Do not let this person into your child's life.
By Amazon Customer
“Call me Mr. Berg. When you graduate high school, you can call me Mr. Egeberg. When you’re 21, you can call me Gary.” –Gary Egeberg, 1996
Gary was my middle school religion teacher and the most abusive figure of my childhood. While many former students look back on “Mr. Berg” fondly, I am haunted with memories of being publically taunted, singled out, and bullied by a popular teacher. I am still suffering from the immense shame thrust upon me during my tender adolescence, that I carry with me into my 30s.
Please do not buy this book for a young person. Do not put Gary in a position of power over children in any capacity. Here are a few examples of why not.
The punishment for forgetting anything on his classroom materials list (red pen, black pen, blue pen, pencil, notebook, binder, loose leaf, folder, Bible) was to write this ten times:
If you bring your stuff you have your stuff,
if you have your stuff, you use your stuff,
if you use your stuff, you learn your stuff,
if you learn your stuff, you know your stuff,
if you know your stuff, you are smart stuff.
I had to write this a lot - I am not an organized person. I missed many recesses to sit in a room and write about my personal deficiency: If I can’t even remember my stuff, I am not smart. Once I tried to finish more quickly by writing one word at a time on each line (If, If, If, If, If, If, If, If, If, If, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, have, have have, have, have, have, have, have, have, have…). Gary waited until I was at the word “smart” - 44 words into the sentence, and 440 words into my sentence – to ask me if that is how sentences are supposed to be written. (It’s not). Also, if l-u-r-n is the how you spell learn. (It’s not) Crumble paper. Toss into can. Give new, empty paper. “Do it right.”
Things Gary knew when he said, “Do it right:” This is a special education student. This student is a slow and labored writer. This student hasn’t had recess for 3 days. This student still won’t know how to spell “learn.”
One punishment for forgetting your Bible was that you had to sit in the hallway and copy scriptures out of a borrowed Bible. Gary once said to me, “You’re going to be out here so long, you’ll hate the scriptures by the time you’re done.” This was my religion teacher. He was right. I brought the wrong Bible once. The punishment was public questioning. How could I think that was okay? Why were we always losing class time because of my ineptitude? Didn’t I see how unfair it was of me to be so ridiculous that my classmates had to lose learning time to focus on my ridicule instead of Jesus?
I was a fat girl in middle school - you can imagine or remember what that was like. While standing in line for lunch, Gary approached me, pointed to my gut and with disgust told me to tuck in my shirt. I told him that my shirt was too short (my body was too big) and I couldn’t tuck it in. He scoffed and said, “then get some clothes that fit you.” Understand this in the context of – I was the fattest girl in that line, I had the poorest family of anyone in that class, I was painfully shy, I didn’t have friends, I was not the only one with an untucked shirt, everyone heard.
Punishment for untucked shirt:
“If you dress sharp you look sharp,
if you look sharp, your act sharp,
if you act sharp, you are sharp stuff”
Translation: “If you don’t look good, you aren’t good.” At least it was shorter.
Periodically students were asked to bring in bags of bite-size candy. Gary would keep them in a bag on top of his filing cabinet behind his desk. Once in awhile, he would give each student in class a piece of candy. Except a couple students who would get handfuls, and a couple students who wouldn’t get any– for no reason given either way. Imagine where I fell.
Gary posted a quote of the day on the board. I was writing a quote for him during class that I had heard, “Religion is bread for everyday, not cake for special occasions.” He looked at it. Rolled eyes. Threw it away.
Gary was a very popular teacher.
Gary asked me what was wrong with me.

A great resource for teens and parents (or anyone).
By A Customer
This is a great resource book for teenagers, parents and teachers dealing with feelings.
The author gives practical tips on how to cope with such feelings as anger, jealousy and guilt.
I enjoyed the illustrations and the journal questions.
A friend of mine from work said she and her 13 year old daughter were working through the book together to better understand each other.
Kids need good information and tools to deal with the pressures of today. This book helps everyone realize life can be overwhelming but we can make healthy choices in dealing with our emotions.
I wish I had this book when I was a teenager!!!

This is a religiously based book
By MNLaurie
This is a fine book, but is definitely from a religious point of view. It was included in a group of what I would call 'non-religious' similar books, so I ordered it. I cannot use this book in the setting where I work. I would have appreciated a note somewhere that God and God's love is an important part of this particular book.
