop, to capture this collection of eloquent photographs. They open a new window on the Southern Appalachian region. . . . Chris Bolgiano's text is the book's grace note, both sparkling and spare.--William Meadows, from the foreword

Magnificent! The photos, the printing, the text....
By Bob Dickerman
First of all: these photographs of wild places are GLORIOUS. Nor are they shots that you or I might have approximated, even if extraordinarily lucky. These are the result of years of climbing, crawling and wandering in our southern mountains: finding just the right perspectives in just the right conditions. Whether the shots are close-ups of tiny but beautiful flora, or grand vistas of rugged ranges, or extraordinary shots from the bases of old growth giants...each warrants long contemplation. And the UNC Press' printing of them is magnificent.
But enhancing these photographs are Chris Bolgiano's elegant contemplations, in text and captions, on "Thinking Like a Mountain," "Thinking Like a Meadow/Bald," 'Thinking Like a Wildflower/Waterway/Forest/Sacred Place" and more. I learned so much from this book: including, finally, becoming able to identify trees and wildflowers which "guidebooks" had never illustrated so clearly.
The is THE book for those who love our Southern Appalachians...or wild places anywhere...and all of their magic.

The trees and forest
By wogan
This is a lovely coffee table book that takes us on a tour of the southern Appalachian Mountains. We learn of the original old growth forests. The photos are labeled with where the picture was taken, what it shows and something of interest about it. We witness autumn colours, morning mist, sunrise, sunset, some snow and then spring flowers. Even the explanation of the medicinal use of many of the common plants is given, both of present day, of the original settlers and the first Indian tribes.
There is interesting speculation concerning why there is a lack of trees on some of the mountain summits. I do wish that there would have been further information on the statement, "The forests Boone saw were much different than the forests today".
Specifics covered are: biodiversity, the mountains, the wildflowers, the forest, the waterways and the land as a sacred place.
This would be a wonderful addition for those who love nature, trees, forests and especially the Southern Appalachian mountain region. You could do no better in capturing the images and spirit of this wilderness area.

Remarkable photographs and a fascinating read
By N. Robertson
Photographer James Valentine, who has captured images of the natural wonders of the southeastern
United States for the past forty years, now focuses his attention on the original forests of the
Southern Appalachian Mountains. Readers perusing the photographs in this oversized book are
encouraged to think about the biodiversity of the region as well as its particular mountains,
meadows, balds, wildflowers, forests, waterways, and places that were considered sacred by the
peoples who once lived there. As the book's title suggests, these images feature each state in
which the Southern Appalachians stand, but some of the most remarkable photographs come
from the state parks and national forests of North Carolina. For example, the granite surface of
Stone Mountain in Roaring Gap shines like one enormous plate of glass as it rises above the trees
crowding the plain below. In an image that pours across two pages, the rippled shapes of bright
autumn leaves reflected in the surface of Fairfield Lake in the Sapphire Valley mimic the short
brush strokes found in Impressionist paintings.
Chris Bolgiano's accompanying text is sparse--the longest passages are no more than a page
each--but it provides fascinating details about the locations highlighted by Valentine's
photographs. Early on, readers find that a surveyor's error made before the Civil War allowed
fifty acres of virgin red spruce trees to escape the logging that devastated many other high
elevation mountain ridges in West Virginia. In the preface to the chapter "Thinking like a
Forest," readers learn that the largest remnant of original forest in eastern North America lies
within 100,000 acres of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, which straddles the border
between Tennessee and North Carolina. Closer to the book's end, readers discover that hundreds
of Cherokees escaped the Trail of Tears by hiding on Clingman's Dome in what is now the same
national park. Photographers will also enjoy reading through Valentine's acknowledgements, as
he describes the vintage cameras, lenses, and other equipment used to produce the images of
such flowers as the Carolina lily, Oconee bell, yellow lady slipper, and flame azalea in the
chapter "Thinking like a Wildflower."
The broad appeal of nature photography makes Southern Appalachian Celebration an excellent
choice for just about anyone.
