This remains an important work. Any liturgical bookshelf that is bare of the first edition should exhort its owner to secure a copy of the second. The book deserves consideration by church leaders engaged in the current liturgy debates, liturgical teachers and historians who are more often than not focused on the medieval period, and readers in general seeking insight into our immediate history and current mindset.

About the Author
James F. White, Ph.D., is the Bard Thompson Professor of Liturgical Studies at Drew University and a visiting professor at Yale University. He has published nineteen books, chapters in forty-six other books, and over a hundred articles. His first edition of Roman Catholic Worship won the 1996 First Place Book Award from The Catholic Press Association.
Nathan D. Mitchell, PhD, is Associate Director for Research at the Center for Pastoral Liturgy, University of Notre Dame. Six times a year, he writes "The Amen Corner" for Worship. In 1998, the North American Academy of Liturgy presented him with its Berakah Award. Other books by Mitchell that have been published by The Liturgical Press include Cult and Controversy, Mission and Ministry, and Rule of Prayer, Rule of Faith. He also contributed to The Collegeville Pastoral Dictionary of Biblical Theology.

A Helpful Survey of Developments in the Roman Rite

This is an interesting introduction to the persistent liturgical developments, almost always consonant with social and cultural changes, within the Roman Rite over the past four centuries. Dr. White does not focus on the minutiae of official modifications to the texts themselves. Rather, he surveys the differences that have obtained in the public celebration of the approved liturgies, with special attention to developments in church music and architecture. This helps the reader keep the accelerated and, for some, troubling developments of the Roman Rite during the past four decades in some sort of historical perspective. A useful book, although, while lauding the recent developments in the Roman liturgy, Dr. White helps himself to some petulant and prejudicial accusations against the leadership of the Catholic Church (the bit about the Vatican's "war against women" comes to mind). Particularly in the later chapters, this book is very much influenced by the ideological commitments of the author, which reflect the hope that the Catholic Faith can be transformed, along the lines of Dr. White's mainline Protestant faith, into a species of modernism--ideologically democratic, relativistic, and egalitarian.

Very good review of Catholic liturgical history across over 400 years

Excellent summary of 445 years of liturgical development: from the "Mass as theater" following the Council of Trent (1570) to the "Mass as communal memorial meal w/ maximum audience participation" after Vatican II and the 1970 mass of Paul VI. A fun, quick read, loaded with facts. BTW, it also covers other forms of worship: devotions like the rosary, church music, the Divine Office, etc.
